Washington DC with teens - is it fun?

I've got the chance of a v cheap holiday to Washington DC through work with my teen DC and am wondering if it's worth it. I'd have to pay for two flights, and food and drink over there.

I've never been - is it fun and worth crossing the Atlantic for? All opinions very welcome!

We went for a bout 3 days in august last year with a 10 and 8 year old- was a lovely city to explore.

It's a fantastic city for teens who are interested in history, great museums, monuments, and food.

I highly recommend the US Holocaust museum. You'll have to book tickets in advance and get there at your time slot. It's a really sobering experience. The exhibits are gut wrenching.

Also the National Museum of African American History and Culture - free admission but you have to book a time slot amd get there on time.

The Marjorie Merriweather Post museum/ Hillwood Estate equires an entry fee. Well worth a visit. We took an Uber there as it's away from the hustle and bustle.

The National Arboretum is lovely. Takes about an hour to do a loop. The nearby Ivy City neighbourhood has an axe throwing restaurant that might appeal to your teens. It's called Kick Axe Somethingorother.. Call ahead if interested to see age restrictions for the axe throwing, whether closed for an event, etc.

The British Embassy hasn’t arranged entry to the White House for years.

I think the best museum for teens is the National Museum of American History. It’s a fascinating walk through of everything American. From transport to military campaigns, to black history, presidents and Hollywood. It’s all there and unmissable. The other must see is the National Air and Space museum. It’s utterly fascinating and worth spending time there.

Capitol Hill and the White House are a must. We found Arlington Cemetery well worth a visit but teens might not. If you have ever wanted to see an Oscar statue, you can see all 4 of Katharine Hepburn’s at the National Portrait gallery in front of her portrait. I’ve always remembered seeing them!

Georgetown is a great area to stay and is the older part of Washington. All the other suggestions are well worth doing. The war memorials are stunning too, especially the Korean one and the Lincoln memorial is iconic.

Yes! It’s also quite compact, safe and has the electric scooters everywhere. I’ve been with my teens many times (I live in the US) and I just let them go explore by themselves.

I loved Washington! The museums are amazing especially the air and apace one (forget the exact name) and Arlington Cemetry is huuuge very intense.

And is a short train ride to New York, go see a show and do Staue of Liberty and Times Square etc

But depends what your teens are interested in 🤷‍♀️

I would avoid Times Square! If you go to NY, plan your day. The Statue of Liberty is a long way from Central Park for example. It will also be colder than Washington. Personally I would go to Mount Vernon or get out to the Skyline Drive.
