Staying in Brooklyn for 3 day hol in New York?

Hello!

In the past week Ive been looking hotel prices have jumped massively, so now thinking maybe staying in Brooklyn as opposed to Financial/Chelsea areas.

Does anyone who’s been have any opinions on this? Do I just suck up the hotel prices to stay fairly central to Manhattan or is the commute from Brooklyn worth the price difference and extra time getting to the tourist traps?

Any thoughts most welcome!!

3 days isn't long, I personally wouldn't want to be spending time commuting in. When are you going?

We went to New York in October and stayed in the Hotel Bleu in Gowanus, Brooklyn. I wouldn’t recommend it. It was noisy from the road outside and there was very little sound insulation in the actual building. There was no housekeeping during the 4 nights we stayed there. Considering we were paying over £300 a night, it seemed really bad value. We spent our last night in a courtyard Marriott hotel on Pearl street in the financial district. This was much better - quiet, comfortable and no traffic noise. Also the old seaport area is really interesting. I’d definitely go back and stay there. Hope you have a great time!

I’m definitely staying in Brooklyn next time I go! With a room with a stunning view across the river to the city.
We’ve stayed central Manhattan and Queens (very cheap!) and you’ll spend time in taxis/public transport either way. When we stayed in Queens we were 1 stop away from Central Park Lexington Avenue/59.

Of course, it depends where in Brooklyn you choose to stay. Williamsburg will take more travelling than Dumbo - if love to stay there.

Absolutely do it. Alternatively, look at the Jersey shoreline - Hoboken or waterside JC. As long as you're not way out, travel times are mobile and savings are huge. Also so nice to be able to look across the water to the city.

We’re going in April, kicking myself I didn’t reserve the hotel room when I first looked!

I had read a couple of hotel reviews about the road noise in Brooklyn and being a light sleeper I was thinking it might bother me but with all the walking maybe I’ll be too knackered to care!?!?

Thank you for the recommendation @Equimum I’ll definitely look into that area. If I hadn’t had seen a couple of cheap deals I probably wouldn’t be overthinking it so much. It’s a big birthday and my original Vegas plans fell through so when I saw BA had some good sale prices for NY it got me thinking!!

Try removing cookies from your phone. Booking sites track your activity so the next time you look prices have gone up. Same applies to flights.

With a bit of luck you’ll find Manhattan prices are lower again.

I am obsessed looking at hotels in NYC for our proposed trip in 2024.
I love the look of hotel 1 Brooklyn as the view of the bridge looks incredible. Its my 50th Birthday trip and do not want to slum it but neither do i want to spend 1000s of dollars. I would love a fabulous manhattan view. So the fact I am bringing 2 teenagers as well as DH i just cannot justify the cost of hotel 1 when breakfast is also extortionate.i have checked willliansburg and that is now so hip the prices albeit slightly lower than Brooklyn bridge area are not worth it given the journey time to manhattan. You can get to manhattan from a subway near dumbo in minutes. That leaves Queens and Long island city as well as roosevelt island. The marriott at The Brooklyn Bridge looks good BUT i just think leaving a broadway show or just living manhattan wont be the same getting the subway out late pm
.it just feels like work!!! So im back to Manhattan. Financial district is cheaper definately esp wall street. 3 days isint enough to waste subway/ commuting time. Hotels are expensive .i want to make a cuppa but dont want flowery decor and a rubbish looking kitchenette.. breakfast included is expensive and i cannot believe 5 star hotels often dont offer brekki!! So am weighing it all up at the mo". My advice is stay in manhattan

Cantstandbullshitanymore · 19/01/2023 23:12

It depends on where in Brooklyn. I’ve stayed at the Marriott Brooklyn bridge and it was a good location, and you can also take a leisurely walk across the bridge if you want.

Rantypanties · 20/01/2023 16:03

Thank you @BookwormButNoTime I kept deleting my history/incognito mode but not the cookies. It’s magically reduced a lot of the hotels by $200 for the total stay so that takes the sting out a little!

Yes you should. You'll save money. Depending on where you stay in Brooklyn, it will take you less time to get to attractions/neighbourhoods in lower Manhattan than if you stayed uptown. Most importantly, Brooklyn has some of the most interesting neighbourhoods, restaurants, bars and stores in the entire city. You should be visiting it wherever you're staying if you want to see what's really interesting in New York right now.

The poster who stayed in Gowanus - sorry - that's a crappy location.

😂😂 yeah it wasn’t the best. My brother lives on on Grand Army plaza and we wanted to be as near to him as possible and there weren’t many options. Definitely won’t be staying there again tho.

I have a soft spot for it as there wee some cracking outdoor daytime raves there in my pre kids years. But it’s not prime BK.

I went Last November and stayed in an Airbnb in Weehawken New Jersey. Bus through the Lincoln tunnel took 15 minutes to the port authority bus terminal on 42nd street. Cost was way cheaper than central New York hotel prices and the view from the end of the street overlooking the Hudson River was worth every penny. I’d do the same again in a heartbeat!

WoolyMammoth55 · 22/01/2023 22:16

OP, big question is what do you want to do with your 3 days?

If it's Empire State rooftop, walk down Broadway, picnic in Central Park, pizza in Times Square, etc, then don't stay in Brooklyn.

But we were in Brooklyn for 6 months a couple of years ago and loved it! We were just below Dumbo, plus our best friends live in Williamsburg.

Often on Sunday mornings we walked over the Brooklyn bridge for dimsum in Chinatown - really lovely. The Brooklyn Botanical Garden is fab too, and Prospect Park is very nice for a run/stroll/picnic.

Mostly BK has lots of lovely vibey neighbourhood brunches and drinks, whereas I think at this point very few 'real people' can afford Manhattan, so it feels very touristy in comparison?

But if you just want the '3-day city highlights tour' then I think you should hold out for a Manhattan hotel. Either way, enjoy! :)

We stayed at the Even Hotel and were happy with our choice. The modern hotel had very efficiently, well-designed compact rooms and a gathering place on the first floor - https://hotellook.tp.st/pczQCY2P

Exactly this. I much prefer Brooklyn to Manhattan! It’s much funkier and cooler. We like Brooklyn Heights, Dumbo, Prospect Park. If you’re going in summer I’d highly recommend the New York Ferry (not the Staten Island free one, this is the same price as the subway, cheap as chips ) over to Manhattan which goes from Dumbo and a few other spots in Brooklyn and is fabulous! Doesn’t take long either.

Tbh I’d be spending most of my time in Brooklyn rather than Manhattan anyway as I prefer the vibe there. But appreciate a lot you may want to see is Manhattan so I’d spend my days there and evenings in Brooklyn.

This is hilariously identical to my train of thought over the last 48 hours of hotel research. Where did you stay in the end? Currently booking..

Radyward · 21/08/2025 07:29

@wholeeverything
We booked a suite at the casablanca hotel. Breakfast was coffee / tea / bagels / cereal/ toast / boiled eggs fruit and juice and bottled water. They also do all day tea and coffee plus snacks. Biscuits / croissants etc.the only coffee i bought in our entire 5 day trip was in bryant park which I loved!!!!. Great clean comfy hotel with lovely staff and was reasonable in light of what you get in other hotels. Right beside tomy di napoli a brilliant Italian restaurant and bar serving platters which would feed 3 people and so buzzy. Loved it
