Holiday for Single Mum with 16yr old DD

Hoping for some ideas and advice.
I am a single parent, I have only ever taken them on holiday's within the UK and the last time I went abroad myself was as a teenager with my parents.

My DD will be finishing early this year after her exams so want to use this opportunity to go on a 'proper' holiday abroad as it will be more affordable, but it is a very daunting thing when I am not used to travelling, let alone doing everything alone. It will just be us two.

I know I should probably go with a package holiday so most things are done for you, but I am also not even sure of a destination.

We don't really want a pool/beach holiday the whole time, maybe a day at a beach. A hotel with a nice pool to relax by for a day or so might be nice.

Its finding somewhere with things to do, that are easily accessible/bookable, suitable for both of us.
I want to avoid having to travel around once there too much, I would dread having to navigate transport in a foreign country. I need it to be as stress free as possible!

My first thought was Majorca too but have a think about Croatia too?

Corfu!! Something for everyone and I'd go self catering and enjoy the wander along the beachfront choosing where to eat in the evening. My teens/early twenties love Roda (Sandy beach) and Kassiopi (pebbly beaches so we don't go there for the beach!). There are quieter and livelier resorts too. I'd book a cheap Ryanair/EasyJet flight then a taxi - go onto FB and join Corfu forum so you'll get recommendations. Choose your accommodation and book direct to get it cheaper. You'll love it!

Fitbit to say I've been holidaying with my 2 as a single mum since they were wee!

Be aware that Southern Europe will be very hot in the Summer. I think Rome is a wonderful destination, but unless you're comfortable with very high temperatures I'd avoid in July and August. Ditto Florence and possibly Paris. Croatia also very hot in Summer.

I'm going to throw in Copenhagen. It felt like a very safe place, we got reasonably priced accommodation in the student area and the Copenhagen card covers transport and literally all the tourist attractions. We mostly ate at food markets or near our accommodation and I didn't feel it deserved its tag of being hugely expensive and was great fun to explore. I'd happily go back.

Budapest was great as well and you could happily spend some time in the spas which aren't pricey, but not sure how hot that is in Summertime.

I'd also have a look at skyscanner and see what flights are cheap and at good times - if you search everywhere it will show all options for a particular day. Then come back here and see what people think of the destinations.

Budapest was unbearably hot at points last August.

@FettleOfKish thats actually great to hear because we haven't been to Majorca for decades but I was a bit Confused when I tried to changed dates and everything was booked up.

although we do book a 2 bed apartment type room usually or bedroom with a separate living area with sofa bed type thing

That said I only want to go from my nearest airport and I'm inflexible about that so I do limit myself and that also limits the package holiday providers

It's really late to be booking any decent resorts

I'm taking my family with older teens to Majorca but our resort booked up months ago

There'll be rooms avail I'm sure in lots of decent places but do your research properly

Nah it's not. As someone in the industry you'd be surprised how many people book 1-2 months before they go. There's plenty of deals around right now.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 24/03/2023 19:36

I'd suggest:

Dubrovnik or Split.
Rhodes (near Rhodes Town)
Florence (my favourite city)
Budapest.

Slovenia? Beautiful country, relaxing, good food, good transport, everyone speaks English. Lots of activities to suit you both and that you can book on the spot.

LlynTegid · 28/03/2023 19:08

Even if you do not venture far from the hotel or beach, consider somewhere where one or both of you speak some of the local language. Appreciated just for ordering food/drink, basic greetings, for example.

CoolShoeshine · 29/03/2023 22:40

If you can get your head around the idea of a cruise you’ll probably find a week with p and o from Southampton in summer to Norwegian Fjords is cheaper than lots of the other options mentioned here.

Lisbon.
So many things to see - art, castles, monastery etc.; easy to get around by walking (and Ubers are insanely cheap); amazing food. An easy day trip by train to the beach and Sintra. It’s also cheap compared to UK.
We visited last summer with extended family, ages ranging from 8 to 70 and everyone loved it. We will definitely return.

Completely agree. So easy to navigate

Knackeredmommy · 30/03/2023 18:24

I'm taking my 15yo DD to Copenhagen next month.
