What's a holiday that's like skiing...but not skiing?

Before kids we went skiing a couple of times. Tbh I am a little scared of heights and my knees aren't up to it anymore but I LOVED the format of the holiday:

  • being outside all day doing something active
  • learning new things and meeting new people
  • building up a good appetite to eat delicious food for dinner
  • glass of wine by the fire

What is a similar type of holiday? We now have kids who will be 5 and 8. Prefer to spend the holiday together but holiday club/lessons for a few days would be ok.

Bonus points for cheap and if we don't need to fly.

Thanks

Surf holiday. A couple of lessons of tuition then just hire boards. Youngest can just come in on their belly if it's too tough. Newquay?

Also paddle boarding. When we were in Saundersfoot there was a paddleboading hire just nearby and it looked lovely out there. You could check age suitability with the instructors.

How old are the kids?

Another vote for cross country skiing

Or

for a massive range of different activities at BB levels to suit everyone. The wellness centre is a delight, too.

Horse riding/grooming days

Llama trekking

Farm stay holiday where you can interact with some animals eg mucking out, grooming, egg collecting, exercising

Go to a ski resort in summer - loads of walking, summer toboggan, outdoor pools to swim in, great weather

And you can drive or train

We were the same and opted multiple times now for Morzine, excellent accomodations, check treeline chalets, reach4thealps, simply morzine. Ski grade chalets but cheaper as it's off season. Lift system is open in the summer so you can get up the mountains easily and walk predominantly peak to peak or downhill which is great with kids. The lift pass also gives you access to the pool and slides as well as the small village train. There are 2 lakes nearby with canoeing and a water assault course. Mountain biking for the brave! 8 hours from Calais.

Costs: relatively cheap as you can self cater, and the drive is easy. We stop at Dijon on the way out, do it in one go on way home. Kids have done this trip from age 3 upwards and loved it. They earn their ice cream, we earn a glass (or 3) of red.
