Tips for keeping 2 year old safe abroad

We are taking my son on holiday this summer to southern Spain with his grandparents so there will be 4 adults and one child.

This is the first time he will have been abroad and I'm terrified of him getting lost or taken (I know it might be irrational)

We are taking a buggy to put him in if the walks get too long or an area is particularly busy and we have a wrist strap we can attach so he can walk too.

I was thinking of getting a little wrist strap where I can write down my phone number or hotel incase he gets lost.

Was even thinking of getting an apple air tag to attach to him. It this OTT? Am I being completely paranoid.

We are staying in a resort but plan to go out to the beach and town etc.

He is a very adventurous 2 year old are would just run off and go with anyone I think.

He’s at no more risk than in the UK. Just make sure you know which adult is watching him.

armbands or another form of float for the pool and around it.

With four adults... always have a designated adult who is watching him. It can be easy to think someone else is. So if that person needs the toilet or to fetch something, they handover to another adult. Especially near a pool or the sea.

If you have access to a pool, have very clear rules (no going in without your bouycany aid, adult needs to be in first, that sort of thing and don't be afraid of taking them out if they don't follow the rules.

Lots of suncream, hats and consider a UV vest for the pool/beach.

Just think of how to keep a 2 year old safe in the UK on holiday or at the beach/pool and do that. Yes you are being way OTT and paranoid. It's Spain. With a 4:1 adult to toddler ratio!

In terms of running off in crowds, the little life backpacks are much better than a wrist strap as they have more confit and freedom to roam. And the decathlon zip up buoyancy jackets are comfy, less restrictive than arm bands and don't fall off so just always wear anywhere near the water.

How have you kept him safe for 2 years?
Just apply the same rules there.

You'll be fine and I'm sure you'll all have a great time.

It's no different to going for a day out in the UK. Is there a reason why you're more anxious about being in Spain than you would be at home?

Hoppinggreen · 24/01/2023 10:18

He will be fine but I echo the point about having a designated adult and communicating well. So make it clear if you are handing over to someone else to be on pool watch etc.
Dont panic if your child gets attention though, it’s much more usual in Spain for strangers to interact with your child - DD was very blonde and it wasn’t unusual for her to be scooped out of her high chair In restaurants by a waitress and taken to be introduced to other staff members

I think an air tag is a good idea.

I usually also bring a smoke alarm with me in case the hotel or air B&B doesn't have one.

Maybe some people think that's OTT but it gives me peace of mind.

We had a Little Life backpack, easy and DD loved hers. We had a small card with our mobile numbers in it.

I agree with the others, a decicated adult keeping track of your child.

We went out with DD several times in the UK for trips, in Germany when visiting family and abroad in Spain. The same rules apply everywhere, keep track of your child, no special Air Tags needed.

As others have said.
Take the same precautions you take every time you leave the house in the UK.
Watch him near the pool.

This
You need to have a designated person at all times, you can't risk ' I thought you were watching' especially near the pool or sea.
Plus mine wore a little buoyancy vest round the pool.

Agree with PPs. The most important thing is to have a designated adult who's got a firm eye on the toddler, and a very clear handover. No confusion about who's in charge and that it was misunderstood and oh I thought X was doing it.
Other than that, abroad is no different to holiday here in the UK. Don't worry, it'll all be fine and every time after this will be that much easier.

Enjoy!
