Inspire me for a UK holiday

Hi, thinking about booking a UK holiday for the summer (school holidays), but looking for some inspiration.

We have 2 kids, 8 and 13 live in Cardiff and aren't keen on very long drives generally, so often do Pembrokeshire which we love, but thinking about where else we could look. Ideally within 3 hours drive, although might be willing to push that a bit for the right place. We do have a friend in Exmouth so have thought of we head to south coast we could incorporate stopping off there but that's not an essential.

Things we want /like:
Very close to beaches - including some sandy.
Not too isolated - it's nice to have a couple of different places to visit in a short drive, choice of cafes and restaurants, maybe a zoo or theme park for a day out, supermarket etc.
However, not too built up either- we like pretty scenery and small towns / villages. Not bothered about shopping or amusement arcades.
We enjoy both holiday cottages and caravan sites. Nice to be on a site for a pool / kids playground but we don't tend to use the entertainment etc much so it's not always worth the money, so open to either.
Ideal world I love a sea view or walking distance to coast, if budget allows!

To give you an idea, we've loved holidays to both Saundersfoot and Lydstep in Pembs and Nodes point in Isle of Wight, as they have a good balance of being near lots to do but also pretty, not too built up etc.
Broadhaven and new quay in west Wales were both also great for scenery, beaches etc, but if weather had been less good I'm not sure we'd have found enough to do without a long drive.
On the other end of the scale, goodrington near Paignton and Poole were both great holidays for things to do, but maybe less pretty and 'holiday feeling'. We did westward ho in north Devon last year which ticked a lot of boxes but I didn't love it somehow. Plus wouldn't really want to do north Devon 2 years in a row.

Hoping the Mumsnet hive mind can suggest some good towns, areas or even holiday parks that might suit us!

Looe or Bude?

Sprig1 · 20/03/2023 12:50

Exmoor or the Elan Valley.

Looe or Bude?

Thanks. Those do look nice. I'm a bit worried Cornwall in the summer has a reputation for being excessively busy - any experiences of those places in the holidays? At least they aren't too far into Cornwall so travel time not as long as at Ives, which I've loved pre kids in term time but avoided since!

We're pretty keen for coastal so wouldn't be looking at Elan valley i don't think? Anywhere particular in Exmoor?

I’ve visited both in summer holidays and yes, they’re busy, but not unpleasantly so. My advice would be to stay within walking distance of a beach to avoid parking chaos and jams, get to the beach early and leave early, and pre-book places to eat.

cocksstrideintheevening · 20/03/2023 13:53

I won't go back to corneal in the summer, it's a nightmare. Isle of Wight is fab. Is Norfolk too far?

Zipps · 20/03/2023 14:06

Lyme Regis or West Bay in Dorset
Also Retallack in Cornwall - we loved it but quite pricey.

I like Dulverton but if you want to be v close to the coast you could go for Dunster or Porlock. You would be an hour from the coast in the Elan Valley, is that too far?

mumto2teenagers · 20/03/2023 14:09

We really like Warmwell Holiday park in Dorset, but it isn't really close to a beach, you would need to drive.

Yes, I was thinking of max 15 min drive from coast really, walking distance in an ideal world!

Yeah I don't see us going as far as Norfolk or Northumberland when there are so many closer places. One day when Ds is less travel sick maybe as I hear they are lovely!

What about North Wales?
Loads to see and do some nice big city nearby Liverpool?
I feel it has all you are looking for
some ideas here

LlynTegid · 21/03/2023 07:15

I second North Wales.

Simplelobsterhat · 21/03/2023 07:35

Thanks both. I guess I hadn't considered North Wales much as it takes a surprisingly long time to get there from Cardiff due to lack of motorway (quicker to get to most of English south coast) and I have memories of a childhood holiday to Rhyl / prestatyn area which I remember as not being very nice. However, I'm sure there are much nicer bits, so should consider it. Any particular areas you'd recommend?

Have come to the conclusion I'm looking for Saundersfoot again but somewhere I haven't been before!
IE scenic, small enough to walk around and feel a bit like a village but with a few places to eat etc, on the coast, ideally a sandy beach and harbour, or short drive to a sandy beach if it just has a pebble beach / rocky coast, close to some other nice beaches and a few attractions such as castle, zoo, theme park, gardens, other small towns/ villages or scenic areas for a day out away from the beach for a change.

Out of the suggestions so far Looe, west bay, Lyme Regis and going back to isle of wight (but doing a different bit) to before are appealing most. Anymore thoughts about if we'd like any of them (and where on Isle of Wight is good) welcome, but other ideas welcome too!

We like white cliff bay holiday park on the Isle of Wight, direct beach access from the site.

Funf · 21/03/2023 07:47

Saundersfoot

North Wales, could you not travel up through wales calling at places on the trip?

Rhyl has a nice sea front and beach and has had a lot spent on it but its still a Fish Chips and Bingo place.
The Conwy area is a good base as its quite central to many things

Water Falls, Aber is spectacular info here

Look at this route, it shows a few nice places Rhos on Sea has a real village feel few shops but a great beach, Angel bay to see the seals, Dyserth Llandudno.
www.donthibernate.co.uk/route-1-llandudno-from-m62-m56/
llangollen is about an hours drive inland
www.donthibernate.co.uk/winter-trip-to-llangollen-and-motor-museum/

Not even mentioned Bala, Barmouth, Harlech, llyn Peninsular, Criccieth, Llanbedrog, Abersoch.
Whilst in the area Liverpool is well worth the trip and a change from the beach or if you have bad weather
www.donthibernate.co.uk/liverpool/

Funf · 21/03/2023 07:58

You could travel via Aberporth, Newquay, Aberystwyth.
www.donthibernate.co.uk/route-10-lad-dad-trip-to-mid-wales-and-internal-fire-museum/

Cardiff to Porthmadoc on the Llyn Peninsular is 3hr 45min, but then you are in a great area just outside Snowdonia but near beaches, it would be good to spend a few days in that are then move nearer to Conwy area as more to do if the weather is bad. Porthmadoc has a travel lodge too

Simplelobsterhat · 21/03/2023 08:20

Thanks, lots to look at!

We went to Mevagissey and Falmouth 2 summers ago in August and while some places were busy ish they were fine. We loved Falmouth, close to beaches and you could drive to the Lizard for kynqnce cove etc.

FriedEggChocolate · 21/03/2023 12:04

I'd say Galloway in south west Scotland. Straight up the M6, so relatively straight forward from Cardiff albeit a bit longer than you'd like. Always reminds me of Cornwall but without the crowds. Fab beaches and small towns.

Siezethefish · 21/03/2023 12:06

Conwy - lovely wee town, castle, beaches, snowdonia on the doorstep, treetops thing nearby, surf snowdonia, newborough beach on anglesey, i could go on...

MummaYah · 21/03/2023 12:40

Maenporth Estate near Falmouth is good, near a beach and onsite pool and playground.

Dorset/ Hampshire

Anywhere particular you think fits the bill there? Definitely interested in Dorset (but not the Poole end as we've done that and found it was a bit built up - didn't feel as holiday -ish as some places).

Probably won't do Hampshire as we visit family near Portsmouth a lot.
