Lanzarote with 10mo - do we need a car?

As the topic, we’re going to Lanzarote when our baby is 10 months old for a last holiday before I return to work. Will we need to hire a car? We’ve never been to any of the Canary Islands with or without kids so don’t know anything 😅 is it possible to get a good experience without a car? We’re staying in Costa Teguise but I’d definitely like to visit the national park and a vineyard.

When we went to Costa Teguise, there was a tour where they took us to the National Oark, camel riding and some fabulous vineyard. The wine is only sold on the Canaries but I loved it!

You should be ok without a car. Its a small island and the bus service is good.

Lots to do in ST as well.

Sorry - CT

We went to Costa Teguise last month only for 4 days we went to the beach , stayed at the hotel and went to the water park so didn't hire a car I suppose it depends what you want to do . I noticed the car hire was quite cheap at the airport thou.

I’ve been going out to Lanzarote since I was little and we go a couple of times a year since our eldest was weeks old! it’s just lovely.

So much more to it than meets the eye… car hire is really reasonable- try Autoreisen - so even if you only have one for a couple of days to explore I think it’s worth it. Plus by the time you add in airport transfers etc….

There are trips you can book to Timanfaya and La Geria (the wine region) but with a little one I always prefer the flexibility of being independent. If you’re going up the volcano go early in the day - queuing can be horrendous!

There are lovely little villages and beaches as you head north too… Arrieta (little beach bar and playground next to the beach), Caleton Blanco on a sunny day is just stunning, as is Famara. There is a big playground in the old capital of Teguise where I have spent many hours, not too far from Costa Teguise - if you head up there try the food at Cantina! Loads of little tapas bars too when you’re out exploring who are usually fab with kids.

Costa Teguise is very much a tourist resort (my family used to have a restaurant there!) but has a gorgeous beach and some lovely restaurants. If you’re on the road head down to Playa Blanca to check out for a future visit! Also touristy just a bit more spread out and a little more authentic in parts.

we do go other places too, but it’s definitely a special place for us! can’t wait to be back soon, have fun!

I realised my post sounded a bit sniffy about tourist resorts- didn’t mean that all all. CT is perfect for a young family, as is PB!

Yes, Lanzarote probably is manageable without a car, even if you want to do trips (lots of excursions from the large tourist areas), but I’m not sure I’d want to be on and off coaches and keeping to a timetable with a 10 month old! It’ll be so much more relaxed if you can go at your own (your baby’s!) pace and have the car to retreat to if needs be. Would definitely recommend hiring one. Love Lanzarote, hope you have a wonderful holiday!

Thanks everyone! We’ve already booked airport transfers sadly, did at the same time as booking the holiday, but I’ll look at car hires and I don’t think the transfers were expensive so not a huge loss if we don’t use it. I doubt Jet2 will offer a refund 😅

We went to lanzarote earlier this year , we stayed in Matagorda though ,
Jet2 were really good !

We didn’t need a car , very easy to walk around ( I know it’s a different resort , but judging by the amount of elderly people in wheelchairs or mobility scooters I would imagine that most resorts would be easy to walk / pushchair around )

We did an excursion to the volcano in the National park , and it seemed that the coach tours took priority , as there was a long line of cars waiting to get into the car park , and I think you have to go by coach through the lava park with the special commentary
The trip took us to a vineyard , a village for a Canarian lunch , (. The villagers built a little church after staying up all night to pray that the lava would stop before it took the village )
Camel riding was available , if you chose to do so , we just looked round the camel museum

Just back from Lanzarote where I have been many times.
I have hired a car in the past but car hire has become very expensive recently.
There are excellent bus services. They are clean, frequent and cheap.
You are at the opposite end to the volcano park (though it's not a huge island) and for that I would recommend an organised trip.

Has anyone used an private airport transfer service in Lanzorote that they would recommend that provides a car seat?

Thanks in advance.
