Where in England for august holiday w baby & 6yo

So I'm turning my thoughts towards our next holiday ( not had one in over 2 years !)
Of course I'd like a hot holiday abroad but I'm leaning towards a holiday we can get to w the car to save us some hassle.

Finances probably won't allow much so we're thinking of an airb&b within the proximity of baby and 6yo friendly activities.

My question is, can anyone recommend areas in England that meet this criteria? We're London based so ideally something within 4/5hrs drive but could be flexible!

Isle of Wight

Dorset

When our eldest was 6, we had a lovely stay just east of Exeter. We took the dc to Diggerland, Crealy, Wildwood Escot, Pecorama and had a beach day at Exmouth.

Dorset. Somewhere like Swanage would work well.

Devon has plenty of places to visit with young children, the activities are often aimed at young children.

The Big sheep, The Milky Way are both aimed at children. They are located along the north Devon coast. Westward Ho has rockpools, big beach for playing, Appledore you can go crabbing with the 6 year old and get the boat to Instow beach.

many places to stay, Braddock is usually a very good price

North Devon is lovely, have a look at Woolacombe or Croyde. Loads of beautiful beaches and seaside towns to explore.

Beat me to it!
Woolacombe has some lovely beaches, nice cafes & places to eat plus a little funfair type place.
Croyde is quieter but great if you like walking/beaches.

was also going to suggest Swanage... Bournemouth if you want a bit more going on and slso a sandy beach.....also Weymouth..best beach for sand castles apparently!
monkey world and tank museum our kids favourites for visits..

not been but friends enjoyed butlins at that age as lots on site for kids to do..
new forest/Littlehampton for beach/funfair

Agreeing with Dorset suggestions. We had one of our best UK holidays near Weymouth when dc were little. Great coast, loads to do for little ones.

mangodreams · 11/03/2023 08:15

I agree with North Devon - Lynmouth was always a favourite of ours when I was little. 1950s style seaside village, great cliff walks and riverside walks plus a funicular!

Twizbe · 11/03/2023 08:39

Isle of Wight. So much to do there for kids

YouNeverCanTellWithBees · 11/03/2023 08:44

I have dc aged 5 and 1 and we're looking at isle of wight

MajorCarolDanvers · 11/03/2023 08:48

With children that age you should avoid the school holidays and save a fortune.

Second half of August the schools are back in Scotland and you've got the best chance of good weather.

Lots of lovely places here.

Sorry Op I know your eldest is 6. I meant you can get cheaper in Scotland by avoiding our holidays.

Isle of Wight (kids love the ferry)
Cornwall

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 11/03/2023 10:24

I like the Poole area. Poole harbour is love and your 6 year old would probably enjoy getting the ferry to brownsea island so see the red squirrels. The beaches on the island are lovely with warm shallow water.

The studland bay beaches are beautiful. You’ve got monkey world and the tank museum close by. You’re also near enough the new forest for a day trip. Your 6 year old would enjoy splash down in Poole on a rainy day. you’re also close enough for trips to the sea life centres at Bournemouth (quite small) and Weymouth (much bigger). You’re also not far from moots valley where if your 6 year old is adventurous they may enjoy the junior go ape trail and there’s lots of lovely play areas all through the woods. There’s also lots of national trust places to visit on the area if you’re members.

I really love the area, but have never been on holiday there so can’t really advise on where to stay etc. it’s a day trip away for us.

We loved Norfolk and Derbyshire with DD around that age.

Devon is lovely but I found it got really expensive in the Summer holidays.

maranella · 12/03/2023 09:13

So many lovely places to go with small DC in the UK. We had lovely holidays in Dorset, Norfolk, Lake District, Pembrokeshire, Northumberland, W. Sussex, Cotswolds, N. Yorkshire. They are an ideal age to do a day on the beach, farm parks, boat trips, trams, fossil hunting, etc.

SoShallINever · 12/03/2023 14:59

North Norfolk for the seals at Blakeney, the beach at Wells and Holkham, the strawberry picking, farm shops, wildlife at Cley, BeWilderwood (which has got to be every 6 year olds dream). Wells to Walsingham railway. Alpaca trekking.

mistermagpie · 12/03/2023 15:55

Last year we went Berwick with a 2, 5 and 6 year old and we absolutely loved it! Loads of lovely beaches to potter around on, a great brand new leisure centre with a fab kids pool for rainy days and plenty of stuff to do locally for everyone. We loved it so much we're going back this year!

MrsMoastyToasty · 12/03/2023 16:00

Salcombe or Swanage. The beaches on the south coast don't tend to have the big waves that attract surfers and are probably more suited to families with tinies .
