Swimming hats in Italy?

I've been looking at campsites in Spain and Italy and saw that in Italy swimming caps have to be worn in most public pools. When I've been to Italy before This wasn't the case so I don't know if it's something new that's been bought in or if it's only at certain places. Does anyone know what the deal is?

IME it's often a rule but I've never seen it enforced.

Lightningrain · 28/03/2023 07:53

Yes, it seems to be a fairly new rule that has to be enforced by the staff at campsites and hotels.

We’ve been to Italy loads of times and it was the first time last summer that nobody was allowed in the pool without one.

So1invictus · 29/03/2023 06:51

It's not new. I've been here since 1994 and have always experienced this. They might be enforcing it more now, but it's always been a general rule. They might not insist children with short hair do it, but long hair and adults, generally yes.

For hygiene reasons been the rule in public pools in Italy for many years, but since Covid they've really tightened up on it. They don't have to be those really tight ones though, the slightly looser material ones are also ok.

We were at a campsite last year in Italy - south of Pisa and no hats were worn in the pool.

This year we are going to camp near Venice and some camps have the rule and some don't.

stayathomer · 29/03/2023 16:21

Yes, you’re not allowed in the pool othwise(we’ve been to two different places and both said it). They’ll sell them in reception though. Personally I think it’s a good idea!

QuitMoaning · 29/03/2023 16:54

It has been enforced at water parks for at least 20 years and is absolutely strictly enforced.
Only been to a few hotels with swimming pools, and not since about 2017, and they didn’t enforce them then but water parks definitely

SpaghettiSquash · 29/03/2023 17:08

I didn't know this and we are going to Italy in May. Thanks for posting OP. Can I ask if Italy is also like France and requires trunks to be worn rather than swim shorts?

Except Caribe Bay water park near Venice where absolutely no one wears them.

Swim shorts are fine, Italy doesn’t have any rules about swim suit style

SpaghettiSquash · 29/03/2023 20:00

@Mixkle That's good to know, thank you.

We were at Lake Garda Euro camp in 2017 and swimming caps were required and very much enforced. I quite liked it as I loathe all that floating hair in the water…

We just had soft caps that don’t keep your hair dry but are easy to pull on/off.

During the same hols, we also stayed in a hotel with a pool area and caps were not required there.

Congratulations - you've made it to today's Daily Mail

British holidaymakers heading to Italy need to be aware of one rule

According to the travel experts at Suncamp, it is a universal rule across the country - but some campsites have sought an exemption.

It was strictly enforced on the holiday park at lake Garda we stayed at last year. The campsite shop sold the hats for a euro each. They weren’t the tight rubber ones kids wear for lessons. Soft material that doesn’t keep your hair dry but keeps hair out of the pool. The pools were immaculate so I think it was worth it. Everyone wears them so no big deal.

wlana · 07/08/2023 09:02

I don’t know what the deal is, but a family member has just got back from there and this is indeed the deal.

Hoppinggreen · 07/08/2023 09:03

We were in The Italian Lakes a few weeks ago.
We swam in the lake and had our own pool but we frequently walked past a public pool in the town and everyone was wearing hats

Kittyhasababy · 07/08/2023 19:59

Yes. You normally need caps but they generally have cheap fabric ones for sale. We have hundreds of them as my kids always got them as gifts when they enrolled on swimming courses.
