Has anyone booked Australia recently? If so - how much was your flight and when are you going? I am having a look for next year and the flight is coming up at £1,500 in economy! Any tips?

yes we are going next week booked in may last year flights are 1168 pp economy

marriednotdead · 20/03/2023 18:58

We booked in November and are here currently, cost around £1400 each and then another £450ish each on internal flights.
Make sure you book directly with the airline rather than a booking agent so that you can deal with them if there’s an issue- our return flight was booked with Opodo and they have been a PITA!

tummatina · 20/03/2023 19:50

yes definitely because the flight times have been changed several times.
yes the internal flights were extra of course.
hope you are having a good holiday

April used to be the cheapest time to fly there (pre-covid)- well to Sydney anyways. You can set up a tracker on sky scanner to alert you of law rates. I haven't looked recently but seems more than double the last time I went!

Thanks all. I managed to find a flight for less than £1,000 with Malaysian Airlines. Anyone flown with them? Singapore Airlines is a similar price

@tummatina @marriednotdead who are/did you fly with?

We went in October last year with Qantas and paid less than £900 each. Priced up similar again this year and they were over £1400 each. That's the covid tax I guess.

Rooma · 20/03/2023 21:49

Going next week. £1300pp. Booked probably 8-9 months ago. Be wary of flight time on cheap tickets- 40hr trip isn't worth saving £400... if you're going uk to Syd I'd be wanting trips less than 30hrs and as close to 24hrs as possible.

BritInAus · 20/03/2023 21:55

Given the choice of Malaysian or Singapore, I'd pick Singapore every time. I live in Aus and have travelled home to the UK 15+ times, several times on each of those airlines. Singapore wins hands down in every area - unless you particularly want a stop over in KL?

Maybe, but demand is back up from last year, so market forces are in play, plus there's a hike in UK Airport Passenger Duty on any sectors >5500 miles that comes in from 1st April.

I agree with Singapore.

We flew in with Malaysian to Melbourne, no issues and very friendly staff.
Internal flights are with Jetstar which seems to be regarded as the Ryanair of Australia, only one short flight so far so not formed an opinion yet. Going home with Qatar via Doha from Brisbane. Was the more expensive flight so will be interesting to see how it compares.

Definitely this.

Singapore airlines are decent. I prefer Emirates or Qantas but Emirates are always expensive and Qantas have been since Covid. Singapore are reliable and I’ve never had an issue with them.

Agree with others on checking the flight time carefully - they can be very variable and you should be able to do it in 26 or less in my experience.

Flatandhappy · 21/03/2023 04:26

I’m very surprised Singapore and Malaysia are the same price, Singapore is by far the better of the two. As others have said look very carefully at the total length of the flight. Having said that DD’s friend came to Sydney last week and flew with Malaysia via KL. No problems although I think the layover was quite long.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 21/03/2023 05:10

I found the cheapest flights are the ones that depart and arrive on a Tuesday-Wednesday.

Singapore airport is easier to navigate with DC than Hong Kong from memory. The flight with Malaysian was lovely, but Singapore was always that little bit nicer. Staff on both were always happy to help with toddlers and would even carry DS around to give me a chance to eat when I flew solo.

Singapore airport - once the closest toilet with baby change facilities was cordoned off. I asked one of the (very heavily armed 😳) men where I could go with DS and he absolutely insisted on opening it up for me to use. They are so bloody marvellous and helpful with young children!!!

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 21/03/2023 05:11

Sorry, KL, not Hong Kong!

Jowak1 · 21/03/2023 07:57

I'm going to visit my friend in Perth in October and I booked a flight with Singapore Airlines in January and it cost me £1000. I thought that was a really good price as they are an excellent airline.

tummatina · 21/03/2023 09:26

we are flying with singapore airlines at the time we booked it was really as covid stuff was settling down and they had an offer where you could make changes. we are flying into sydney with a gap of 6 hours in singapore.
Back fromPerth gap of one hour
in singapore -hope it works out ok seems very short transfer time.

Londre · 21/03/2023 22:36

Thanks all. I decided to bite the bullet and book Singapore Airlines. They weren’t much more expensive than Malaysian Airlines and the flight times are both good. Can’t wait!
