what kind of Spanish do they speak in Mallorca?

Sorry if that's a daft question, but want to go to Spain in the summer to help DS with his Spanish. Am opening another thread on Spain itself, but haven't been to Mallorca for years and just wondered whether the language there is too far removed from Spanish for it to serve the required purpose. Feel really thick asking that question!

They speak Mallorquian.

tiredemma · 06/02/2008 21:39

Its a bit like catalan, but really is a language of its own. Sorry its Mallorquin- without an a.

Gingerbear · 06/02/2008 21:40

It is a bit like Catalan - like in Barcelona.

WendyWeber · 06/02/2008 21:41

You need MemysonandI - she knows all about Mallorcan.(Or Mallorquin, sorry, emma )

Gingerbear · 06/02/2008 21:42

oops, X posted with Emma!
He will still be able to speak Spanish proper though, as many of the summer workers come over for the season from mainland Spain, plus, Mallorcans can speak Spanish (Castellano IIRC)

ladette · 06/02/2008 21:45

thanks.... so do you think it would be ok or are we better sticking with mainland Spain away from the Catalan speaking areas?

I spoke 'normal' spanish when I lived in Mallorca. Tbh- the only differences I ever really noticed was 'gracies' instead of 'gracias' and 'bon dia' instead of 'buenos dias'

I cant say I ever came across any other major differences.

ladette · 06/02/2008 22:02

thanks tiredemma. Is that true throughout Mallorca?

Yes, I would say so.

Whereabouts on the island do you plan on staying?
I lived in the North and the south of the island.

ladette · 06/02/2008 22:09

Not sure yet, we were thinking of mainland spain but I'd love to go to Mallorca again hence wondering about the language, since that's one of the main reasons for Spain this year

I have just seen this, so probably irrelevant to post about it now but I would like to point out a few things.

Mallorquin is a variant from Catalan, the main differences are the pronouns, and a few words, other than that is Catalan (actually, most Mallorcans would say they speak Catalan, although there is a very vocal very nationalistic segment in society who claim mallorquin is a language in itself). And no, if the only difference you have appreciated is Gracies they were speaking to you in Castellano!

Don't forget that most adults were brought up in the last years of Franco dicatatorship which means they speak Spanish (castellano ) perfectly but some resent to be forced to speak other language than their own (no surprise about it to be honest particularly when they were punished for speaking it in times gone by).

The only thing that I think would be confusing about learning Spanish in one of the "Catalan Countries" is the speed at which languages are changed during the conversation: When two persons meet for the first time, the language they speak on that ocassion is set as the language to speak when meeting again, which means that you can have a table with 3 persons where every person is using both languages when adressing the other two.

Ahhh, and as everybody speaks both languages, and they switch between them so easily, they are prone to forget that someone in the group may not be able to understand one or any of them. And to be honest... I don't blame them!

MeMySonAndI · 20/02/2008 22:57

Another downside of going to Mallorca is that a great number of people are very profficient in English and German too so... even when you may want to practice they may answer in English anyway, to "save" you the trouble or to practice their English with you!

MeMySonAndI - your post brings back memories. I have a holiday flat in Mallorca and so have a few friends over there.

Even though I can do conversational spanish I still can hardly get a word in with their children at the dinner table.

Apparently they speak English at home, Spanish in the classroom and Catalan in the playground!!

Ladette - I agree with MMSAI about how they will try and be polite by replying in English if they think your DS is having difficulty especially in tourist resorts where most speak English the whole time they are at work.

Thanks all. Should have updated post - sorry - to say we have booked to go to mainland Spain. But useful input for next year perhaps. Thanks,
