Montreal - great family holiday destination?

We have some Covid-related British Airways vouchers to use up and upon discovering it costs as much to fly to southern Europe as it does North America during school holidays, I fancy going to Montreal after falling in love with a friend's Instagram feed of the city 🙈 My husband isn't convinced as he thinks it will still be an expensive trip and that Montreal is basically not that worth it...

Anyone who's been who can recommend or advise against?

i liked montreal, lovely city had a european vibe - plenty of things to see and do and you can always base yourself there and go to other canadian cities as well depending on how long you are going for

Nope, Your husband is correct.

Go to Rome, Paris, somewhere wonderful.

I lived in Montreal for 3 years as a student. It has great food & nightlife and a lively arts & culture scene. On the other hand it's a small city and I remember it being pretty rundown/grubby. Things might have changed since then though. There are some family-friendly things to do as a tourist in the summertime eg there's a famous jazz festival and a comedy festival I think. A lot of people combine a trip to Montreal with a visit to Quebec City.

I loved Montreal but I don't think it's a city to spend lots of time in, we stayed for 4 days I think. Too far and too expensive for a city break from Europe.

We did a road trip, arriving in Montreal, driving up north for a couple of days, then towards Quebec City, stayed there for 4 days and back to Montreal.

Mix of sightseeing, hikes.

It is a really long flight for a small city.

If you combine it with a deeper dive on Quebec it may be worth it. Quebec City is a 3/4 hour drive (which means expensive car hire).

It would be a nope from me.

WimbleOfWombledon · 06/03/2023 20:28

I used to live there.

It's a long way to go for not much to do or see - in comparison with other European or North American cities.

I found it quite dull tbh.

I've been for a work trip and think I would have loved it as a student but I wouldn't go there for a holiday.

glowfrog · 06/03/2023 22:20

Thanks, Everyone! This would be a one week trip and I was thinking of going to Quebec City as well.

Seems to be a lot against so will think again.

We've done Paris and it's so expensive. And not worth flying to when you have the Eurostar.

Rome could be good, although it strikes me as a pretty hectic city?

For a week I would fly to Boston or New York.

Quebec City is very nice but from personal experience I would highly, highly recommend Vancouver Island. It is absolutely stunningly beautiful. My most favourite place on earth

Vanillalime · 07/03/2023 20:50

I’ve visited Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City & Ottawa. Montreal was probably the place I was most looking forward to but the one I preferred the least.

Combining Montreal with another city is a good idea - Ottawa is nearest and was fab. Lots of cool museums, Parliament, Rideau canal & the ByWard market area were all good to visit.
