March City break destinations if you are gluten free!

I am 50 in March and am thinking of booking a city break for a few days. Any recommendations for destinations that are good for those who can't eat gluten?

We love eating out and history.

Thank you!

I went to Florence with a friend who was coeliac and she was super impressed with the options available - it will satisfy the history requirement too!

Becky Excell does some great guides for different cities on her blog. Italy is meant to be fab for gluten free, I'm personally eyeing up Rome :)

Italy is probably the most coeliac friendly country in the world. We’ve been to Rome twice and found that most of the menus are clearly and labeled. Several restaurants had menus where every dish was available as a GF option and we did see a couple of completely GF restaurants and bakeries. We even went to a completely GF ice cream shop!

Another vote for Italy, they take it very seriously.

Thanks everyone! Looks like Italy is a good option! I've not been before and would love to go so sounds perfect 😀

I live in Italy and can confirm that all allergens are taken very seriously. I suppose with pasta and pizza being mainstays, and gluten intolerances and coeliac disease being on the increase, they have to be on the ball.

I’ve done a lot of Googling about this as my child is gluten free and the consensus seems to be that Italy is the best place to visit. Also tonnes of history!

We have other allergies to contend with too but we’re starting our family travels abroad in Italy this year.

My friend is gluten and dairy free, we managed well in Budapest.

I found Spain was great for Gluten free too.

France, Belgim, Germany not so good.

Another late shoutout for Spain! Lots of great gluten-free options, very clearly marked on menus by law. If you end up going to Madrid, this company does fully gluten free tapas tours in the city.

Coeliac is historically common in Italy, and also Ireland - that’s why they’re good at catering for GF.

Just had the most amazing few days in Iceland (Reykjavik) and Gf eating was so easy, as was vegetarian.

Another vote for Italy. My 12 year old is gluten intolerant, thankfully not coeliac. Italy was easy for supermarkets and eating out. We found the Netherlands had lots of places that served gluten free but not quite as easy as Italy.

Valencia

Barcelona...my DS has coeliac and we were really impressed with the amount of gluten free options there was. Many restaurants and cafes were dedicated to gluten free. They were very knowledgeable over there
