Hiya - I’m taking my 9 year old to Dublin for 3 days next week…what are the best things we can see/do?? Thanks.

Zoo, Viking Splash tour, Epic museum, Jeanie Johnston Famine ship, Dublinia, Natural History museum ("Dead Zoo") although I think only part of it might be open due to renovation, Trinity College's Long Room. Could get Dart (train that runs along Dublin coast) to beaches (e.g.Malahide - castle to visit too), 14 Henrietta St. Probably too young for Kilmainham Gaol (great place to visit though)

Leprechaun museum, Aquazone at the national aquatic centre, Tayto park.

If you have a car or book a trip with bus included, you can go to Glendalough which is not in Dublin but the county next door.

A day trip on the train to Kilkenny is doable it's a lovely little town.
And as the poster above suggested, a trip on the Dart either north or southbound, loads of gorgeous places to stop off.

Thank you for the great recommendations - lots of stuff to do 😊

Honestly, Kilmainham Gaol was the highlight of my ds's trip there. And mine to be fair! He was a little older - 13 - so it might be different for your ds but still a very interesting experience. Not for the delicate soul though, I suppose, as lots of detail if what happened to the inmates there. It gave me a much more nuanced and sensible view of 'the troubles' though, having been brought up in England and subject to our propaganda.

SarBear1980 · 02/04/2023 11:25

I’ve left it too late for Gaol tickets - I’m a bit annoyed I didn’t book that earlier as it’s now sold out and he’d absolutely love that!!

And the Leprechaun Museum is closed for refurbishment…we’d have loved that one too!!

I have no idea if it's still there but my ds and I also had a real laugh going round the waxworks which were hilarious and sometimes actively bad. Also Dublin Zoo is really lovely if that's your thing.

EPIC is great! An interactive experience.

BasiliskStare · 04/04/2023 21:35

I would definitely try the Jeanie Johnson ship - Doesn't take too long but well worth it

SarBear1980 · 05/04/2023 06:34

Thanks for all the suggestions. I’ve booked Dublinia as he’s been doing Vikings at school, the Viking Splash and the wax works 😊. Also got EPIC and the ship in the plan!

Tour of croke park stadium - it’s a bit of history as well as just the game

LookItsMeAgain · 05/04/2023 08:34

If you're planning on using public transport get yourself a Leap card. It can be used on buses, the Dart and the Luas (tram) in Dublin. It can be topped up on your phone once you download the app.

You could do the Skyline tour in Croke Park - Discover Dublin from 17 storeys high - Croke Park

Tayto Park has been recently renamed Emerald Park (but it'll still be Tayto Park for so many people) - Emerald Park | Ireland's Only Theme Park and Zoo | Previously Tayto Park

You could do the "Talking Statues" tour - it's a walking tour around Dublin:
Talking Statues Dublin

Go to the Botanic Gardens and as you walk through you can get access to Glasnevin Cemetery where 1m+ Dubliners are buried. There is a very famous pub that has the nickname "The Grave Diggers" which might be nice for refreshments and in the cemetery you can do a tour of the place. There is a documentary called "One Million Dubliners" which might be available on line to give you an idea of what to expect.

If you're looking for something for the 9yr old you could plan to go to Jump Zone - Jump Zone | Sandyford | Things To Do In Dublin Dublin Ireland | Your Days Out

There is also Explorium - Explorium | National Sport & Science Centre | Things To Do In Dublin Dublin Ireland | Your Days Out

If you're looking for a swim - the National Aquatic Centre might be good - Sport Ireland National Sports Campus | Things To Do In Dublin Ireland | Your Days Out

Discover Dublin from 17 storeys high

The Skyline Tour is a top Dublin tourist attraction and offers exhilarating views across Dublin from the roof of Croke Park stadium
