Best European city breaks gluten free

Hi! I would love to hear your recommendations for European city breaks that are good for catering for gluten free diets (I also don’t consume meat, but I like eggs and fish). Looking for lunch and dinner options. I will also be 27 weeks pregnant at the time of the holiday so it would be a bonus if the city centre isn’t too far from the airport! We only want to stay around 3 days.

Italy is good as they are very clued up on coeliac disease.

AnnaMagnani · 23/02/2023 18:48

Rome. Very clued up on coeliac and allergies of all kinds.

Never seen such comprehensive allergy labelling or so many places advertising gluten free pasta.

Rosieumbrella · 24/02/2023 07:07

I am in Rome at the moment and mentioned to DH yesterday how many restaurants had signs outside saying they did gluten free pasta and pizza. Breakfast might be more difficult - mostly pastries! Our hotel breakfast buffet includes fruit and yoghurt though, as well as boiled and scrambled eggs, meats and cheeses which would work for you I think.

JingsMahBucket · 24/02/2023 07:13

Yup, I was also going to mention Italy as well. Spain may also be another option because a lot of their food doesn’t necessarily involve pasta or wheat, rather rather rice. Greece possibly too. Anywhere where the focus of diet is actually meat and vegetables, so the Mediterranean :)

Literally anywhere in Italy!

MissSmiley · 24/02/2023 07:16

Definitely Italy but Barcelona is supposed to be the gluten free capital of Europe, I can't wait to go ... I follow "the gluten free suitcase" on instagram

journeyofinsanity · 24/02/2023 07:27

Another vote for Italy. My experience in Rome, Venice, Naples and Florence make me think it's a nation wide awareness. Not sure about small provincial villages.

BeanCounterBabe · 24/02/2023 07:47

Another vote for Italy. We had a week in Garda there with my 12 year who is a fussy eater who can’t eat gluten. Loads of restaurants have gluten free pizza, pasta, or risotto even in smaller places.
Supermarkets had lots of snacks as well.

Twilightstarbright · 24/02/2023 07:49

Italy or Spain are very aware. France far less so.

cocksstrideintheevening · 24/02/2023 07:50

Spain - my coeliac friend Alice it because the get McDonald's

ninjafoodienovice · 24/02/2023 07:54

Italy is v good for gluten free, definitely don't go to France - it's a nightmare plus they look at you as if you have two heads.

guzzywuzzy · 24/02/2023 08:02

Italy and Spain...was in Rome a few years back and it was amazing. Literally any city in Italy will work. Unfortunately agree with PP re France. Nothing marked on the majority of menus. I'm a fluent French speaker and still managed to get glutened a couple of times whilst there last year 😞

SweetSakura · 24/02/2023 08:12

Not gluten but similar experience to @guzzywuzzy I went to France the other week and was stunned by the incredulous expressions when I tried to ask about allergens (not fluent but competent french speaker).

PregnantQuestions · 24/02/2023 08:14

Wow! So it seems Italy (particularly Rome) is a winner! Any recommendations for lunch and dinner in Rome?

This blog is usually good for recommendations, here's the Rome one:

Also join the 'Coeliacs Eat Out Abroad' group on Facebook.

My personal recommendation is Budapest - it's a beautiful and interesting city, friendly people, much more reasonably priced than most European capitals, and there are a surprising number of 100% GF bakeries/cafes/restaurants - we actually felt like we had a choice when we went there rather than grateful for anything!

ImissLemmings · 24/02/2023 08:40

Definitely Italy. They really care about food over there so they get the whole gouten thing.

We were in Venice and everywhere could do gluten free.

Hopeislost · 24/02/2023 12:16

My favourites in Rome were Pizza in Trevi (near the Trevi fountain) and Pantha Rei (near the Pantheon). Both had delicious gluten free pizzas, a good selection of gluten free beers, very friendly staff and good safety measures.

MrsBigTed · 24/02/2023 12:23

Brussles is also pretty good, not everywhere is GF but quite easy to find out where / where not to go
