how dangerous is it in Brazil outside of the big cities. I realize that there is also a lot of poverty in big cities and that you can be mugged if you're not careful. But how is it in smaller places? Is it dangerous there too? So on land? While hiking? Thanks in advance for the experiences!

it is very dangerous especially if you don’t have a native with you and don’t speak the language

if could be a victm of assault, robbery, murder, rape or in the best case scenario get scammed

Brazil is going through a lot of turmoil because of the elections just to make everything worse

Brazil is MASSIVE.

Where are you thinking of going?

It really really depends where.

Off hiking in non touristy places without a clue what you are doing - very dangerous.

Hanging out in the beach in a tourist resort - not dangerous at all.

Other things somewhere in between.

I have family in Rio, but can’t speak for the rest of Brazil.

you have to have your wits about you, but so long as you don’t stray too far off the tourist trail, and you don’t go for any outward displays of wealth then it’s not too bad. My family member has been mugged (but so was my neighbour in London) and there’s regular shootings around where they work, but you just have to be careful and stick to tourist areas. I’m planning to go soon.

Brazil is 35 times larger than the UK so you'd need to be a bit more specific. Here's a link to the government travel advice:

At least one of the main beaches has armed guards. Fights regularly breakout near football matches. A lot of people are poor, thefts are common and tourists are targets. www.countryreports.org/country/Brazil/crimes.htm

You really want a guide/ guard.

Be really careful there. I know Sao Paulo and Rio with work.
Strictly no Jewellery, no watches (they will cut your finger off to get your ring) and keep everything locked in a good Hotel safe.
Make sure all Taxi's and Police are the real thing (from experience) and if you want to do the tourist trail hire a guide with a good reputation.
The people are lovely however. It's a real shame.
