£2000 budget - where can I go?

We have a budget of £2000 for (up to) a week in the Easter hols. That needs to cover accommodation and travel (although petrol is free), we can probably spend a bit more on activities / food when there (but not much). We are 2 adults and 2 kids aged 11 and 9. Where would you go? It seems I can afford nothing very nice.

Last year we did Northumberland at Easter and it was absolutely freezing and we said we'd never do it again. The cottage was £1000 (and not great) and then we spent about £80 a day doing castles, buying food etc and it was so cold we had to be indoors a lot and seemed an expensive week for not much fun. I am really hoping to go somewhere warm but not sure it's realistic on this budget.

Does anyone have any other ideas on here? We've done Cornwall and Norfolk quite a lot and been to N Wales (not so keen on the latter). None of them are exciting me but maybe I am just being really fussy.

Kids are of an age where they enjoy museums, shops and a bit of 'life' rather than just walks and beaches now. Not so fussed about kids clubs etc anymore. They would enjoy a proper hotel with pool holiday but I'm thinking this is probably not realistic on this budget!

If petrol is truly not an issue, you can get a week's Airbnb in France for as little as £400/£500.

Pearfacebananapoop · 22/03/2023 17:36

4 days in Spain!

Glitterbaby17 · 22/03/2023 17:37

What about an Airbnb in London? Lots of free museums etc and spaces like Covent Garden that are fun to wander around

gogohmm · 22/03/2023 17:55

You can do a week in Spain half board for that budget, also Italy, Greece and Turkey

@Anonhopingforbaby happy with France but the ferry crossing bit is £250 so I was wondering where we could drive that’s not too ridiculously far from Calais that’s nice…? Any tips? We are a 5 hour drive from Folkestone you see so I guess don’t want too far on the other side if we can avoid it.

London is a great choice but we’ve recently done it!

We've just booked 4 nights in Berlin for £1500 for 4 - budget airline and an apartment. Have a browse on the Ryanair/easyJet sites and see what's doable

I would be looking at going abroad too. If you can get AI or full/half board in a budget hotel (I go for aparthotels so I can make a brew/snacks) you won't need much spending money and it won't really matter if the hotel is a bit basic because it will be warm.
Of course this advice is useless if you haven't got passports....
Parkdean and Butlins aren't supposed to be too bad but I would go for south coast so the chances of it being a bit warmer are slightly higher.

Atissue123 · 22/03/2023 18:02

Yes we have passports. That was my thinking - if it’s warm we don’t have to spend on activities. Also happy to self cater.

Berlin is not a bad shout, been before and loved it but without the children.

One of the European Center Parcs?

knackeredmumoftwo · 22/03/2023 18:10

Use kayak and search for flights to anywhere - with your dates and see what it brings back - we love Porto - stayed on the outer southern side on the beach - had great walks / surfing and super cheap for food - or a Spanish costal city again cheap and lovely

France - about an half hour south of Calais's is the opal coast - white sand pretty towns around Wimerux

Or head to Dunkirk and then into Belgium - Bruges for a night or two and then a night or two on the coast De Panne area - or a European landal park

Isittimetogohomeyet · 22/03/2023 18:10

Eurocamp? Weather might not be wonderful I'm Northern France but you could pick one with a decent pool and activities. I was looking the other day and there were some really cheap ones over Easter.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 22/03/2023 20:13

playing around with the fare finder on ryanair, you could fly in the Easter hols from my local airport to (for example) Milan, Ibiza or Carcassonne for 4-5 nights for under £800 (including bags and fees). That would leave plenty for an Air B&B.

3WildOnes · 22/03/2023 20:22

Ibiza looks cheap to fly to at Easter. Then you could rent an apartment for week.

What about a cruise? We're going on MSC Virtuosa for 7 nights, four of us 2 adults, 9 and 12 year old) and it's come in at just short of £2k - all inclusive with drinks package. All went paid extra is £9 each for their shows (not compulsory but they are highly recommended) and a fun pass for the amusement arcades (£72). We're leaving Southampton and calling at Hamburg, Cherbourg and Le Havre. Very excited, it's our first time!
