Not going on a booked holiday because the weather forecast is terrible?

Hi,

I have non-refundable flights and a (as yet refundable) hotel booked for a trip to Malta for 5 nights over Easter, but the weather forecast is rubbish - so much colder than I thought it would be. It’s forecast to be 17 degrees, just a couple of degrees warmer than London.

I only booked a trip so I could get some warmth (especially after the dreadful weather of the last few weeks…) and I really expected it to be around low 20s, based on previous years.

Anyway, I am thinking of just writing the price of the flights (£200) off and booking somewhere warm like Seville instead (29 degrees!). It’s a solo trip so no one else to consult or consider.

Has anyone ever done this? Just cut their losses and booked somewhere else? Am I being ridiculous?

Don't forget as well that is temp in shade and if you get a sun trap about of any breeze it could feel lovely and warm

junebirthdaygirl · 25/03/2023 07:13

If you are looking for sunshine l would go right down in Portugal. But recently we went to Tenerife and the forecast a week or two beforehand wasn't looking great. I was so disappointed. But when we got there it was a sunny 24 everyday and couldn't have been nicer.

Lcb123 · 25/03/2023 07:17

forecast for 2 weeks away won’t be that accurate and it’s an island so likely very changeble.

OneCup · 25/03/2023 07:30

Fair enough if you decide not to go but I wouldn't assume Sevilla will necessarily be hot. I have been to Andalusia a few times over Easter and it wasn't.

EggyBreads · 25/03/2023 07:31

Easter weather in Europe is a lottery. Last year we went to the algarve and it was changeable which is what I expected. Also been to mainland Spain for Easter and it was also changeable. Extremes of 30 degrees one day and raining and cold the next. You need to go further afield if you want guaranteed sunshine. Easter in Europe though is mostly great temps for exploring so I would stick with Malta and enjoy the cooler weather. If the sun does shine I'd take it as a bonus!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 25/03/2023 07:34

I wouldn't, most of Europe is cool at Easter so it's just as risky. If you want to go somewhere else see if your ticket is changeable for a fee to another destination though.

Oblomov23 · 25/03/2023 07:37

I'd still go. I wouldn't even consider cancelling. 19 or 20 degrees is perfectly pleasant. Needs a cardi in the evening. You will have a lovely time and will feel better for having 'got away'.

rookiemere · 25/03/2023 07:41

I think it's a bit early for a reliable weather forecast for Easter. I'd give it at least another week to check.

PinkPondQueen · 25/03/2023 07:50

Go to Malta! I made the same mistske a month ago of frantically checking the long range weather on Accuweather for our trip to the French Alps last week - it was forecast beautiful so I went ahead and booked quite a few activities which were totally dependent on good weather. Then, just a few days before leaving the forecast changed to clouds and rain and I was just devastated. We went anyway and guess what - the weather was glorious!

Weather forecasting is based on so many different models and even if you check the weather here every day, chances are they will get it wrong a lot of the time!

You're so far south in Malta I am pretty sure you will have great weather. Go for it!

rookiemere · 25/03/2023 07:52

And now I'm disappointed as we're booked to go to Porto for a few days over Easter. Sunny and 21 degrees until the day we arrive and it starts raining Envy. Need to take my own advice and hope it changes nearer the time.

slowquickstep · 25/03/2023 07:59

17 in Malta will be fine, any wind will be warm unlike the bitter wind we have here.

mrsbitaly · 25/03/2023 08:00

Yes I would if you are in a position to do so. I went to Greece and thought oh the weather will improve. I cried it rained the entire time heavily and the travel agent didn't tell us that they don't start fully opening the facilties until mid way through the holiday. Oh and as if that wasn't bad enough when it did open I got two black eyes from a water ride after my daughters head smacked me on the nose. And got home to find I was pregnant - probably why I was so emotional 😂 anyway the moral of the story is don't go on a holiday that is planned to rain or cold its a bad omen 😂

Meandfour · 25/03/2023 08:02

ld do it for the sake of £200. Malta isn’t somewhere I’d think of as warm in April.

IWannaKnowWhatHappensNext · 25/03/2023 08:04

@mrsbitaly crikey! Well at least you made some memories! 😂 hope you still managed to have a good time… and ducked out of the photos with those black eyes 🤭

maddy68 · 25/03/2023 08:04

Seville won't be 29 degrees at Easter ...you'll need to go to the canaries for anywhere near that but even there won't be that temperature by then

CottonSock · 25/03/2023 08:07

It's very likely to be !uch warmer in Malta than the UK. I think you would be unwise to cancel

CottonSock · 25/03/2023 08:10

And I've also been to Andalusia at Easter. The locals were in coats in the mountains and we were cold. Not so bad at coast but we got some heavy rain. We chose not to go to Seville as it was cold!

Mulhollandmagoo · 25/03/2023 08:13

Who did you book your flights through? They maybe non-refundable, but sometimes you can swap them to different flights and pay the difference?

CottonSock · 25/03/2023 08:14

Wow. Just looked at the forecast for Seville. Imagine what the summer will be like if it's so hot already.

LosingMyPancakes · 25/03/2023 08:14

We went to Malta a few years ago mid-April and the weather was fantastic. 20-25° and as everyone said, it feels much warmer than what similar temps would feel in the UK. Any warmer and you'd struggle to travel around and see the amazing sights!!

Usernamen · 25/03/2023 08:14

Thanks for the replies everyone. I’m due to fly on the 6th and the forecast for the 6th and 7th is showing as 17/18 degrees in Malta and 29 degrees in Seville.

But I think everyone is right - that could all change in a week! I’ll reassess then 😊

I wouldn’t trust a forecast more than 5/6 days out

but it will almost certainly be warmer than here and possibly perfect weather for sightseeing. As pp said the sun will be much stronger. Possibly not warm enough for sunbathing but not much of europe is reliably warm enough for sunbathing rbis time of year .

Check out the forecast over the next couple of weeks - Seville is very warm this Easter.

Yes, I think I should wait a few days before deciding. I would love a bit of sunbathing tbh - I’m eyeing up a hotel in Seville which has a rooftop pool. 👀 Perfect for a pool day if it stays 29 degrees! 😅 (I’ve been to Seville before so I’ve done the sites and can spare a day or two on this trip to just chill.)

Part of the problem is I get cold very easily. So I want to wear summer clothes (during the day) and walk around / sit outside all day, but I honestly couldn’t do that if it was 17 degrees. It would need to be minimum 22-23 degrees, but I appreciate that it doesn’t need to be that warm for it to feel warm in Malta, as people have been saying.

Let’s see what the forecast says in a week!
