How to split 10 days between Munich, Vienna and Budapest

We're going interrailing with the kids in the summer, planning out the last section, and we need to decide how to divide up 10 nights between Munich, Vienna and Budapest (where we fly home from)

Any thoughts welcome.

Thanks

All great cities - personally, I would give Vienna slightly more time, but there's not much in it.
And will depend on timings of your transfers, too.

What do you like doing?

Vienna is very art gallery (plus cake). Much more variety of things to do in Munich and Budapest. OK more in Budapest but we found the Orban politics depressing and unavoidable even as a tourist.

Depends how old the kids are. Budapest has all the hot springs but puurheid not that much if you're not invested in the dark communist past. Vienna has a very good zoo and the Lipizzaners but the rest of the attractions quite adult (museums, galleries, music). Vienna is my favourite of the three. Munich to me is the least interesting as a city, but has a better range of activities for a range of ages and interests. So I'd do 2,3,3, and a day to get to the airport comfortably

2 nights Munich, 2 nights Salzburg/Zell am See (you've got to spend a day or two in the mountains if you're in Austria 😎) 2 nights Vienna and 2 nights Budapest - so you have two days left to play with if you find that somewhere has more to do than can be squeezed into 2 days.

I am reliably informed by DH that if you aren't into horses, the Lipizzaners are the dullest tourist attraction in the world.

Sorry DH Grin

We're inter-railing this summer too, and doing Munich for 2 nights, Salzburg 2 nights, Vienna 3 nights, Bratislava 1 night, Budapest 2 nights. I don't really know specifics of what we'll be doing in each yet, but it felt quite a good balance (advised would need 3 nights in Vienna as so much to see and do).

I found Vienna completely lacking in atmosphere, though enjoyed the Prater. I'd do 4 Munich, 2 Vienna and 4 Budapest. Or as mentioned by pp, maybe squeeze a couple of night in Tyrol in the middle. You can get direct train from Munich via Garmisch, Mittenwald and Seefeld to Innsbruck. Then onwards to Vienna. Bratislava is also lovely but not a huge amount to do.

Definitely spend more time in Budapest than Vienna.

There’s much more to do in Vienna than in Munich or Budapest and certainly there’s more to do than galleries and cake. Also very nice open air swimming pools at the old Danube (Krapfenwaldbach, Gänsehäufel, Arbeiterstrandbad — if you go to any of these places have lunch or dinner at the Strandcafe an der alten Donau) to have a lazy day in the middle of the trip. You can do the UN headquarters tour on the way to the pool if you want to have some sightseeing.
If you want to go to the wine villages go to Neustift am Walde rather than Grinzing.

Kids are 12 and 14.

Days of culture filled museums and galleries wouldn't be tolerated much 😂

I like this idea,
