I'd like to take my DGM on a weekend away. She thinks it's a lovely idea but has no ideas so thought I would ask here:

  • max 3hr drive from Cardiff OR max 3hr flight from Cardiff
  • arts, culture & history are very important to her
  • not many hills and/or excellent public transport
  • clear food options as she has gluten intolerance & a couple of allergies

Thank you!

Berlin ( not sure if you can get there from Cardiff )
Could you fly from Bristol or Birmingham?

Belfast is great for a city break and will fall under UK rules for food allergen labelling.

@Fantapops
Not sure about flights from Cardiff but Edinburgh is great. Get taxis to avoid hills. You can get there from Bristol airport.

Manchester has art, museums, culture and history. London obviously!

Further afield: Barcelona, Madrid, Copenhagen, Dublin, Stockholm, Berlin, Amsterdam, Vienna, Bruges snd Brussels all have what you want and are not too far.

I ruled out Edinburgh on the basis of the hills! The buses are excellent but even the pavements are bad or cobbled and can be difficult if you have mobility problems.

@emmathedilemma We didn’t find that. We got taxis and pavements were fine. Busy at times but isn’t everywhere? We are not into yomping everywhere so planned where we stayed and restaurants nearby. Manchester is flatter though!

@TizerorFizz trust me, i live here and can't afford taxis everywhere, the roads and pavements are a disgrace! My dad walks with a stick and is bad on his feet and he struggles here.

Bath ?

There's flights from Cardiff to Palma Mallorca. Palma is a great smaller city for a mini break. You should get some balmy sun and it's got plenty of culture including a wonderful cathedral. It's just a great place to potter.

Food wise, it's easy to find simple tapas so you can manage allergies.

There's a wonderful old train that you can get over the island to the lovely town of Soller that's a great day trip.

Have fun wherever you go.

I took my elderly mother to mechlen, just outside Brussels. Small and very walkable centre. Easy for day trip to brugge, ghent or Brussels.

Liverpool? It's a lovely drive from Cardiff straight up the a49 then through the Mersey tunnel. We stopped at Hereford cathedral for lunch on the way, took about 3.5 hours (we are 45 mins from Cardiff so not quite the same route)

gogohmm · 06/04/2023 07:42

Another thought was Budapest, can fly from Bristol, good public transport including a train up the big hill, gluten free food was widely available

Xiaoxiong · 06/04/2023 08:02

@helpfulperson I was just about to suggest Brussels! So much to do and see and excellent tram system.

If you broke it with lunch or an evening in London you could do 2 hours on the train Cardiff-London, and then 1 hour 40 mins on the train London-Brussels. That would skip all the faff of airports and getting in and out and security lines etc.

@emmathedilemma
People on holiday have a different view to locals and what they can afford. You tend to spend more when on holiday because you are not doing it every day! So a few taxis make no odds.
