Where are you staying, not looking for the exact place, just the area.

If in Nice centre, and you have three days, first of all get your walking shoes on and do a bit of the Promenade des Anglais. Then get the little choo choo train from the city end of the Promenade (the hill is a killer!) up to the Chateau (Castle Hill), it is fab up there and the views are amazing. Walk back down.

You have to see the old town and the Cours Saleya (flower market) very atmospheric and lots of lovely restaurants. The tram will take you there. The main shopping area is on Ave. Jean Medecin and surrounding streets, again the tram gets you there. Very busy place...

Yes take the train to Monaco although I think it is very over rated and EXPENSIVE. But do go to say you've been there, we all did! I prefer the trip to Ventigmilia just on the Italian border, the Friday market there is good if you are into that sort of thing.

I would recommend at least a few hours in Cannes, take the train or bus. Yes it is high end, but there are ordinary people living there too! It is very nice. The area around Rue Meynadier is full of little shops and cafes and full of locals, that always impresses me!

Have a lovely time and pack it in!

Thanks a million, I think we are staying city centre. Sister organising that bit. Great tips.

Watching for tips. We are going in June, staying near the port.

Yes, defo do Monaco! As PP said, it's expensive but a nice experience. I went by car (someone else drove) and the views along the way were beautiful.

If you have a couple of hours to kill before checking in to your accommodation or on the last day before your flight, Parc Phoenix near the airport is good for a stroll (provided you don't have to roll a suitcase around).

Agree, definitely see Monaco, particularly Monaco-Ville which is the part high up on the headland. There are stunning views from up there and you can do a tour of the royal palace. The oceanographic institute is also up there and is well worth a visit.

PinkPondQueen · 26/02/2023 18:09

Also Villefranche is absolutely stunning and is in-between Nice and Monaco.

www.villa-ephrussi.com/en Is worth a visit and is an easy bus ride along the coast. Also, Eze, a village up in the hills, is amazing if you have time - again it's a short train/bus ride away

bookish83 · 26/02/2023 18:52

Antibes is on the same trainline and lovely. The old port and coast walk is worth a walk round too

SomersetBrie · 26/02/2023 18:56

St Paul de Vence is a lovely half day trip and Villefranche the place to go for a quick swim.
I loved the villa ephrussi but I would probably do Cannes instead if time is tight.
Nice is a great base for lots of different options.

One place I didn't like was Cannes. Just lots of flashy shops.
On the other hand, love Villefranche, Eze, Cap Ferrat, Monaco...
Great bus service from Prom des Anglais. Much easier than trains and so scenic.

Somanyquestionstoaskaboutthis · 26/02/2023 19:02

We went one Easter and it was much colder and wetter than the forecast said so be careful. We fell in love with Nice but hated Monaco. Eze was fantastic and Ventigmilla as pp said.
We found using Uber cheap and easy. We had an amazing driver to Eze who stopped at viewpoints and told us history in the original price.
The old town is gorgeous.

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 26/02/2023 19:02

Antibes is gorgeous.
Would highly recommend the Rothschild villa and the bus stops in front of it!

MissAmbrosia · 27/02/2023 11:10

Antibes is lovely and the beach at Juan Les Pins. Villefranche also. Monaco - meh!

MissAmbrosia · 27/02/2023 11:15

www.bellesrives.com/en/bars-restaurants/restaurants/belles-rives-beach/ Depends when you are travelling but I recommend lunch by the sea here, foot of Cap D'Antibes. This is the villa once rented by Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald back in the day. The grill restaurant at the Hotel Cap Eden Roc is quite something too but ££££ www.oetkercollection.com/hotels/hotel-du-cap-eden-roc/restaurants-bars/eden-roc-grill/

Menton is great. Short train journey. Any village in the hills behind Nice is amazing. Also the Chagall Museum. We actually stayed quite near the station a couple of blocks from the sea so had options for travel and hired a car. There’s so much to see I suggest you buy something like Lonely Planet and plan. 18 Michelin starred restaurants too!

MegCleary · 27/02/2023 11:56

Right, we are staying in the old town. Any restaurant tips there?

@MegCleary
Look at Michelin on line! The best are in it. Bib Gourmand is lower than starred but you cannot go wrong at that level either. Restaurant scene changes with upcoming chefs there. We like smaller non tourist places but menus won’t be in English!
