Tunisia, Turkey or Greek island

Looking for a holiday in Tunisia, Turkey or the Greek islands In May.
Obviously we would like everything to be perfect ... but the deal breaker would be the beach. We would like to be literally on the beach or over the road.
Other facilities like the pool, decent food, short transfers, all inclusive. Anyone got any ideas?

How is Tunisia as it looks beautiful, and cheap but is it safe/ warm etc

You'll get different responses about Tunisia. Seems a lot of people hate it. But I'll be there in May and it is a great time to be there. And I do get out and about in the country and have never really felt unsafe. I think some people may be uncomfortable because it is a different culture perhaps? The hotels have really good deals if you are looking at AI. Greece is also great in May - Crete especially as it's the best month for spring flowers in the mountains. Much of Greece is very dry and arid the rest of the year.

My friend has just returned from Turkey (it's a few years since I hae been) and said it has got very expensive.

The sea in Turkey and Greece won’t be particularly warm in May.

The massacres of tourists, especially the 2 attacks in 2015 probably didn't help either.

All helpful thank you.

We are sea swimmers so the warm (ish) sea is a selling point.

I did look at Fodele beach, the prices seem to be increasing everytime I blink( and yes I've cleared cookies)

And yet people flock to America and London…

I know that terrorism happens elsewhere, though some countries are more at risk than others but the attacks did affect tourism in Tunisia terribly. It had a very real impact with tour operators not offering holidays there for a few years after the events, and personally hardly blame holiday goers for being a tad troubled by the images of 38 people being massacred on a beach, and that's without considering the museum attack just 3 months before.

I went to Tunisia several years ago, pre-attacks. It was fine, nice hotel with good service, not much atmosphere in the resort (Port El Kantoui) but we went to Sousse a few times which was more lively/authentic, and it was certainly very handy for the beach.

I did find the juxtaposition of expensive hotels under construction with evidence of people living in absolute grinding poverty, almost small shanty towns, on the next plot really jarring and it made me feel guilty as I headed back to my air-conditioned hotel room each day. Also there was a lot of questionable animal welfare in the name of tourism; we avoided anything involving camel rides or horse drawn carriages as many of the animals looked thin, unkempt, lethargic and some had scarring from harsh bits or what looked like whip marks.

I’m glad I experienced it but I am in no rush to go back.

Thanks for the realistic view point.
It's something I did keep in mind , I do find it upsetting to see us 'tourists' shovelling too much food in, where the locals and even the staff would likely never afford such luxury.
However, Tourism is the life line sometimes and I do tend to tip, leave things for the staff.Suppose it's all about respect.

I'd love to go to Tunisia so maybe that's the one.

On the worst ever holidays thread Tunisa was the country that came up again and again.

I personally wouldn't go to Turkey either so out of your choices it would have to be the Greek islands.

PillBoxes · 24/02/2023 19:22

As a woman, muslim countries are not for me. That is just how I feel, the predominant male culture is not to my liking at all. In fact I really noticed it once in Turkey when going to Ephesus (great trip really) that there were absolutely NO front of house jobs done by women. Hotel reception, waiters, shops, taxi drivers, bus drivers, tour guides etc. I got the feeling that the women cleaned the toilets as a general rule.

Now I realise there are exceptions, and places like Turkey (the main cities) are optionally secular, but in the resorts not so.

So I don't go.

Itsonlyagame · 24/02/2023 19:28

Tunisia is marmite. I absolutely love it but many don't. I've been 4 times and would go back in a heartbeat if there was half a chance of getting ds on a plane. I like Turkey and Greek Islands too but Tunisia would probably be my first choice. I find the people very friendly, a small tip goes a very, very long way.

Vodababy · 25/02/2023 15:28

Greek islands can often be pebbly beaches rather than soft sand.

I'm going to Tunisia this year, can't wait it looks amazing!

Have been to Turkey quite a few times and always had a great time. To be it seems a safe/boring option.
