Two weeks in Austria

I’m planning two weeks in Austria this summer with young children and wondered if anyone has itinerary ideas. Flying in and out of Vienna and will hire a car. Willing to drive around a lot. Looking to see Hallstatt and lake/mountain scenery as well as a few days in Vienna. Ideally staying in self catering/holiday rentals or hotels where we can have two separate rooms connected together. I’ve read about Kinderhotels and planning to incorporate for a few nights.
All tips and recommendations for locations in Austria would be most appreciated!

We’re off to Austria for 2 weeks in the summer as well! We’re doing 3 nights in Salzburg, 8 nights in Soll in the Tyrol (we’ve been before and love it there) and 3 nights in Vienna. Can’t wait!

We're off to Austria for two weeks in the summer as well!
We're staying in schladming but driving across so may stop at places overnight (though maybe Luxembourg rather than Austria). We may possibly go to Vienna for a night as well.
I love the mountain rollercoasters Grin and going to Google scholß hellbrun and the grossglocker road. DS plans on doing vía ferrata type things!

Every Kinderhotel seems totally sold out but there are a fair few Air BnBs etc available. Also looking at farm stays. It’s just overwhelming looking at the map of Austria and trying to pick places to go! Given that we’re driving from (and back to) Vienna I think we’ll only aim as far west as Salzburg but it seems plenty to do in that area.

@FrequentFlyer96

To get into the mountains you need to be an hour west of Salzburg, which will get you to Lofer, Zell am See, Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Maria Alm etc.

For farm holidays. look at the Austrian Tourist Board website (austria.info) or the local Tourist Office websites, which are usually [town].com - e.g. www.saalbach.com

As an example of a combined farm and accommodation ("Pension" means B&B or guest house in Austria) see Pension Vorderlengau - www.vorderlengau.com

@Havanananana we are staying an hour south east of Salzburg but will be in the mountains?

Don't want to hijack, but any recommendations for the Carinthia region is southern Austria? We have booked a glamping site there in August. We are then going to Slovenia, can't decide whether to do 4 nights each or 5 Austria and 3 in Slovenia..

@Indiaplain - buy the Kaernten card
https://www.kaerntencard.at/sommer/

Its really good value as allows you to use the cable cars ( often €25 per go now), boats on lakes, zoo access, attractions, and outdoor pools etc. plus other discounts to certain spas.

where you go depends on where exactly your staying as carinthia is pretty big so would still take about 3 hrs to drive across if your on one side. And age of children if you have. It can be very hot in Summer ( was nearly 40 on and off last summer), so ideally you go off somewhere early, lunch and head to the lakes to cool off in the afternoon

Thank you @Caspianberg - that is really useful info! Will definitely look into getting one of those.

Yes, there are mountains to the south and east of Salzburg. The larger resorts are south (Wagrain, Obertauern etc) or west (Zell am See, Saalbach etc.) of Salzburg, but there are mountains in all directions from the city where you can relive your Julie Andrews moments. Where exactly are you staying? The Tourist Office website for the area will have plenty of information about the area and attractions.

Appreciate this post is a couple of years old now but I’m planning a two week trip next summer with my littles. Just wondered if you’d summarise your itinerary and what worked well in the end?
