Hiya,
I’m heading to Hamburg with my 19 yr old son at the end of May for one week.
we’ll be staying one night in Luneburg as I have a work meeting - I’ve not really been to Germany much other than work trips so any suggestions of places we can visit and any adventure activities we could do?

Hamburg has the biggest model railway in the world at Minatur Wunderland. I’ve not been but it looks worth a visit even for non-train fanatics. There also seems to be a streetcar tour - looks like gokarts !! Also plenty of options for boat and culture tours. Heide Park Resort isn’t that far if roller coasters are your thing.

These are great ideas! Thank you, I’d googled but none of these came up :)

I went on a train to lübeck which is not too far and is a really interesting old town. Not sure whether a 19 year old would agree though 😁

Miniatur Wunderland is great - I'd definitely recommend booking in advance, however, as it gets really busy.

I always tell Brits to go and see the Beatles stuff on the Reeperbahn when in Hamburg, but maybe not for a 19 year old! 😂The Speicherstadt is cool for a walk around, and definitely have a look at the Elbphilharmonie concert hall. If you walk through the Elbtunnel from the city, you can get Instagram-worthy shots of it.

The Schanzenviertel is a cool part of the city for younger people. Lots of students hang out there and there are independent shops, restaurants and bars - all very quirky.

Leftfield suggestion . . . even if you're not a fan of seafood, the fish market is quite an experience to witness. There's a good atmosphere, always packed full of people and very traditional for Hamburg.

Oh and the boat tours run at night, too, so if your days are quite busy, then that's maybe a good option for you. The city looks very beautiful lit up.

Have fun and any questions, I'd be happy to help. (I'll stop now before I get too homesick 😭)

Cheekily jumping on this thread but we have one night in Hamburg in a couple of weeks with our Miniatur Wunderland- obsessed 12 and 13 year old DCs. Looking for a great place for dinner - the kids would really like somewhere with schnitzel/sausages/pretzels but we don't want somewhere that is just a tourist trap. We are staying centrally at the Renaissance Hotel. A friend suggested Parlament but they are shut on a Wednesday night. Any good recommendations?

Sure @LondonMummer ! Although for this, I'm afraid I'm firstly taking you back to the Beatles again . . . haha. Right around the corner to the Beatles statue, you'll find the Astra Brewery. Super cool place and good food.

A little closer to Miniatur Wunderland is Heimathaften - also right next to the Elbphilharmonie. That's a cool place and I think they do traditional dishes - I'm vegan, so maybe not the best person to ask, but DH loves Schnitzel, Currywurst and co and gave that place a good review when we visited last year. 😂

More traditional . . . Well, I mentioned the Schanzenviertel in my first post - there is a local institution there called Erikas Eck. They do traditional food and it is well off the tourist trail, although Hamburg is pretty international, so you'll receive a nice welcome anywhere you go. Easy to reach, too. Just hop on either the train or U-Bahn to Sternstrasse and it's a 5 minute walk. Also up there is the traditional brewery Altes Maedchen, which is nice and relaxed for food and drinks.

I hope that gives you some ideas and hope you have a fantastic time in Hamburg. ❤ (Now I'm really hungry! 😂)

Thank you so much. That's super kind of you!

These are brilliant suggestions thanks so much!!

I once accidentally crossed the Elbtunnel in a little 2 seater convertible - Sat Nav took us that way and so we went for it having no idea what it entailed so I’ll def have to take my boy there.

These suggestions have really put my mind at ease that I can find plenty of things to do that he’ll enjoy so thank you again :)

I literally opened this thread to say Miniatur Wonderland! It's great 😁

Central Hamburg is nice to wander around. The nightlife is excellent.
