Is £2,610 good value for a weeks trip to Lalandia in Billund?

Never really been on holiday before, seen Lalandia mentioned a few times on this board. I booked a week long trip for me, DH and DD (who will be 5) but the costs seem to just keep on rising. I’m completely clueless so could really use a bit of advice with it.

The accommodation itself is costing £1,160 at the end of August which seemed like a great deal. After looking at flights, airport hotels because the only flights are 11pm there and back, car hire, ordering passports and buying entertainment passes for Legoland and onsite activities it’s added an extra nearly £1,500 to the trip, and that’s before adding in any spending money for food and anything else so will probably be about £3,000 in total.

I really like the look of the place and I’m sure DD would absolutely love it but we’re not loaded with cash and it feels like I’m ripping myself off a bit going here. I’ve had a look and we could do 3 nights at Disneyland Paris, 3 nights at legoland windsor and a few nights in Blackpool (for the water park) for quite a bit cheaper. Looks like we could also go somewhere hot and all inclusive for the same price too.

I do have my heart set on Lalandia but is it supposed to be this expensive or have I gone wrong somewhere?

Please help!

Lalandia and Legoland in Billund are absolutely amazing but I think a week is too long, a long weekend on a half term (or an inset day/taking her out of school) when the Danish children aren’t off would probably be fine and you wouldn’t need car hire. Also if you need passports you would need them for Disneyland Paris?

when we went we combined it with a few days in Copenhagen (caught the train from Billund and flew home from
there) so you can visit Tivoli, but definitely Denmark is not a cheap trip!!

Ah thank you! I do have a habit of severely underestimating what we can get done in a day, I was actually worrying that a week may not be long enough.

We can save loads of money doing it that way, but spending less makes it even more frustrating that the flights get in so late so we need to pay for airport hotels on top. I’ll have a look tomorrow and figure something out though.

Yes to the passports, I included them when working things out. I don’t mind paying for those though, as obviously it’s only a once every ten years expense.

Presuming you are looking at flights to Billund. I don't know where you are travelling from but you could also look at flights to Aarhus, you should get better travel times. If you are planning to hire a car anyway it's about an hours drive to Billund. You could also spend a couple of days in Aarhus, it's a lovely place!

AnotherSpare · 17/01/2023 00:44

I'm also wondering what accommodation you've booked for that price? Even for Denmark, which is expensive, and in August, that seems a lot for (presumably) one room.

Colourmix · 17/01/2023 01:45

@AnotherSpare thanks! I’ll take a look at flights to Aarhus now. I’m flying to Manchester, the next closest airport is Heathrow which is about 3 hours away and costs a fortune on the train so probably wouldn’t be worth it.

lalandia itself is £1,160 for 7 nights, then I’m looking at Zleep hotel Billund airport which is £140 for the night (cheapest I can find) and a hotel at Manchester airport is £150 (we live over an hour away and DD will be exhausted, I wouldn’t want to be dragging her about on trains at that time of night)

Could you get to/from Birmingham? You can fly Birmingham - Billund at much better times, reasonable prices. So that would remove an airport stay. Or you could fly out from Manchester to Copenhagen and back from Billund to Birmingham, both daytime flights.
Direct to Aarhus only from London I think so forget that idea.
Then perhaps as the other poster says, cut down the length of the stay at LL, as a week there is a very generous amount of time. Either a shorter trip altogether or spend some days elsewhere - Aarhus, Odense, Fanø, Skagen, Copenhagen - all lovely places to spend time.
Little changes to cut down a bit of cost. You'll have a great time anyway!

When we took our nearly 5 year old to Denmark, we went for a week, flew into Copenhagen and drove the two hours over to the west side, stayed in a lovely town called Vejle. Self catering as restaurant prices are very expensive.

For us, we wanted a week away but also wanted to not being doing 'Lego' things every day. Billund itself as a town is very sterile, not much there, it's basically a few touristy restaurants, couple of supermarkets built around Lego attractions and their HQ.

We decided not to pay £££ to stay at Lalandia and for us it was the right decision. We did Lego House x 2 days, Legoland theme park on one day, but also went to other places Viking Museum in Jelling, Day in Vejle (great forest, beach, another good museum in the town, plus shops/restaurants). I think we had a chill day too!

On the day we were flying home our plan was to go to the Copenhagen aquarium on the way back to the airport. DS had a complete meltdown there, I think he was completed exhausted and over stimulated by a week of full on fun. Going off my experience, I don't think you need all the additional attractions that Lalandia offer like big waterparks etc.

So my advice to you would be looking at getting self catering accommodation for a week and travelling to and from Billund on the days you are doing Lego attractions. I think from memory Vejle was about 25 mins from Billund and a super easy drive. Parking next door to both Lego House and Lego Land is super easy.

I'd look at what other options there are to fly to the West side of Denmark, there is no real need to fly into Copenhagen if you're not visiting. Also there is an expensive toll bridge to cross, I'm sure it was £35 each way!

HTH!

Billund Airport is right next to Lalandia and legoland.

We stayed in the Legoland holiday park. Camping (we drove from Germany) but they also have cabins and a hotel.

Food is very expensive in Denmark

Havanananana · 17/01/2023 20:01

You don't really need a whole week in Billund - I can't think what you'd do for a week there. One day in Legoland, plus a day in the Lego House would be enough. Of course Lalandia gives you the water park activities etc. but that still leaves time to fill. The Zleep hotel is good value and right next to the airport - you can watch the planes landing and taking off while eating breakfast.

@yoshiblue has some good ideas. Vejle is 30 minutes away by car (or a bit longer by bus) and there are some nice things there as mentioned, plus the ecology exhibition Økolariet, which is fascinating for a 5 year old - they get to travel on a virtual tour of the sewers in a simulator and meet the rats. Adults enjoy it too. Aarhus is also a good option for beaches, museums and art and the Tivoli Friheden amusement park.

Going in the other direction, an hour west takes you to the Jutland west coast where there are miles of sandy beaches and sand dunes - very quiet and not built-up and the total opposite of an English resort such as Blackpool. Stay in a summer house or a holiday apartment, or just do a day trip to somewhere like Henne Strand.

For car hire, if you need it, look at a site such as autoeurope where you can compare prices. Public transport is excellent in Denmark - but Billund has no railway station and is only served by regional buses, although these are regular and reliable. See rejseplanen.dk for all public transport options.

Food prices in restaurants and cafes are more expensive than in the UK - supermarket prices are just a bit higher than the UK, so self-catering is a good way to keep things affordable.

Thanks all this has all helped me out a lot, I’m so glad I posted. Can’t remember if I mentioned unthread, but I have a bad habit of massively underestimating what we can manage in a single day!

I’ve been doing lots of research following all your great tips and I’ve reduced Lalandia to 3 nights, ditched the car hire (we were hiring because I have mobility issues but I can probably manage if it’s only a couple of days) and will be getting the return flight to Birmingham which lands at 10am instead of nearly 11pm, it’s only an hour further on the train than Manchester, only an extra £3pp - amazing!

I’ve managed to cut the cost down to £1,500 with all this, I’m shocked. Again, thanks so much to everyone who offered suggestions!

If we end up loving it then I may plan a sightseeing trip there next year using all these suggestions too.

Following this as we are off to Denmark this summer as well.
Thanks for advice. We are planning 5 nights at lalandia and then 7 nights on the east side doing some exploring. Would welcome any tips.

Havanananana · 19/01/2023 09:35

@3isthemajicnumber

Are you going to the east side of Jutland (Aarhus, Vejle, Kolding, Randers) or the east side of Denmark (Sjaelland, Copenhagen area, Roskilde etc)?

3isthemajicnumber · 23/01/2023 23:51

Staying in Roskilde. Sorry to take aaaaages

Havanananana · 24/01/2023 07:53

On your way from Billund to Roskilde you can look at some interesting places in Jutland:

Jelling - Viking runes and an interesting exhibition (you'll also presumably be going to see the Viking boats in Roskilde);
Vejle - Økolariet science centre, which is an interesting 1-2 hours for kids and adults (see my post above);
Kolding - Koldinghus castle in the centre of the town is worth a 2-hour visit.

You could also do these as a day trip from Billund.

So helpful

I think one day at lalandia and one day in legoland would be enough, unless you are real enthusiasts. There is also WOW park in billund which is more nature based and very chill if you want a down day. AQUA dyrepark in Skanderborg is a favourite of mine but may be too far to drive.

Rollingdownland · 24/01/2023 11:50

You must spend a day at the Lego House. It's amazing.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/01/2023 11:52

I wouldn't bother with a hotel at Billund airport, it's about a mile or so away from Legoland etc. I went to the pool complex when I had half a day in the area to kill and I walked from there to airport afterwards, but of course you can get a bus or taxi instead.

If the flight times don't suit, the plan to fly to somewhere else and spend a few days in Billund and more time elsewhere in Denmark is a good one.

Havanananana · 24/01/2023 12:56

AQUA dyrepark is in Silkeborg, not Skanderborg. It is less than an hour from Billund by car. visitaqua.dk/

Silkeborg also has lakes, a paddle steamer and a museum with a world-famous bog body, Tollund Man.

newstart1234 · 24/01/2023 13:11

Oh yes it's silkeborg oops, always get those two mixed up. The place itself is one of the 'naice' places in Denmark. (Most is more sterile)

RandomPerson42 · 26/01/2023 13:51

Make sure you go to Lego House !

When we went we enjoyed it so much we spent 2 days there and 2 days in Legoland = great water fights with the germans lol.

We spent the other days going on buses and trains to places like Aarhus (great art musem), and to viking things like Jelling.

We didn’t really rate Lalandia itself except the waterpark - especially the river rapids and the water slides. The ice skating rink was dangerous with no staff about and a child cracked his head on the ice - blood everywhere.

We flew from Stansted which was dirt cheap. Stayed in PremierInn night before and flew early morning so got into Legoland at 9am having dumped the suitcases before hand. We stayed at the Legoland Park a couple of nights too as that meant cheaper flights so in effect an extra couple of days holiday in a cool Lego cabin for no extra cost (cheaper flights paid for the Lego cabins).

Kualma · 26/01/2023 14:16

Have nothing to add but you can actually walk from Billund airport to Legoland. It’s all pedestrianized and takes about 30-35 minutes.
