Recommendations for (child free) City break in April?

DH and I have the opportunity to go away for 5 days in April without DC. We would have about 5 days, including travel. Has anyone got any recommendations for a city break or other holiday (not beach) in that time? It is a very rare occurence that we get this opportunity so want to make the most of it.

What's your budget?
We did a five night cruise as a couple which was very novel and something we would never do with children.

Not enough information. If it’s early April you could still manage to ski in some places, that is a brilliant holiday to do without kids, but no use if you are not a skier.

Are you foodies? If so, look at San Sebastián.

Where have you already been- do you have any “classics” still to tick off- Prague, Berlin, Budapest, Paris, Rome, New York.

Do you like a particular type of music or art? If yes, build it round a concert or exhibition that you’d like to see.

Are you fit? Then try a cycling holiday in France or walking in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. Like amazing landscapes? Norway or Iceland. History? Vilnius or Athens

I saw a programme about Salzburg the other day, it’s lovely. But maybe Istanbul is more your style.

Seville or Munich would be my choices.

What a treat. What do you love, where have you been and enjoyed?

If you're going abroad I'd start by checking where you can fly from locally. You don't want to be driving hours after a short break. Or Eurostar or ferries depending on where you live.

Have you got any bucket list tick offs like The Acropolis or Pompeii that you could build a break around? Or what about a region where you could do a couple of stops?

Northern Spain has loads to do. Bilbao is great for culture and you've got San Sebastian for amazing food within reach.

April would be glorious in Crete. Loads to see historically and one of the few islands that will be functioning that early.

Mallorca is easy and cheap to get too. Palma in its own right is lovely. Like a more compact Barcelona. Hire a car and explore the mountains and northern coast. The scenery around Deia will blow your mind.

Thank you for your messages so far. We will be going early April and would love somewhere a bit warmer and not rainy.

So, we have been to in Europe - most of France, Netherlands, some parts of Germany, Ireland, Barcelona, Valencia, Lisbon, Rome, Sardinia, Copenhagen, Salzburg, Innsbruck. We have been further afield to places worldwide also, but probably not worth mentioning those as we won't have time to go much further than Europe.

We aren't skiers either.

@Catnary what programme did you see? We're off to Salzburg in the summer.

Travel Man with Joe Lycett and Roisín Conaty. A bit silly but gave a good sense of the city.

Marrakesh or Istanbul would be my recommendation.

Seville or Granada. If travelling over Easter time they have some amazing Semana Santa processions.
