French swimming pools- shorts rules

Currently planning this year's family holiday, lots of great looking places keep coming up in France. However most of them say "no swimming shorts" but then some of their photos have people wearing what I would consider swimming shorts.

Do you know how strict they tend to be? Ds is autistic and wouldn't cope with shorts that were tight to the body, but it wouldn't have to be board shirts either. Just regular swim shorts. Don't want to book somewhere and find he can't go swimming. Will happily look elsewhere if that's the case.

@Greatly I get that they aren't as streamlined for swimming, but why are they filthy? I understand that a very small minority, might wear them all day but most people treat them the same as swimming trunks, on just before you swim, off and rinsed straight afterwards.

I've been brainwashed by the French 😅

Does anyone know if kids would get away with wearing a shorty wet suit in French campsite swimming pools? DS8 doesn’t have ASD but is an absolute pain when it comes to clothes of any sort.

Forever42 · 14/05/2023 14:24

A wetsuit like a rubber one or more of a rash vest with shorts? I've never seen a full on wetsuit in the pool but lots of the other type. Not to say it wouldn't be allowed, but then I tend to find most campsites don't care what you wear in the pool these days.

You could always email the site to check.

I am so stressed about this for our upcoming holiday. Even dd won't wear usual girls style swimming costume so I've bought her an all in one with slightly longer legs than the above decathlon suggestion and myself too as we usually wear board short. Dh has similar but again but slight longer They are properly tight, there's no mistaking them for board shorts and they go down maybe 1/4 or third of alour thighs. Does anyone know if this will be acceptable? If I wear bikini style costume there will be a lot of hair on show, I'm guessing that wouldn't be acceptable either.

Decathlon is a good idea, because they are French owned and very popular in France, so the logo says it all.

(I never saw a work person who wasn’t t wearing a Decathlon fleece or t shirt when they turned up the the house, it’s just a way of fitting in).

My DD wore a swimsuit with long shorts last year and nobody had any issies. The only swim clothes I have ever seen banned in French pools are baggy boardshorts as there is a feeling they will have sand stuck in them from the beach. Any other sort of swimming attire is fine. Increasingly, campsites etc don't have any restrictions at all. It's been years since I saw anyone in Speedos and baggy shorts are quite widely worn. DH always takes them. It's best to clarify with the particular place you are staying though. Sites with a large number of British clientele are less likely to have restrictions IME.

Also, the French would unlikely to be bothered by a bit of body hair!

My son's shorty wetsuit is from Decathlon. https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/100-kid-s-1-5mm-neoprene-blue-shorty-surfing-wetsuit/_/R-p-170576?mc=8403220&c=BLUE

I will admit I am stressed about this too. My dh has a pair of budgie smugglers from previous French trips and he's already been prancing around in them. DS1 is autistic but will probably be OK. It's DS2 who is a pain with clothes. We are going to Normandy and booking separately to save money. The site is likely to be quite French (which in general I am a fan of).

Does the tight trunks rule cover both in and out of the water, ie sunbathing, relaxing out of the water as well as swimming? If so, could you wear a sarong for modesty when not swimming?

It seems a bit of a cruel rule.

gogohmm · 16/05/2023 22:05

You can wear what you like not swimming though we found they policed what was worn into the pool area cover ups were allowed, I certainly had a sarong. Not sure why people think its cruel to make men wear the equivalent of what women are expected to wear??? My dp wears trunks anyway because he wants to swim, at least half the men at lane swimming here do

The Spanish rule of having to wear a swimming hat in indoor pools is worse.
