I want to take my 2 teens on a sightseeing type break for around a week that is out of Europe. Ideally within 10hrs flying time.

Any recommendations?

New York

Notimeforaname · 22/01/2023 17:09

Well youd be looking at the US or Middle East with less then 10 hours flying time.. Or somewhere in Africa or India?
Iceland or Greenland? Canada?

VivaVivaa · 22/01/2023 17:09

What do you like? Cold weather, hot weather? When are you going? How long are you going for? By sightseeing do you mean cities (which is what I probably would take it as) or wider than that? What’s your budget?

Apologies, I see you’ve said for a week!

California?

Ten hours is very specific!

Theyweretheworstoftimes · 22/01/2023 17:15

Ten hours will cut off most of Asia and Asia with teens would be incredible.

marmiteadict · 22/01/2023 18:36

Pretty much it's the East coast of the US ranging from New York down to Miami and the Florida keys in one direction and the Middle East including Dubai in the other.

I've done the Maldives and Mauritius with small children but they are over the 10 hour mark. Similarly Thailand, Bali, Singapore and Malaysia etc.

10 hours suggests you don't want to be in Europe so I'd personally choose a location on the East coast of the US. There's a lot to choose from. We did a week In Florida Keys when the children were 5 and 7.

Go south. Loads of good options on the huge continent to the south of Europe. Try Ghana.

kirinm · 22/01/2023 18:39

Mexico is about 10 hours.

hryllilegur · 22/01/2023 18:41

If you’re ok with 10 hours, why not 12-14 that would make SE Asia a possibility too?

Try Seoul. 12.5 hours from London. Remarkably cheap once you get there.

marmiteadict · 22/01/2023 18:43

Apologies just realised you have teens. What about a fly drive ? East coast of US or Canada.

A neighbour did an organised fly/ drive to Canada with teens and they loved it. Calgary to Vancouver, over the Rockies and Vancouver Island.

8.5 hours to Calgary from LHR

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 22/01/2023 18:43

South US is about ten hours flying time. New Orleans, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Nashville or Memphis might be fun (not all at the same time, obviously)

maranella · 22/01/2023 18:49

New York
Jerusalem
Marrakesh
Cairo/Luxor
Kenya safari

i was going to suggest Ghana one of our best every holidays.

somewhereovertherain · 22/01/2023 21:08

Caribbean. Canada. Ghana.

Silkierabbit · 23/01/2023 00:57

Costa Rica is around that and great for teens rainforest ziplines wildlife etc. Or Cape Town penguins on the beach Table Mountain etc

SiliconHeaven · 23/01/2023 01:00

I’m in New Orleans at the moment, it’s not very teen-friendly

maranella · 23/01/2023 07:31

New Orleans is a party town i.e. it revolves around drinking. Since people can't drink in the USA until 21 it's not a destination for DC. Also, having been there (a long time ago), I'm struggling to think of very much for DC to do there. The French Quarter is basically some pretty buildings in an area full of bars and there is lots of stag party type behaviour, not DC-friendly. I remember it smelled bad too - like a swamp (which it is, so not surprising!)

mama2girls0 · 23/01/2023 07:52

@DirtyGertie30 South Africa, Ie Cape Town and the Garden Route...it's stunning.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 23/01/2023 07:56

Maldives?

FuckabethFuckor · 23/01/2023 07:57

Arizona is interesting (I think so, anyway). Desert landscape which feels totally ‘other’ compared to the UK. Phoenix and Tucson both decent big cities. Up around Sedona is gorgeous; red rocks and huge sky. Stargazing in Arizona is something else. Quite a few luxury resorts relatively close to Phoenix airport. Lots of Mexican and Mexican-influence culture and food. Just under 11 hours from Heathrow.

trulyunruly01 · 23/01/2023 08:24

Yes, the Garden Route in SA. Flights are slightly over 10hr but made bearable because they are overnight both ways. Driving is very easy.
With teens we did Cape Town, Oudtshoorn, Addo National Park, Knysna, Hermanus, a couple of days at Aquila reserve, which took us back to within a couple of hours of CT airport.
Teens are in their twenties now but still see that trip as a massive landmark in their lives. They learnt a lot.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/01/2023 10:23

South Africa. It's actually nearer 12 hrs, but no jet lag to deal with.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/01/2023 10:24

X post.

marmiteadict · 24/01/2023 19:17

@DirtyGertie30 did you make a decision? There are so many great suggestions on here that I'm curious to know where you're thinking about
