Huge part of the coast, you need to be more specific.

daisygirl999 · 26/03/2023 09:14

Maybe torremolinos or benaldema

I stayed in the Hotel Mac Benalmadema. We had 2 rooms next to the pool with a terrace and sunbed. Beach across the road. Just did B&B and ate out. It was a nice hotel for me, DH and DS(21 at the time).
It's not far from airport so we got a taxi.

tanstaafl · 27/03/2023 20:43

You going package or making your own trip @daisygirl999 ?
Yourself , couple , family?

daisygirl999 · 27/03/2023 20:55

Going to do it myself as cheaper. Me the husband and 2 teens age 17 and 14. Never been to that area so clueless in terms of accommodation would like something central

Benalmadena Beach hotel. It's nice.

BloomingHyacinths · 27/03/2023 21:21

I'd check packages with jet2 to compare. I usually find it's more expensive to book separately.

It depends what your style is, the resorts IMO get progressively more upmarket the further west from Malaga airport they are. Puerto Banus has swanky yachts in the marina and a load of high end designer shops. Also a lot of restaurants. It all depends what you want to do whilst on holiday. Lots of rentals on airb&b all along the coast. Plenty of supermarkets inc Aldi and Lidl to choose from. Im here now for a few days staying in a hotel and it's lovely!

I like Benalmadena too. I stayed at Benalmadena beach at half term and loved it. You can get the train from the airport and it goes to a lot of the resorts on that part of the coast and Malaga city and the new Mall.Benalmadena is my favourite for some reason. Its a short taxi from the station and you can walk along the beach to the marina. I also love how close it is to the airport all the more glamorous or pretty resorts are further away but Benalmadena works for me still.

I was there last week. Didn't know you could get a train, we got a taxi which was a rip off but got an Uber on the way back which was much less. There is a beach bar on the promenade called the dizzy donkey (not the best name) which did the most amazing cocktails and tapas.

iminvestednow · 27/03/2023 22:30

Get an apartment in alcazaba beach Estepona, just outside of Marbella. Really nice place to stay.

mrsnec · 27/03/2023 22:38

The station is called Arroyo de la miel. It's about 25 minutes walk uphill from Benalmadena beach or 6e in a taxi. I think the train is 3 euros. We paid about 25 euros for a taxi back to the airport because of an early flight but used trains all the time when we were there. The line from the airport goes to Malaga city in one direction and Fuengirola in the other.

I've stayed in the Flatotel, Torrequebrada, Las Areanas and Benalmadena beach. I like to be as close to the marina as possible but some people really rate a self catering complex called sunset something or other. We don't do packages. We flew with Vueling because of the convenient flight times.

And yes I think I went to that bar!

The Dizzy Donkey featured on several episodes of A New Life In The Sun as has The Lemon Tree bar up in Midas Pueblo.

If you’re arranging it yourself then you should now be aware as pp have mentioned there’s a modern train line runs from the airport up to Malaga City ( and a bit beyond? ) and all the way down the coast to Fuengirola.

Please consider hiring a car and visiting Seville, Granada, Ronda and Caminito del Rey ( need a head for heights. ).

Gibraltar is a short drive , advice is usually to park in La Linea and cross the border on foot into Gibraltar.

We love that part of Spain and visit every year.

mrsnec · 28/03/2023 18:14

We did that too. everyone was talking about the lemon tree. Loved Mijas.Buses were reasonable and comfortable. We took the bus from Benalmadena to Mijas. The stop is directly outside the Benalmadena beach and then we took the bus back as far as Fuengirola then train back. There's special offers on the trains where you get free journeys after a certain amount but we didn't quite make it.

We went all the way to Malaga too. Do the Picasso museum but book in advance. Also this was my first time back in years and my first time taking the kids. The weather was iffy but I still absolutely love the Costa del Sol. The new Mall killed a day when the weather was really bad. Lots for kids and teens there.

I'd like to see more of the coast the other side of Fuengirola and beyond but agree that's better by car.

The Pez Espada

Crikeyalmighty · 28/03/2023 18:20

I would go to Nerja or Marbella and rent a nice apartment with pool . Estepona isn't bad either - Are you wanting a hotel OP ? As apartment would give you the space -

RosesInWater · 29/03/2023 19:23

If you don't want to drive there is a direct express bus from the airport to Estepona (great spot), and Marbella. About a tenner for the journey. Timings can be found on ALSA bus website.

I think Benalmadena or Fuengirola might suit you. It is close to the airport, easy access to Malaga city which is great for a day out, and plenty to see and do around Ben and Fuen, it is made for holidays, obviously! I mention the bus in case you might want to go further West.

If you stay in Ben or Fuen you can take the train to Malaga, and from there all points fan out. You don't need a car to see Seville, Granada, Cordoba, Ronda - all can be done by train or bus, although check the journey times to see if you will have enough time for a day trip. Train can also be taken to Caminito del Rey, El Chorro station but it's not for the faint hearted, if you want to take a look online!

Andalucia is great. Hope it all works out for you.

@RosesInWater
good points about the trains to Seville and so on.
We caught train to Cordoba from Malaga , was an hour I think.
Stayed a night in Cordoba , saw the sights, train back.

If I remember right, to get to Seville you’d catch the train to Cordoba and change to go south to Seville ?

I couldn’t work out how to get the train to El Chorro, is it a local line?

EggyBreads · 30/03/2023 10:38

Malaga itself is absolutely lovely.

Crikeyalmighty · 30/03/2023 14:59

@EggyBreads I agree- what a really beautiful old town!! We did a splitMalaga /old Marbella holiday 4 days in each- most enjoyable

OKFinally · 30/03/2023 15:16

We have been going to Nerja for nearly twenty years, as has my DB and his family, Burrianna to be exact, but the water quality on the beach is not very good and hasn’t been for the last few years.

My DB is being the brave one and breaking the cycle and is off to Calpe area of Costa Blanca in June, I shall report back accordingly. Grin

Hi, there is a direct train from Malaga to Seville. There are only a couple of trains a day to and from El Chorro but the frequency is increasing this year I think.

I find the Renfe app great for checking train routes, changes, and tickets. Hope that might help.

Mamalovestravel · 13/04/2023 18:27

Hi there, e love Mijas Costa or Fuengirola- Marbella can be a bit pricey, you can still find good self catering accommodation and save money. La Cala de Mijas is also a bit expensive for accommodation but Torrenueva is in walking distance & cheaper. For days out, I recommend in Malaga city, the imagination museum, and on Mijas Costa. I recommend Adventura Amazonia, Aqua Parc Mijas, Bioparc Fuengirola, and if you have a car then Mundo Manía in Estepona (further down coast). I highly recommend if you don’t have a car using Hello Costa… they do cheap transfers with your shopping already on board. really reasonable, and saves loads of time, queueing and faffing around in crowded supermarkets. www.hellocosta.com
