York for 24 hours - what to do?

Dh and I are going to York this weekend - first break away in God knows how long. Driving up on Sunday - will probably get there about 4ish - staying in Hotel Du Vin and then leaving about 3 on Monday. So not long! Any ideas about things to do? (Apart from the obvious I mean .)

York eye.
Minster-but you have to pay-compulsary, rather than a donation-so spend as much time as poss to get your monies worth!

Have a look at www.visityork.org/

HTH.

The Minster. You can do a ghost walk in the evening. Sit by the river with a nice big glass of something.

SpiritualKnot · 07/02/2008 20:28

Hi sphil

Castle museum and Jorvik (pay and then you get in free with the same tickets for one year)
Railway museum (free), York theatre. The dungeons..expensive if you haven't got special offer tickets.

Went last year with my daughter and am going again ths weekend to use the same tickets before they run out in May!

Have heard great things about the rooms, but the food was nothing to write home about.

York is fantastic, loads of things to do and see.

Minster, Evening Ghost walk, Railway museaum adn Yorkshire wheel (£6 per person, although you can hire the pod and have champers), Castle museum, walk the city walls, museum gardens to walk and see.

TBH it is one of mine and DH's fav places and only an hour from us and we regularly visit with the children as there is always things to do and see.

TREBUCHET · 07/02/2008 20:36

Go to the new Hotel du Vin there and drink beeootiful wine and get free olives. If you are feeling flush, eat there too. I am jealous.

3Ddonut · 07/02/2008 20:37

Just soak up the amazing atmosphere, and eat at Rish, the best restaurant in the world!!!

3Ddonut · 07/02/2008 20:39

Where do you live Madhouse? We live about and hour away too and go as often as we can, in fact, we hope to move there one day look]]

Hang on, you're in the Boro too aren't you, you said how bad South Bank and Grangetown are in another thread recently (have to agree)

tribpot · 07/02/2008 20:39

I was going to say Railway museum and the Yorkshire wheel too, but if you're going sans enfants I would definitely skip child-enforced fun! (I have to go on that wheel all the bleeding time - I like it but really).

Minster, Betty's, boats on the river?

3Ddonut · 07/02/2008 20:40

sorry, that isn't a link just odd typing???

StressTeddy · 07/02/2008 20:41

Oh lucky you - I would recommend a stroll through the museum gardens (v close to the shops)
If you want good restaurants there are many - "Ask" is in the old assembly rooms and worth a quick look in even if you don't eat there. It's an amazing building. I would recommend here for lunch (on the mon?)
There are so many lovely places to eat in the evening
To be honest with so little time I would walk around (the lovely) shops, drink wine in lovely bars and enjoy each other's comapny

have a great time

Blandmum · 07/02/2008 20:44

I didn't think much of Jorvic tbh, V expensive.

Betty's Tea shop for tea?

TheMadHouse · 07/02/2008 20:45

3D live just outside Boro, grew up in Redcar. Lived dawnn Sawth for the last 12 years and came back when DS1 was 1 to be closer to family

southeastastra · 07/02/2008 20:46

railway museum

SallyInYorkshire · 07/02/2008 20:48

York is so great! I put in another vote for the railway museum! Also the Yorkshire Museum sounds q boring but is actually really interesting. So is Barley Hall. But DONT try to do more than one museum in 1 day!!

And definitely go to Bettys - its expensive but its got to be done!!!

I loved gpoing to Little Betty's with dh. So quaint, so delicious, so cosy.

pointydog · 07/02/2008 20:55

we enjoyed an evening ghost tour. There are also evening boat ghost tours.

3Ddonut · 07/02/2008 21:47

themadhouse, I grew up in Redcar too, how old are you? v. nosey, I know...!

If I had just 24 hours in York, I'd skip all the touristy stuff and just enjoy walking around the city, it's good enough on it's own!!!!

TheMadHouse · 07/02/2008 22:18

I am 34

3Ddonut · 07/02/2008 22:48

I'm 31 soon, so maybe I would know you (or of you) which school did you go to?

how nosey am I?!

TheMadHouse · 08/02/2008 08:27

I went to Saltscar then west redcar. My bro will be 31 in June

3Ddonut · 08/02/2008 20:41

Ah, I went to Rye Hills, so unlikely to know you then, we've hijacked this thread a little haven't we?
