Travel insurance - hernia

We've recently found out that DH has a hernia in his groin, and the waiting list for a first hospital appointment (never mind surgery!) is over a year. I've just got round to looking at travel insurance (for me, DH and DS(3)) for our two holidays this year (booked before we found out) and nobody will give me a quote online. I'm going to have to call a specialist company and I assume be charged a lot!

So in the meantime, does anyone...

  1. Have any suggestions for specialist companies?
  2. Have an idea of how much it would cost for single trip (1 x 6 days; 1 x 2 weeks) or and/or annual?
  3. Know if it might work out cheaper to insure me and DS separately and DH by himself? Not sure if this is even possible!

Any advice would be gratefully received!

That seems ridiculous. An inguinal hernia isn't life threatening. Call these companies. You don't need a specialist one. Whilst I hope your DH gets treated more quickly than a year, it's one of the 4 most common ops in the UK (hernia, cataracts, varicose veins and hips). Also, hernias are hot topics right now for fast track and waiting list initiatives. What part of the country are you in?

I have a history of cancer, and in the 5-7 years after I was treated, my insurance was always ridiculously high. So I simply removed cover for it. The risk was that should something happen that was related or connected to it, I wouldn’t have been covered, but it ended up making my insurance cheaper than someone with no conditions at all.

Is that an option, or is there a risk this hernia could cause problems when abroad?

I'm in the middle of arranging insurance for my DH's medical condition. Our annual travel insurance won't cover it and suggested I find one of the specialist companies to quote for cover specifically just for that.
I think I'm going to go with a company called Paying Too Much who've given me a more reasonable qoite than others I've tried.
It can be difficult though if you're waiting for appointments or treatment. The companies may be able to suggest a way round this.
I wouldn't want to go abroad without medical cover. If it's Europe the whatsit card might cover it. Hernias can go nasty occasionally.

Staysure is great. I've used them for two people with lots of preexisting conditions.

I had this last year and ended up declaring it but excluded from my policy. I did take it extremely easy while we were away - no lifting bags etc. I was so worried I’d make it worse and need treatment!

Thanks for the replies. I'll look into the companies mentioned. We're in Greater Manchester and it seems highly unlike that the hernia would cause any issues while we're away. Didn't realise we could remove the condition from the insurance... something to consider; would it be covered by the GHIC if it came to it? Makes me feel a bit on edge not having cover though...
