Looking for ideas for somewhere to go Jan/Feb for some winter sun! We have a DD who is 3 mid Feb and would ideally like somewhere with kiddy clubs so she is catered for and happy and I can finally read a book!!

We're looking for mid region price range but think I can persuade DH on this!!!

Any ideas will be vvvvv gratefully received! We so need a holiday - our main one this year was Italy with the inlaws - need I say more?? I need your ideas quickly!!!!

Thanks in advance xxxx

Sunsail in Antigua - yum yum

SilverLining · 07/12/2004 19:59

Yep - count me in! Slightly concerned about flight time with DD though - she is not the best traveller ..... 4 hours on the M6 this christmas will no doubt be bad enough!!!

Thanks though! SL xx

Ive decided on Dubai myself (thanks to MNers!)
We went to Sri Lanka a couple of years ago. It was fabulous and really really nice places were pretty reasonably priced. Let me know if you want more info.

Tinker · 07/12/2004 20:03

Canaries? Dubai? Tunisia? Guess you can't avoid travelling to get sun in Feb

moondog · 07/12/2004 20:03

Morocco is ace too, but a bit cold at this time of the year perhaps?

SilverLining · 07/12/2004 21:43

Thanks everyone - Moondog, very interested in Sri Lanka - would it be warm in Jan/Feb? Do they have childrens clubs there?

Tinker - good point about travelling to get the sun, pretty inevitable at that time of year. I guess we might just have to bite the bullet and risk the flight! Whats the worse that can happen??! Actually lets not answer that!!

we had been recommended Egypt but know nothing about that either. SIL went to Dubai and raved about that so could look into that too!

Thanks again - SL xx

Arrived in SL on Christmas Day and spent 4 weeks just travelling around.
I did what I always do-bought a Lonely Planet months in advance, read it cover to cover and organised a rough itinerary. Got hold of the itineraries of various nice guided tours to compare and contrast and make sure we weren't missing anything important (cos lets face it, 'traveller' or tourist, we all want to see the same things!)

We booked the first three nights over the Internet choosing a hotel in Unawatuna (lovely unspoilt beach in the south) and they sent a minibus to Columbo to pick us up from the airport (cost about £30 despite being about a 4 hour drive)

After that, we just moved on every few days-did a safari park, the Highlands (Nurawya Elya-very colonial!), the north with its cultural parts and Kandy (elephant orphanage, Botanical gardens and elephant orphanage)and of course, lounging on the beach in the south.

We stayed in a variety of places-really posh ones sometimes and little guest houses at other times. Didn't stay in 'kids club' type places, although there are loads of those, but often paid a member of staff to look after dd for an hour or so in the evening so we could have a bit of peace eating dinner.

It is so easy to travel around SL. Each hotel would arrange a car/tuk tuk to take us on to the next place. A lot of people hire a car and a driver for their whole trip.
SL has everything-beaches,culture,shopping, great food, lovely people, lack of hassle, reasonable prices.

One of our best holidays yet!

moondog · 07/12/2004 21:56

Yes, tropical so always lovely and warm!

snowmeltsonthebeach · 07/12/2004 22:10

how old were your kids moondog when you went to SL??

moondog · 07/12/2004 22:12

25 months (just had the one then-thought that was hard work! Little did I know:)

We took one backpack and a stroller-really helped to keep us mobile. People at the check in desk couldn't believe it!

moondog · 07/12/2004 22:16

Lots of big hotels with kids clubs between Unawatuna and Columbo but IMO they would not let you experience the best of SL (but I know what you mean about wanting some peace to read!)
We had to go to bed at about 9 on New Year's Eve as dd was being a little sod!
Lay there in bed fuming as the rest of the hotel caroused on the beach. Grrrrr!!

bonymerryxmas · 08/12/2004 16:56

Recommend Dubai - only 7hrs flight time, lovely hotels with great kids clubs, fab beaches and GREAT weather!

artyjoe · 08/12/2004 17:53

What about Tunisia?

Fantastic weather and only 2.5hrs flight time...nearly all hotels are half board, but very complex based...probably fab for children and chilling out by the pool!

SilverLining · 08/12/2004 18:05

Thanks everyone once again - definitely narrowing it down and geting some great ideas!! What will the weather be like in Tunisia in Jan/Feb? I'm craving sunshine!!!

Off to look at some holiday websites now - makes a change from mumsnet!!

Thanks again xxx
