We are planning a trip to Japan for 14 days in October. My DH, DD (12) and DS (9).
We are flying in and out of Tokyo. Any recommendations for places to go, hotels to stay at etc?

Following!

We did a similar-length trip when one of us had to be there for work/conferences, but with much younger kids. Did a 3-centre trip (Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo) in the summer, which is very very humid. October a much better idea! Following for nostalgia, as my info is 12 years out of date!

I’m so excited. We have got a bit of money to do this trip so it’s really a once in a lifetime thing.

If you do go to Osaka, this was absolutely magical (for all ages!)

I am following this too as I would like to go with the kids at some point. What is the temperature in October?

PhotoDad · 29/01/2023 18:18

Also, we stayed some of the time in Western-style hotels, but some was in a "ryokan" (traditional Japanese hotel) where you sleep on big mats that are put away during the day... it was a bit like "indoor camping."

JamSandle · 29/01/2023 18:19

It sounds like it will be an amazing trip.

ellerman · 29/01/2023 18:19

I had an autumn trip with my family.
4 days Tokyo
2 nights 3 days Japanese Alps
3 nights Kyoto /Nara
7 nights on Kyushu with day trip to Hiroshima, we had friends there. Visited Nagasaki, Beppu, Kagoshima, Mt Aso. Kirishima

Ours was related to previous visits and friends, hence a bit off the usual tourist route and volcano and hot springs dominated.

I mean - I know it's not for everyone but Tokyo DisneySea is well worth a visit! It's the more adrenaline ride filled one, compared to the Disneyland park. Cost about £50 each when we went and you can get the direct train in and out from Tokyo on the day.

Might be a bit of a junky cultural break for your kids - although the Japanese have their own quirks when it comes to Disney which was fascinating!

TokyoBouncyBall · 29/01/2023 18:25

We thought our Japan trip was once in a lifetime when we booked it; but it was so amazing we are saving to go back.

In terms of centres, Kyoto is great if you like old Japan, and Nara is a great day trip from there too. But for us with 11 year old DD Osaka was also a really amazing vibrant place. And if you can, go into the countryside too and stay at a ryokan, the traditional inn at a hot springs- we did in Hakone which isn’t too far.

Get a rail pass before you go and book the Ghibli museum well in advance too. And don’t just do tourist stuff - we could spend hours in the pound shops.

I could go on for pages but we also stayed in a hotel with Godzilla on the roof which was pretty cool; the manga museum in Kyoto has English books and signs; the street in Tokyo where the shops sell plastic food for restaurant displays is mad and the vending machines will blow your mind, especially when you get hot clam soup instead of cappuccino.

Also, hotel breakfasts will be a highlight of your stay.

Message me if you want specifics of places and hotels.

MissKittyFantastico84 · 29/01/2023 18:28

Also, the hedgehog cafes, and obviously you have to visit Harajuku. It's just geared up to appeal to the kids - all photo booths and cute stuff and crazy food vendors.

Tokyo also had these places called Dagashi Bars - which are all you can eat candy bars! You pay a small fee then can just go nuts trying all the japanese sweets. They serve booze too!

And if your kids are mad for katsu curry, Curry CoCo is a fab place for a cheap and quick bowl of the stuff. No frills, but a great place to have a more affordable (delicious) meal. They have them all over Tokyo. x

Moonlaserbearwolf · 29/01/2023 18:29

@PhotoDad We did exactly the same.
October is a much better time to go…

In 2 weeks we did 3 nights in Osaka, 4 in Tokyo, 2 in Hakone and 4 in Kyoto. A busy trip, but I’d recommend visiting all these places if you have time. The only thing we didn’t have time for was a trip to see the monkeys in the hot springs north of Tokyo.

The children loved everything about Japan, especially….

Osaka - Aquarium (whale sharks!), fish market
Tokyo - Temples, food market, kareoke, pet shop selling weird and wonderful outfits for cats and dogs!
kyoto - Gion at night (saw several Geisha), railway museum, Hard Rock Cafe (!), Tea shop to buy matcha tea.
Hakone - favourite part of the trip. Stayed in wonderful traditional ryokan with koi carp pond. Circular trip around the Hakone ropeway.

Gashapon machines were an endless source of fun. And shopping for origami paper and manga stuff.

Just a few ideas - there is so much to do. Writing this has reminded me I need to go again!

XelaM · 29/01/2023 18:30

I have never been but my brother (who has been many times) and my parents say it's the absolutely best country on Earth.

PhotoDad · 29/01/2023 18:32

The Science Museum and the Zoo in Tokyo won't have changed much, and were both amazing.

Forever42 · 29/01/2023 18:41

I would love to go but worry about not being able to speak the language. How have those who visited found it? Did you organise everything yourselves or go with a tour operator?

Hobbi · 29/01/2023 18:44

Tokyo museum, an onsen hotel, puppet theatre, piss alley, so, so many food options.

highdrylowerwetter · 29/01/2023 18:46

We went in oct 2019. Loved it. Best trip ever. Business hotels were cheap and excellent value. Every hotel we stayed in (booked via booking.com) was 3-4* and all had literally everything- PJs, shampoo, umbrellas, sometimes free dinner?! So good. Service was excellent and everyone was tripping over themselves to help us.
Get the rail passes delivered to you in the uk before travelling. Look up where you can use them- it included some regional trains I think the one up to the 32k tori gates in kyoto for example and an airport train to one of the Tokyo airports (can't recall which)

Their equivalents of Oyster cards were easy and useful to use at nearly all vending machines across tokyo and kyoto as well as for buying food on the bullet trains. Random but handy. We found 7/11s everywhere were also useful for picking up lunch on the go.

In Tokyo the government metropolitan building was a great free viewpoint, we went at sunset. we loved the senso ji shrine and meiji jingu. Tsukiji fish market was a fun lunch trip. We wanted to do the tuna auction but it was soo early in the morning we were too tired. The crossing at shibuya is awesome- we went and got a hot chocolate from the Starbucks above just before bed and sat people watching in awe of this crazy city. TeamLab borderless we LOVED. Got there first thing and absolutely loved it. But look it up and see if it's your scene. If not, skip! We went to akihabara one afternoon and found lots of Mario kart games machines which we had fun reliving our childhoods with. I avoided the exotic animal cafes as there were issues with how well the animals were looked after.

We went into kyoto which was so different but absolutely worthwhile. Dinner in Gion and looking for geisha girls (look out for Chinese tourists who dress up as them though!), the gold leaf shrine (kinkaku-ji) was stunning and then afternoon trip up to fushimi inari taisha with the thousands of tori gates. It's much older with v few skyscrapers but there's a temple on every corner and we just LOVED it. There is an underground (I think) but it only runs in 2 directions so we took a lot of buses via google maps. We also did a tea ceremony and Mochi making - found the company via tripadvisor but found this super interesting and the staff were lovely. There's also the bamboo forest with monkeys but sadly we had a typhoon hit so never made it there! You need 3 nights at least I think in kyoto..

I think if I were doing 14 nights I'd probably look into a stay in Hakone where there are views of Mount fuji and a much slower pace of life. I've never been able to find the perfect hotel for us there, though so that's held us back a little.

We stayed for several nights on the South Island due to other reasons we were there. There wasn't much there and I wouldn't recommend it but a trip to Hiroshima might be educational. Not sure if I'd take DC as young as 9 though if I'm honest. It's pretty dark

Autumn is a great time to go. You might catch the autumn leaves which imo were absolutely beautiful. You can I think google a website that'll tell you their forecast in different parts of Japan so you'll know if you're likely to see them in their peak bloom!

Finally, the food is fantastic in Japan! I am severely allergic to wheat and everyone was SO helpful and accommodating I really ate so well and felt so safe. The people and their kindness really blew us away. Enjoy! It's the trip of a lifetime!

highdrylowerwetter · 29/01/2023 18:47

Sorry that was long! Also, just to add. We had no language issues at all. Even outside of Tokyo and kyoto in more rural areas we got by find

Obviously only my own experience... We organised everything to fit around work commitments. We tried using "phrasebook" Japanese, and the effort was appreciated, but in the major cities if we stood still at a junction for more than 10 seconds we found that people would ask us politely, in English, whether they could help! (Plus our very blonde kids attracted lots of cooing, which was slightly odd.)

CatOnTheChair · 29/01/2023 19:02

GO!
We went for a week (split holiday with Hong Kong for other reasons).
We were based in Kyoto, with a day trip on the train to Osaka, and a day in Nara. Spent the rest of the time puttering round the city and tourist sites.
It was absolutely fabulous. The kids were 8 and 10, and had a blast. The food was out of this world.
We were there right at the start of Cherry blossom season. I would imagine the autumn colours would be equally glorious.

BookwormButNoTime · 29/01/2023 20:20

Lots of great recommendations above. If you have time then I would recommend visiting the Okinawa islands at the end of the trip. We stayed at the Club Med on Ishigaki-Jima and I love the fact that nobody else I know has ever visited there. Stunningly beautiful and not what you expect from Japan at all.

TheBirdintheCave · 29/01/2023 20:20

I've been twice, I love Japan so much and can't wait to go back but I have a toddler now so am 'stuck' with Europe until he can manage long haul 😭

With 14 days we did a loop of:

Tokyo > Hakone > Kyoto (with Nara day trip) > Okayama and Kurashiki > Hiroshima > Miyajima > Kanazawa > Takayama > Tokyo.

Wherever you go you'll have an incredible time! It's just the most amazing place.

pinksquash13 · 29/01/2023 22:20

Agree with all the other comments, it really was my favourite holiday. So good. Want to go again. We did Toyko, Kyoto (day trip to Nara) and Hiroshima. Hiroshima was amazing but perhaps not with kids, it was very emotional and hardhitting. We used the tube a lot in Tokyo, we got some sort of tube card from a kind of department store. One of the best days we had was with our own local tour using 'free walking tours' in Tokyo. Not sure if they still run. Also did a free walking group tour in Kyoto. Definitely buy the rail ticket. I agree that the business hotels were great prices and had lots of extras like pjs and an evening drink included, small rooms but fine. Brekky is fun (mini burger anyone?)

User65412 · 08/03/2023 14:33

If anyone is still on this thread can you help me?
Keen to go to Japan but as I understand it you have to be triple vaccinated or have negative pcr 72 hours before. We're all double vaccinated and 119 have told me today that you can no longer get a 3rd dose unless vulnerable. Slightly worried about booking a huge holiday like this with the risk that one of us may twat positive days before!

Bells3032 · 08/03/2023 15:58

The digital art museum in Tokoyo was the surprise highlight of our trip.

Gotta do the road (whose name i've blanked) its a bit like a japanese version of camden on steroids).

An animal cafe and sushi restaurants are an obvious must. And the Tokoyo Pokemon store if either of your kids are fans
