Hello, can anyone offer any travel advice on Austria? Interested in the scenic parts like Innsbruck/ Hallstatt but flights into Salzburg are much cheaper / more frequent! Is it better to travel from Salzburg airport to one of these areas and stay there for the duration or easy to stay in Salzburg and do day trips to these sorts of areas ? Thanks in advance!

I'm flying into Innsbruck and out of Munich this summer and though I haven't booked anywhere yet as am still planning itinerary, neither Innsbruck and Salzburg are cheap for hotels, but Innsbruck is cheaper than Salzburg by and large.
I'm thinking of just 2 nights in Innsbruck then going to somewhere like Seefeld and going to Salzburg for one very long day tbh.

We ski in Seefeld, it's lovely! We always find it much cheaper to fly easyJet to Munich though.

Can I hijack and ask is there enough to do in and around Seefeld in summer for 4-5 days? (sorry OP!)

Salzburg is stunning. Get the Salzburg card and it covers all the sights and public transport. Perhaps look at staying near Lake Wolfgang or one of the other lakes. They’re not too far away if you want a few days in the city and then a break in the hills.

Equally, if you stay in one of the villages near Innsbruck, the public transport system is excellent and you’ll be able to see the city and the hills. Agree with PP that to see Innsbruck, fly into Munich and drive.

The trains in Austria are very reliable if you want to combine both cities.

Seefeld has a great pool with slides -you could easily spend half a day there. Then there's a summer toboggan run which we all loved. It's not far from Innsbruck which is great too. Another great pool in the centre. The ski jump there is worth a visit, last time we were there in summer the Croatian ski team were practicing - was amazing to watch!

Salzburg is beautiful and worth a couple of nights, as is Hallstatt; in my opinion, both more so than Innsbruck. The Austrian trains are good, though when we went a few years ago the connection between Salzburg and Hallstatt was slow enough that you wouldn't want to do one from the other as a day trip. You can check out train times in advance on the ÖBB website: www.oebb.at/en/

Austria has plenty of "scenic parts" close to Salzburg! The city itself is beautiful, and within an hour or so there are places such as Lofer, Zell am See, Saalbach, Wolfgansee.

Public transport is inexpensive, reliable and efficient. If you have never been to Austria and want a combined city/mountains/lakes trip, then the Salzburg area is just as good as Innsbruck. Spend a couple of days in the Salzburg, then a few days in somewhere like Saalbach.

It's only an hour and a half from Munich to Innsbruck, or I think an hour from Salzburg and both rides are very scenic. That will open up your flight options a lot

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 05/04/2023 17:35

I'm near Salzburg now and it's stunning. Warm enough to have a coffee outside but still snow and sking.

I've flown into Munich then driven to Salzburg area, flights were cheaper and also much cheaper car hire. I loved Hinterglemm next to Saalbach, also visited Berchtesgaden just over the border which was a lovely place, beautiful lake and mountains.

Hi , sorry to start this thread up again but wondered about transport from salzburg airport to halstatt area … it seems like transfers dont exist and only option is public transport which is a bit of a trek or a private car which is hundreds of euros?! Can anyone advise? TIA x

@Pixie18

As you've already discovered, unless you want to pay €€€ for a car (or taxi) the only option is using public transport. From the Airport you need to get to the centre of Salzburg, and you can do this using the trolleybus that leaves from outside the terminal building every 10 minutes.

From Salzburg to Hallstatt you can either take the bus or the train. Both will involve a change, and both take a bit over 2 1/2 hours. Use the OEBB.at website for detailed options. Even a transfer or car is going to take 2 hours so public transport is not really much slower and as it is inexpensive, clean and very reliable, you can sit back and enjoy the views while someone else does the driving.
