Cabin bag for 5 days in NY

We are going to NY in October. Hoping to do all the usual sight seeing things plus a visit to broadway, nice restaurants etc.

Have found 2 suitable flights. One with only a cabin bag allowed and one with normal baggage.

Would a cabin bag be enough so you think? I've never just used a cabin bag and have no idea if it will hold enough or even what type of clothing I may need for ny in October.

I wear mostly casual but happy to dress up a bit for nights.

Which baggage allowance would you go for?

I think it’s doable. Especially when it’s colder as you’re more likely to re-wear clothes than you would in the summer when you want to wash everything after each wear.

If it’s five days, that’s one outfit on the plane, plus three days there, and then rewear the travel outfit.

I’d plan on having two pairs jeans/trousers, two jumpers, one dressier top, one coat. I’d maybe take trainers for the day and have some boots to wear for the evenings, but wear the boots on the flight and pack the trainers as they’re lighter/smaller.

If you wear your heaviest / bulkiest clothes and make full use of the handbag dimensions (eg Amazon does a hand luggage sized travel bag), then you could make it work. But I travel light anyways.

Yrs, you definitely can. Roll your clothes, use a vac bag to save space in bag, put things like knickers and socks in shoes.

Ha e a great time.

I’ve managed a 5 day work trip + travel either side to the US with a cabin bag, and found it very doable.

Your handbag needs to contain phone, charger, money, passport, snacks. Download books to read if that’s your thing on a long flight. Also your cosmetics - small roll-on deodorant, lip gloss, foundation, mascara. Your handbag also needs to be whatever bag you’ll use in the daytime. In the evenings hopefully you can get away with just phone and wallet in your jacket pocket.

Travel in good trainers or boots, a good sweater, and whatever jacket you’d like to have for evening wear, ideally to double as daywear on dry days. On the flight try to unlayer and ask for a cabin blanket if you’re chilly — this way your travel clothes won’t get too rumpled or sweaty. Wear a vest top under your clothes - this can double as PJs when you are in NY, so you can lounge round your hotel room in vest and knickers (which you can rinse and dry in your accommodation for freshness).

Then pack

  • One spare pair of footwear - stuff as many knickers and socks inside as you can to save space
  • One spare bra, not underwired.
  • small waterproof jacket
  • fill the rest of the space as you please

it is surprisingly liberating not taking loads of luggage!

Definitely doable. I only ever take a cabin bag for up to 2 weeks plan effectively. Noone dresses up in new York. You need jeans and jeans and flat boots

ZenNudist · 02/02/2023 08:21

Yes went for 8 days in October with jetblue sized small cabin bag. I am a consummate over packer!

Too expensive to buy anything there but I got 2 pairs of trainers that we managed to squeeze in.

It was hot! Take layers. Definitely need long sleeved t shirts / shirts or light tops.

I took
Blue chunky jeans
Black skinny jeans
Black leggings
2 pairs at least of thick black tights
Long floral dress
Chunky brown boots
Grey suede Chelsea boots
Leopard print pop over loose shirty top thing
Sparkly tunic type short dress
Long sleeve top x2
Jumper (didn't use)
Long puffs type coat (too hot)
Gloves
Hat
Scarf
Short-sleeved t shirts x2
Socks and undies
Small toiletries)didn't use because hotel)
Bought 2x trainers because shoes became painful and they were good price in Macys.

You can do it, sure. I don't like shopping and could easily do 5 days from a cabin bag.

But do you want to? Do you plan to go shopping in NYC? (I know a lot of people for whom this is a highlight of their trip.) This is your holiday - not a cheap one, either. The price difference may be justified. Depends what makes you happy!

PandasAreUseless · 02/02/2023 08:47

You need to wear most of your clothes on the plane. So - your jeans, a long sleeved tshirt, a nice sweater over the top, and your jacket, and your jewellry (or whatever clothes you would choose). I even wear my sunglasses on my head.
Then you can pack 2 spare tops and 1 flat pair of smart shoes (the heel on a pair of heels takes up too much space!) Then a small bag of only essential makeup, and miniature toiletries with foldable hairbrush. And this is a time for facewipes I'm afraid.
I found I wished I hadn't wasted space on a book last time I did a city break like this, as you're not in your accommodation enough to read it.
The best thing about this type of packing is, when you have to vacate your accommodation on the final day, you're not traipsing around a city with heavy luggage.

ZenNudist · 02/02/2023 09:03

I've remembered I did wear my jumper with my scarf instead of my coat quite a few days. Next time i go in October I may skip the big coat.

I also remember I wore a pair of smart joggers, sweatshirt and t-shirt on the plane. To go with my packing list. It seems like loads to cram in but I used a packing cube.

Hand luggage definitely the way forward for city breaks.

Brilliant! Cabin bag it is. Thanks all

its definately do able, just remember the liquids restrictions by doing hand luggage only - buy in NYC or at the airport once past security if needed

Krakenes · 02/02/2023 20:44

Definitely cabin bag! The three of us (2 adults and one baby) did a week in NY with a cabin bag. Makes it so much easier in the flight.

treelined76 · 02/02/2023 20:45

Yes I think it's doable but if you're a shopper then bare that in mind...you might not have any room for purchases on the way back!

Arrrrrrragghhh · 02/02/2023 22:53

Cabin bag. I totally recommend this one 44 litres and fits under seat
Had mine years and carries loads. The pockets are really good sizes and means you don’t need to root through the whole bag to get odd bits.

NashvilleQueen · 02/02/2023 23:03

I think I'd struggle. But I think it depends if you're doing anything nice at night that might require some days to have two outfits.

Arrrrrrragghhh · 02/02/2023 23:13

Just take the nicest versions of clothes you have because they look better when you’re there.
Also I love jeans but tend to take a leather/ PVC / coated jean because of their wipe down ability. Easy to dress up or down too.
Also cheap velvet doesn’t crumple. I took a stretchy jumpsuit short sleeve away with me and it looked amazing on despite being squished into a ball for a day! Really good for a night out and didn’t require any other items except jewellery.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/02/2023 07:32

It's definitely possible, and it varies from person to person as to how restrictive it feels. But cabin baggage varies quite a lot in what weight and size you're allowed (anything from 5 to 23 kilos), so it obviously depends on the actual allowance.

You could always share things like toiletries, hair straighteners or chargers to save weight/space. Don't forget that you'll have to comply with the liquid restrictions so won't be able to bring back anything larger than 100 ml you buy while there.

But it won't be a case that hold luggage is 'not allowed', it just means that you have to pay extra if you want it. If you do end up shopping, you could always pay for more luggage on the way back. Again, you could probably share with your travelling companion.
