Does anyone have any good tips for places to go in/around KL with teens? We have 3 full days (4 nights but flying in late on first night and leaving early on the last morning) there as a stopover on a longer post-GCSE trip (teens age 16 and 14). We've been a couple of times before so don't feel the need to pack in all of the tourist sites, though the last time we went they were pre-schoolers so can't remember it well.

If anyone has any good tips in or around KL that would be great thanks.

Thanks v much for the suggestions. Do you think 3 days is too much? I am wondering about day trips/overnight to somewhere like Melaca

The aquarium is amazing. Don't to do the rotating restaurant.

The Batu caves are interesting.

Malacca is great for a day or two! Pretty and a fun market on Jonker Street. Otherwise I'd be tempted to pop up to Langkawi or Penang if you don't mind another short flight? Depends on if you're doing beachy stuff on the rest of your trip though.

In KL, some of our favourite days out have been the bird park in the botanical gardens, virtual reality in midvalley megamall and street food on Jalan Alor.

The Batu caves are interesting.

Yes it's the one place DD remembers from when she went as a pre-schooler and she's desperate to go back!

There’s Sunway Lagoon - massive waterpark and zoo. Not exactly an authentic Malaysian experience but might be fun!

Thanks v much for the great suggestions. I thought we had too much time there but perhaps it's now too little!
DH is v. keen on spending some of the time in Taman Negara but I am not sure we can fit that in too.

Don't stop in KL, fly through to Penang.
So much to do there with kids, especially Escape waterpark, world-class. Great food, interesting Chinese heritage mansions, Street art, cool and quirky shops. Nice beaches although you can't swim there, but you can't swim in Melakka or KL beaches either to be honest.
KL is great but to be honest not really for kids, lots of malls and great restaurants though.

If you want great beaches skip Penang and go to Langkawi. Both are short flight from KL.

Ali85 · 19/02/2023 21:46

I feel awful about the amount of flying we are doing on this trip already so I think Penang and Langkawi are probably out for this trip unfortunately.

Sounds like you'd enjoy some nature/rainforest-type stuff! You can hire a car or (if you don't want to self-drive amongst crazy Malaysian traffic) book a driver.

If you fancy visiting the highlands for a cool(er) climate:

🌱The stunning tea plantations (Boh) at Cameron Highlands. Also the moss forest. Doable in a day-trip but there are also hotels up there.
🌱A bit closer to KL is Fraser's Hill. Lovely colonial atmosphere where all the English people built their weekend bungalows, and fascinating misty rainforests.
🌱Even closer is Genting Highlands, this is like Vegas plus Alton Towers rolled into one. But there are some nature bits too.

If you fancy a bit of glamping-type rainforest stuff, there are now loads of really cool-looking places within a short drive of KL. Last July we went here for two nights and highly recommend it to everyone we know (the whole experience was a wonderufl getaway and the catering was amazing) Grin It's also kind of "on the way" to Fraser's Hill if you want to combine it.

Islamic art museum was really interesting.

Jalan Alor was fab too. Are some amazing food there.

We enjoyed the bird park as well.

We did a bus tour of the city which was fun as well.

Breakfast at the shangri la is an experience as well. I've never seen a breakfast buffet like it.
