Biarritz camping for tweens/teens

Is Biarritz nice? Looking at yelloh campsite. Thought we could fly to the Biarritz airport and then manage without a car? I am not that well travelled in France. Looking for a warm camping holiday with the kids as that seems to be what they want to do.

Depends where, I'd want a car personally and we always drive to France but we like a road trip.

Yopy · 14/02/2023 18:41

thanks for reply. We are coming from north of Scotland so driving and ferry is very long for us.

Yelloh camping is usually very nice sites, I've been to a few.

Just check carefully what's included re bedding and towels, sometimes you need to pay extra.

I've only been to Biarritz for the day, I loved it, but can't comment on getting round without a car.

Thanks. Other option I am looking at in the yelloh village in bordeaux

We had 5 days in Biarritz and really liked it - lots of beaches to go on, food was lovely

BiddyPop · 14/02/2023 20:27

We have come into Biarritz airport a few times - stayed in an apartment twice and camping the 3rd. Just rented a car at the airport.

With a car, San Sebastián and Bilbao are within easy reach for day trip, which both may interest teens/tweens.

Yopy · 14/02/2023 20:35

Thanks great tips

The beach at Biarritz has brilliant waves - great for teens (windsurfing or just jumping in the waves).

Vitriolinsanity · 14/02/2023 20:39

It is fabulous! I absolutely love it.

Yopy · 14/02/2023 20:41

Does it tend to be windy ? I once went to Cadiz and was put off it by the fact it was so windy

We’ve stayed at Yelloh Village in Biarritz, was a lovely site, don’t remember it being windy. The waves were good, very big and strong, the sort if you get caught by one, you end up being dumped on the beach, beaches have lifeguards and they are needed. No need for a car, there’s a bus service, trains can take you to Spain, San Sebastián is worth a visit, it was a good holiday, we had great weather in August, not too hot.

Central biarritz is walking, how far is the site from town?

BiddyPop · 15/02/2023 08:05

We had stayed in St Jean de Luz to south in Sept and it was nice, only 1 windy day impacting the beach in 2 separate holidays.

We had also stayed on a lake near Soustons, a town inland kinda north east of Biarritz. A UK sailing school had separate camping on site so Dd did a lot of sailing and I did a bit, Dh rented a bike and did a lot of cycling locally.

Bayonne is a nice town to visit, also a bit north of Biarritz. Great surfing in and near Biarritz itself. And a nice town for food and shops etc. (So was SJdL but smaller - but lovely square on the harbour side).

We also went into the mountains where there is a funicular railway to bring you up (can't remember the name just now) but Dd was too small to do big hikes - but that also looked lovely.

In all trips, it's not that we used the car loads as we did a lot of walking and cycling, but it was useful for day trips, French supermarkets and fhe odd day with tired legs.

QuentininQuarantino · 15/02/2023 15:44

The mountain with the scenic train is called Larrun/La Rhune (Basque/French) and is lovely. You can take the train up and hike back down, or do the train both ways. Take a picnic as the restaurant at the top is rubbish and expensive. At the top you straddle france and Spain! There are also the Grottes de Sare (caves) nearby there and a little zoo. I agree about renting a car.

Another mountain worth visiting is the Peñas de Aia, which has an old Roman mine you can go inside and you can walk around it and find your own sparkly stones.

San Sebastian/Donostia is a lovely day trip, as is Hondarribia/Fuenterribia (everything is in two languages!!) The next fishing village down from San Sebastian is Getaria and is where Balenciaga was born and has an amazing museum if you have DC into fashion.

There is a great small stately home build by an eccentric Scottish astronomer which you might enjoy, called Chateau dÁbbardie - its lovely and quirky.

Guethary is a beautiful tiny little town on that coast closer to Biarritz.

Just wanted to say Yelloh are pretty good campsites

knottsberryfarm · 16/02/2023 18:47

What campsite were you looking at?Received an email from Yelloh this morning they have a new campsite called Berrua in that area. It looks nice.

Has anyone stayed at the ibiarritz one? It's much bigger but closer to town.

Moonlightsonatas · 16/02/2023 18:49

The airport is very close to Biarritz so you can easily get a taxi too. The weather is usually good in summer but I’ve been in July before and it’s rained non-stop!

been and done it. · 16/02/2023 20:37

Biarritz is awesome gorgeous and bloody brilliant. Hope you enjoy.

Mandasporian · 01/03/2023 21:43

I have stayed in the Ilbarritz campsite twice. Both times with a teen and a younger child. I don't think you'd even need a car. There's a huge supermarket next to it and a surf beach with life guards across the road. Local buses in and around Biarritz were free and we also took a bus to St Jean de Luz. The reception were super helpful.
You can walk along the coast into Biarritz easily. We rented bikes too. I've stayed in lots of Yelloh sites and they were all great, but I think this was my favourite.

Smcm77 · 19/11/2023 09:33

Hi.. we are looking at Ilbarritz for next July and wondered about the need for air conditioning? We have a 13 and 11 year old. Most accommodation seem not to have air con but would be nervous in July without it. What would you recommend?

Many thanks ☺️
