Kids snack ideas for holiday

What snacks do you pack for your kids when travelling on holiday?

Travelling long haul with two kids who are constantly hungry! Don't want anything too messy or fresh like cut up fruit. I will pack in my hand luggage and so shouldn't be too bulky.

Gogo squeeze pouches (both fruit and yogurt), Bear Yo-yos etc, little bags of biscuits (such as party rings), boxes of raisins, crackers or breadsticks.

Thanks for the suggestions @Littlehouseinthebigcity. Kids are past the toddler stage but they'd be interested in some of this for sure. Funny but I saw some party rings in the supermarket earlier and was tempted. I'll probably end up packing some small packs of crisps. Raisins are good.

Any sort of crisps or crackers. Go a head bars, nurti grain bars, party rings as said before. Fruit winders, plain biscuits (rich tea, digestives or even jammie dodgers which do come in miniature form now) Chocolate might melt. Snacker jacks

We did mini muffins, snack bag portions of biscuits, oreos, cereal bars and a bag with Celebration chocolate, they normally stay fairly firm and it's not that hot in the plane.

At the airport we got some fruit snack pots and yoghurt at a Boots. We have a small foldable cool bag, that worked for 2-3 hours.

When they served the meal DH and I gave DD also our bread rolls and butter as they run out of childrens meal and the adult wasn't the best choice for her.

I personally would avoid raisins, they stuck everywhere when dropped and the last thing you want is having some on your seat.

I usually do whatever is dairy free and comes in mini packs so I can hand them out as the flight goes on.

Once airside head for a Boots meal deal - everyone gets to choose their own sandwich/salad, crisps/snack/choc, and a drink/smoothie.

More filling than random tiny snacks.

Soreen or cake bars

If you don't want them having soft drinks but they are funny about water, you can get small pouches of extremely concentrated squash under 100ml.

The gogosqueez pouches are good for any age, if the kids are willing - they're designed for older kids than baby/toddler pouches and if your kids like yogurt they're great cos they are long life - my 6 year old loves them! Obviously don't know what age yours are but just a thought :) I bulk buy them off Amazon 😂

Oh great, thank you everyone. We will get a meal on the plane so won't need to buy from Boots.
I hadn't seen those gogo squeeze pouches before. They look good but I can see my two finishing them too fast!

DH tends to buy brioche buns so we have those, and will add biscuits and crisps. Not terribly healthy, I know. I might look out for a protein snack that will keep. What are fruit winders? Are they those dry fruit strips that come with the animal card? That's a good shout.

You probably can't take the gogosqueez on a plane?

reluctantbrit · 29/03/2023 20:05

Have you checked that your children's meals are booked? Our booking was somehow lost and DD definitely wasn't happy.

Squeezy pouches count as liquid, we were once behind a couple in the security lane who had to open and taste several baby food pouches they had in their handluggage.

I know you said no fruit but I do bring cut up carrot sticks in a tupperware and grapes. They aren’t messy and everyone is desperate for something fresh on a plane. Otherwise, I tend to aim for stuff that won’t make a mess, so eg cereal bars but the chewy ones not the crunchy ones. Mini cheddars or hula hoops - but they do make you thirsty. Nuts, but these aren’t for the plane (as others may have allergies) more for the journey the other end. They only get eaten if everyone is really hungry!

Littlehouseinthebigcity · 30/03/2023 06:42

The gogo squeez pouches (and other brands to be fair 🤣) are less than 100ml/g which I thought meant they were allowed - it's a while since I've been on a plane though so apologies if I'm wrong!!

ShillingSixpence · 30/03/2023 06:59

I know you have a meal booked on the plane, but definitely take some additional filling snacks that you know they like in case the kids aren't keen on the plane food. Two of mine were deeply suspicious of the plane options and needed supplementing with stuff we'd brought with us. As other PP have said, muesli bars and fruit straps are good. A mini tub of peanut butter to put on crackers. Rice cakes, sesame snaps, granola, freeze dried strawberries. A tub of grapes or similar.

Also factor in whether you might be waiting in massive lines at immigration with tired and cranky kids (choc buttons or similar are good for this ime).

Finally- will there be a big time difference? Mine woke up at 2.30am local time really hungry last time we travelled long haul, luckily we'd been to the little shop near our accommodation the night before when we arrived so we could give them something. So maybe consider whether you need to factor that in too. It can be a very long and unhappy wait for breakfast otherwise.
