Wanted to share my experience as I have just returned from 12 days in Japan and know I got a lot of info here before I left and would like to pass it on ;-)

My brother, niece (16) daughter (16) and I all travelled to Japan mid-Feb for a 10 day organised tour. Flew with Qatar airways. Cannot fault them. Flights were full on all legs and a delay on the way out had us running for the plane in Doha to make the Narita flight. Flight time was 9hrs from Doh-Narita on the way out and 13hrs Narita -Doh on the way back. Flight to Doha roughly 7 hours each way, bit longer on the return.

Japan is not long open to visitors since Covid lockdowns and it showed. Getting through Narita was a massive pain as they check all certs etc. We had pre-registered on the app and had screenshots of all barcodes etc but it was not enough and I had to get internet access to make it all work. Took about 1.5 hours to get to the baggage belt after arrival but a big plus is that our bags were waiting for us. I booked an airport hotel for the night cos I had zero interest in dragging teenagers into Tokyo on a late Friday evening after travelling for so long.

I lived in Japan a long time ago so for me it was just fantastic to be back again. For the rest of my group it was a totally new experience. The first day I took the teenagers to Tokyo Disneyland. It’s a fun place but like everywhere else in Japan it was packed. Hours of queues for everything. I shipped the bags from the airport to our hotel and just took enough stuff to get me through to the next day as the bags take 24-36 hours to be delivered. Did this a few times on the trip with all our bags and it is such a lifesaver not hauling bags on public transport in Japan.

We had 3 days in Tokyo. Did all the highlights, Shibuya, Shinkuku, Yoyogi Park, Harajuku, Akihabara, Odiba, Ginza etc. the teenagers loved the shopping - one loves anime and was in her element. It is a consumer nation so every turn had shopping and vending machine opportunities. We also had amazing food, visited a cat cafe, went to Joypolis (Sega adventure park) and went to Karaoke etc. loved all of it - including Tsukiji fish markets and the Imperial palace. The craziness was intoxicating and it was amazing to be back. We wore masks all the time there. Everybody does.

On day 4 we travelled to a Nikko- a small town in the mountains. Took hours from Tokyo by train but so worth it. We stayed in a traditional inn which had its own onsen. Glorious and so lovely after our daily visits to temples, shrines and snowy peaks. On the second day we hiked again through the snow and spent the afternoon loving the hot springs. Glorious few days - it was cold at night (-7) but the days were fresh and bright. Loved Nikko. Great spot and amazing udon noodles.

Day6-10 we spent in Kyoto. Loved it there. We went to all the highlights and spent a great afternoon wandering around Gion - the girls all wore the kimonos that we rented for the day. They looked so beautiful. We got the Shinkansen which was an adventure all itself. Loved every minute of Kyoto. So beautiful and we had lovely weather. Had sushi, teppanyaki, ramen and tempura there. Love Japanese food.

spent our final evening in Tokyo after travelling back from Kyoto. Again on the Shinkansen - this is where we left the group behind. We had joined them on day 2 in Tokyo and 15 of us had been on the adventure together. Have to say joining up with the group was fab as we had a guide who was very knowledgeable and experienced! Great way to see the country and made some amazing friends from all over the world.

The last night we pushed the boat out and stayed in Shinagawa, Tokyo in a 5 star hotel. We did more shopping and we went for Shabu Shabu with some of my old friends. It was lovely to finish the holiday on a high note.

Any questions at all just ask. We had the best time and I am happy to share any tips etc for those interested in the trip.

Japan is definitely on my bucket list. Your trip sounds fantastic.

hadenoughforever · 02/03/2023 05:55

Sounds wonderful, would love to go. Is is difficult getting around speaking only English?

Dyslexicwonder · 02/03/2023 05:55

We were there in January for the skiing agree amazing.

PurplePositivity · 02/03/2023 07:15

That sounds amazing! Japan is somewhere I'd love to visit.

Can I be cheeky and ask roughly how much it cost? I am saving into Premium Bonds and hoping a big win will help my cause it how big a win do I need?

CarolNoE · 02/03/2023 08:31

Thanks for the update. Great to hear you had a lovely time. I am inspired to go to Japan after reading the threads on here the last few months. x

Who did you book with and how much did it cost would be my first (and rather cheeky - sorry!) questions.

lostinfusion · 02/03/2023 12:00

We are planning on visiting next year (have been before) - would you recommend Disney or was it just too busy? Was there any problems with getting onto rides due to height/weight etc as DSS is built like a rugby player & 6ft 3

happyfishcoco · 02/03/2023 12:16

I love Japan! can I know how much do you spend for the whole trip per person?

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 02/03/2023 12:21

I'm going next month (can't wait!). Self guided but booked through a tour operator. 2 weeks in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Includes all ground transportation, accommodation, Universal Studios, museum/sightseeing tix and a few guided tours. £8k for me, DH and DS13.

Thanks for your trip review OP, so helpful!

Dyslexicwonder · 02/03/2023 12:44

We were lucky:
Flights were £3.5K for 4, booked in September
Hotel was £3.4K and we took 5K with us to cover food, lift passes, car hire etc. We actually brought over a thousand pounds back, so total spend probably 11k for 14 nights skiing for 4 adults. As I say amazing.

Summerdaisyboo · 02/03/2023 13:03

Glad that some of you are finding this helpful. In relation to price we took the trip with intrepid on their basic package. That was €1600 per person (I am not in the UK) and flights were another €900 each! The package included all accommodations and all walking tours and most travel but we had to pay for the return Shinkansen ourselves from Kyoto-Tokyo and any additional nights we stayed outside of the 9 day tour and entries to shrines and temples etc. We spent about €1500 for the 2 of us on shopping, Disneyland, hot springs and meals etc so all in €7.5k so roughly £6.7k. That was for 13 days including flying days for my daughter and I.

It was worth every penny. The memories I have with my daughter, brother and niece will last a lifetime. I am so glad we did this.

In relation to Disneyland- it’s crazy at the weekend and they also have Disney Sea which is the second park - the app for both parks showed wait time was about the same for rides in either park. I can imagine it would be quieter during the week. The park isn’t massive. V similar to Paris.

All my pics are on my phone and not yet on social media but when I do if anyone wants to see please send me an IM. I have included a few of Kyoto, Nikko and Tokyo.

Oh god. I've now had to add Japan onto my ever-lengthening bucket list.. ! Glad you had an amazing time!

PurplePositivity · 02/03/2023 18:21

Thank you so much I was thinking about £5k for both of us, best take DH!

Think it'll he next year or 2025 but it's not out of my reach which is good.

Bleakhouser · 02/03/2023 19:36

Oh I’m going in 3 weeks I can’t wait!

can you tell me more about narita, do you mean that the screenshots of the QR codes aren’t enough and you still had to log on to show them?

Hellocatshome · 02/03/2023 19:41

Japan is on my list for me and DH when the children have flown the nest. Would we manage to negotiate trains/hotels/attractions etc on a multi location trip without a guide and zero Japanese?

HappySpade · 03/03/2023 06:37

Thanks for the info on using the entry app and what it's like in person. My family of 4 is headed there next week and I have all those QR codes printed and screenshot.

savvy7 · 03/03/2023 18:31

Can you advise which hotels you stayed in at Tokyo and Kyoto please and whether you would recommend, manythanks

UsherBobble · 19/06/2023 08:31

I know this is an old thread but also interested in which hotels you stayed at as booking currently for July. Thank you

Jessforless · 10/10/2023 14:15

Sounds Amazing! Currently looking to book for April, how did you buy your Disneyland tickets as some people have said you need to book a certain package and select days and some people have said you can only buy them on the day. Finding the different guides online a bit of a minefield…

Summerdaisyboo · 10/10/2023 18:19

I bought the Disneyland Tokyo tickets with the Klook app. Just had to select the date and the tickets were available instantly. B handy - also used the app for team labs, kimono tickets etc.

Oh brilliant thank you! Do you think one day in Kyoto is enough? Can’t seem to fit it all in to Easter holidays 😂

Orquid · 12/10/2023 09:36

We are going next year. What are the restrictions? Didn’t realise you still have to show certificates and wear a mask

Jessforless · 13/10/2023 15:41

I didn’t realise this either, would love to hear about it too…
