Trunki too big to be used as hand luggage?!

Has anyone flown with BA recently and used a Trunki? I’m really confused, their website promotes the BA branded trunki as a perfect hand luggage for kiddies and yet their hand luggage requirement size make it too big to use one!

I talked to them on live chat today but was told by an advisor, in broken English, that after chatting to his colleagues they will allow Trunki on board but it must be the BA branded one.

I know they are too big to be hand luggage on Ryanair etc but BA selling a branded one and then saying it’s too big is insane.

dementedpixie · 22/02/2023 08:01

Is the BA one slightly smaller?
We tend to use backpacks as hand luggage as they are easier to put under the seat in front as they have a soft outer shell whereas a trunki has a hard exterior

BAs hand luggage size is 56x45x25

The trunk is 45x20.5x31

It's perfectly within the size limit.

They are very flexible about bags anyway in BA. People bring on massive cabin bags. My DH travels with them almost exclusively and his carry on bag is huge.

ApolloandDaphne · 22/02/2023 08:06

I can see from the measurements you think it is too deep but I am pretty sure they won't look twice at it.

So turn it on its side??

Do you mean too big as an underseat bag? While it’s a little over the dimensions, it fits under the seat. The measuring devices that I’ve seen are all for the overhead locker. I‘m not sure how they would prove they are too big without a tape measure.

They have cages at the gate to see if they fit in is how.

I know Easyjet have a specific statemtn on their website that says standard size Trunkis are allowed as a child's free hand luggage. They easily fit under a seat so I can't see how it's a problem with BA.

WeCome1 · 22/02/2023 08:13

Have you looked up both measurements, they look ok to me?

WhatsitWiggle · 22/02/2023 08:14

Thos is your hand luggage allowance on BA:

1 handbag/laptop bag (max. 23kg / 51lb and up to 40 x 30 x 15cm / 16 x 12 x 6in)
plus
1 additional cabin bag (max. 23kg / 51lb and up to 56 x 45 x 25cm / 22 x 18 x 10in)

It's oversize as the handbag (under seat) but fine as cabin (overhead).

Is the issue that you want to be travelling with cabin suitcases for all people PLUS the trunki?

WeCome1 · 22/02/2023 08:15

I’m seeing ba allowance
56 x 45 x 25cm

trunki size
46 x 20.5 x 31 cm

so well under.

We have taken ours loads. It fits up top width ways but not facing in

They have them for the overhead lockers, as I said, but I have yet to see any for the underseat bag size.

More important, why a Trunki? Pretty much everyone I know who has had one, including me, has rued the day they got them. Heavy, inflexible, and kids get bored of them very quickly indeed. A backpack is way better.

Yup this. Don’t waste your money and go for a back pack DC can carry themselves. But if you really insist then the Trunki fits fine in the overhead locker.

LiverpoolMummy89 · 22/02/2023 10:10

Thank you to everyone that replied, I rechecked again and it will fit. I’m sorry, I’m sleep deprived dealing with a teething baby who has a conjunctivitis so she’s extra grumpy! The trip planning is stressing me out!

To give some balance, my son absolutely loves his and its been one of our best purchases. We got a second hand one though cause I had also heard lots of negatives about them and I didn't want to waste money.
He has used it for flights and also trips to visit his grandparents. We unpack it then he uses it to play with at their house.
We will get a second one for my daughter when she is a little older.

Just be aware that the airline can refuse you to have your hand luggage on with you and a trunki might cause problems. I flew in December with my dc and was asked to put my hand luggage in the hold. When I refused the check in desk threatened to hold my passports until I agreed.

That was on a BA flight and my dh is in their membership scheme (or whatever it is) through work. We'd also flown business class on the way out and fly regularly with them but this was in economy on way back. I thought they'd be more lenient knowing we fly so regularly with them. Just a tip tbh as with dc I really need my hand luggage!

They ask for luggage checked only from group 4 onwards usually and so you cant be that regular a flyer or you would have BA status of some kind and be in groups 1-3?

solish · 23/02/2023 01:04

We were absolutely in Group 1-3 I ended up walking away from the desk and saying keep the passports then. And they gave me back the passports and let me keep my hand luggage.

I love Trunki ra, but I don’t use them for travel abroad, I find them way too clunky and heavy and difficult to carry. They don’t travel well being pulled along either and don’t carry much , plus everything spills out when you open it
I save it for domestic trips only
