Specifically for a weekend break at the end of March.

Is it worth it? Is it actually quite warm? And where would you go?

We had terrible weather so didnt see it at its best. Its one of the few places i would never go back to. we stayed in sliema which was quite busy with traffic/building work. valletta was ok and we enjoyed the boat trip round the bays. lots of cruise ships dock there, so it gets very busy when they are docked. i wouldnt hire a car as the drivers are all mad.

I haven’t been, but going for the first time this April.
R.e. the weather, you can look up past weather online - in late March last year the temperature in Valletta was 17-25 degrees during the day.

It’s a super destination- bit surprised at the pps. Lots to see, interesting landscape, sunny, safe.

We went end of Feb, wasn't cold, but not hot, didn't need coats, slight chill in the evening.
It's a beautiful island, loads of history and places to visit.
We bought bus passes, there's three routes from what I remember, red and blue for each side of the island, and green for gozo, all open top, hop on and off when you like type thing and regular.

We were lucky enough to be in Valetta for the annual carnival, which is a beautiful town, but so much to do and see.
The old castle town at Mdina is a must, big walled town , lots of little shops and cafes.

The local beer is nice, called Cisk I think.

Whammyyammy · 05/03/2023 16:51

Mdina, so beautiful

Malta?

I’ve been, wouldn’t go back

Went a February half term. One wet day did the catacombs apart from that able to lunch outdoors. Travelled around by buses would love to go back one day. Unfortunately all the very old buses have gone to be replaced by modern ones.

faffadoodledo · 05/03/2023 17:08

Went one late Easter years ago. It was perfectly lovely and hot. Pretty and historic too.
I wouldn't go back but only because I don't tend to return anywhere!

Ok! I’ve been five times and would go back- weird, eh?! 😁

Chickydoo · 05/03/2023 17:10

I went in November, it was cold, dreary and everything was closed. I am sure it's better when the sun is out, most places are

Lavender14 · 05/03/2023 17:11

I've been twice and would go back. Lovely place, really scenic, loads to do, not super expensive, good food, most speak English as lots of ex pats, great healthcare, everything is close together and the weather is lovely. Gozo and comino well worth visiting too. I'd go for longer to be honest, even though its a small island there is so much to do and each town offers something different. Its not much of a beachy place, couple of beaches but it's not that type of holiday. You'll want to visit Valletta, Mdina, Marsalokk, some of the ancient sites such as the Hypogeum if that's what you're into and the islands for a slower pace. There's plenty of nature sites too if you like walking etc. Scuba diving is some of the best.

Lavender14 · 05/03/2023 17:16

What I would say is lots of areas are very up and coming so there's a lot of development so research where you stay because there could be lots of construction. Buses are greatly improved they had a huge grant a few years back to redo their roads and transportation system which was much better the second time I went so even if you wanted to stay in a cheaper area, you're easily connected to the entire island. Places like St Julians etc are very busy. I've stayed in Mehellia (spelling is probably off) which is quieter and Birzebuggia which wasn't massive but had all I needed. They have lots of carnivals and festivals and go all out for these in some towns so worth researching if anything is on when you're there.

No

We were looking at Malta last year, but after this happened, no chance

Malta is marmite I love it personally. We used to go loads as kids and I remember when taking the bus felt like putting your life on the line 😂😂😂

chocolateisavegetable · 05/03/2023 19:47

I’ve been several times. You have to be careful which part you stay in as some parts are great and some pretty awful. Mdina, Mosta Dome and Valletta are must-sees.

LindorDoubleChoc · 06/03/2023 13:05

Thanks for all replies! We decided against Malta in the end and this was very useful.

I also wouldn't go back. Dull, ugly island, full of utterly vile corruption. Not for me!

ZeldaB · 06/03/2023 13:14

Malta was actually for me one of my least favourite holidays. Lots of beautiful rock but just not much to do. The boats of refugees parked offshore shore staring at your (rocky) beach is a bit intense too.

It felt like a place for a business meeting rather than a holiday.

For me - Italy, Cyprus, Egypt, Morocco, Africa, but not Malta.
