Looking for a large lightweight decent suitcase.
What do you use, hard/soft shell?
I've been looking at IT Luggage & Tripp.
Any recommendations welcome!

I have a hard shell Tripp and it's been spot on - subsequently bought a couple more in different sizes. Good quality and reasonable prices in sales.

I've got a soft shell Samsonite (carry on size) + a large hard shell that I hardly ever use now because it's just too big. Would recommend the carry on, it was from the B'Lite range (55cm).

Also have a hard shell American Tourister brand), in carry on size, The lid has an extra zipper which increases the capacity, which is much recommended if you've picked up some shopping whilst on holiday!

Also have a very old IT Luggage case that I got with Tesco Clubcard points. It's a bit battered and doesn't have spinner wheels, but has held up very well and has more space/less oddly shape compartment, as it's a more basic design than most these days.

I've hard shell cases in the past and don't favour them. They get bashed out and damaged in the hold and if you use them as hand luggage you can't get anything in or out without opening the full case.
I have an IT holdall on wheels which is really lightweight and has been amazing.

I have had two hard shell cases in my life, supposedly good quality ones, one was Antler, and both have been damaged in transit. So for the last few years I have been using a large Kipling soft case on wheels.

I'd pick hardshell over soft shell. If you over stuff a soft shell they are impossible to roll. 4 wheel over 2 wheel, so much easier to roll and stand up by themselves.

Samsonite hardshell if you can afford it. It luggage isn't bad otherwise. If I was getting softshell I'd stick with IT luggage. Tbf I've never had a suitcase damaged in transit, either samsonite or it, hard or soft. I haven't tried trip. I wouldn’t chose American tourista unless I really wanted the Disney pattern, its OK but you can tell the difference between AT and samsonite and it doesn't warrant the increased cost over IT.

I’ve heard great reviews for Tripp. I am thinking of getting one for an upcoming holiday.

I’ve only ever had soft cases, but I am sick of all my expensive unguents getting squashed and leaking.

We have used Tripp luggage of various sizes for quite a few years now. They have been fine and have stood up quite well but I do find the big ones quite unwieldy, particularly when fully (over) loaded! I'm interested to hear what others say about soft shelled cases. My adult children use North Face duffel bags which they both swear by.

emmathedilemma · 19/01/2023 15:22

I have one of those North Face duffel bags (it's a different brand but fundamentally the same bag) and it's great for car trips but I hardly ever use it for flights as once full i find it impossible to carry as they don't have wheels. When it's full it's too wide to easily carry by the short handles and it's too long in the bag for me to carry on my back (let alone the effort of actually getting it onto your back).

I have an osprey duffel (also backpack straps) that is awesome for large size hand luggage. Been in the hold no problem. I get the appeal of holdalls, but youve got to be fit and strong for anything larger than hand luggage.
