Cheap but safe accommodation in Venice

DD and her friend will be interrailing this summer and are planning on visiting Venice. It seems so expensive! I suggested a camp site nearby so they can travel in easily and enjoy a pool etc which they are happy with but also keen to look at other options!

Any suggestions gratefully received. They are skint but excited about their trip and both working in bars to finance it!

Former monastery? Sound proofing isn't great and there might not be aircon. Rooms (twin beds) are about £120 per night. Is there a budget you are working to? Monastery Stays, Visits, Courses and Retreats | Monasteries.com

We have stayed in Villa Edera on Venice Lido which was lovely, maybe £100 or so a night for twin and by vaporetto and beach. It's about 5 minutes on vaporetto.

A suggestion

Get overnight train to Santa Lucia train station
Put bags into locker
This station is 20 minutes walk from Venice Rialto Bridge
Spend daytime in Venice, walking round. Venice is small or get boat trip
Get overnight train to next place, therefore saving on accommodation

Or is there a youth hostel ?

Boosterquery · 26/03/2023 22:39

Decades ago when I was a student we stayed in a youth hostel in Padua which I remember as being quite a nice town in its own right with regular trains to Venice.

GetOffYourPhone · 26/03/2023 22:49

As PP said, they could time it so they do an overnight on the train either side if they are going to visit just for one day. But if they want to stay in Venice overnight what is their budget?

GetOffYourPhone · 26/03/2023 23:03

For cheaper but a handy place to stay, they could look at Mestre as a base - near one of the train stations eg - Unaway Ecohotel Villa Costanza Venezia - €80 per night mid July for twin room. 5 mins from station. About 10-15 mins on the train into Venice. They can walk everywhere in Venice. Try Kayak.com for comparison prices across websites.

We did Venice in a day from Verona and stayed in the youth hostel there.

The approach I took was arrive by sleeper train and leave by sleeper train - maximises your days in Venice and minimises the spend on Venice accommodation...

TrainersAltonTowersWontKill · 27/03/2023 21:09

Haha, sleeper train 🤣. They're skint. That is not the best option here.

Mestre definitely. Camping Serenissima is around £25 a night for the 2 of them. Has a pool and the bus stop outside will take them into and out of Venice until midnight for 1.50 Euro

gogohmm · 27/03/2023 21:19

Venice is one of the most expensive places in Europe, beds in a 6 person dorm are expensive!

There's cheap hotels from around £65 a night (shared bathroom) in august this is, might be cheaper in July.

I’m assuming the poster just means reclining your seat overnight, or those ones you can pull out if you’re close to the people you’re travelling with — when we were interrailing in the 90s, we never paid for ‘sleeper’ berths.

TrainersAltonTowersWontKill · 27/03/2023 21:19

£35 a night in July. 20 minutes on the bus to Venice and they run all day and night with the stop directly outside.

Has a pool and restaurant and a shop.

Yeah, it's changed a bit since the 90s but they won't be reclining seats on the trains out of Venice. They'd also be paying a fair bit more. The cheapest way is a normal, regional day ticket. Extremely cheap in Venice. Plus, if they stay at a campsite they can actually spend more than one day there

"Venice is one of the most expensive places in Europe"

According to who though? It can be a hell of a lot cheaper than many cities. Just get your gelato outside of st marks square.

Bacareto de lele for snacks and wine that will set them back a meagre 80 cents.

2 euro gelato literally everywhere. 3 euro aperol spritz. Cheap train and bus in. Vaporetto pass is the most expensive part.

macshoto · 29/03/2023 19:35

A berth in a six berth couchette car from Vienna to Venice is €25-€35 on top of the ticket (vs. €3 for the reclining seat). I don't know if the eligibility for Interrail tickets to access these has changed from when I Interrailed, (a few years ago).

Yes it's more expensive than camping, but it's not bad value for the occasional longer run when Interrailling.

jocktamsonsbairn · 18/04/2023 18:25

Oh man I thought I had replied to this ages ago! Thank you for all your suggestions! They want to do a couple of days in Venice and I left them exploring the campsite option! Thanks for the help!
