Has anyone travelled abroad whilst pregnant? I will be 30'weeks when we go to Rome and not sure if I will be making a mistake going or not!! Any advice would be great .

I went to Turkey at 32 weeks.

Didn't do much walking, it was mostly a relaxing holiday.

Just make sure you take stockings for the flight and walk up and down the aisle every now and then.

Make sure your health insurance will cover you.

Are you insured at 30 weeks?

Are you insured at 30 weeks?

Can't remember who it was with, but my insurance covered pregnant women until 35 weeks.

Yes, I went to Bruges by train when about 6 months pregnant. If there were any issues then you would find a doctor in the normal way. Go and enjoy it. The only difference for me was that I was craving heavy, meaty stodge and I’m normally a vegetarian!

It's a really personal choice and depends on how well your pregnancy has been so far. I'd take out the best possible travel insurance that covers every possibility though just in case.

We went to Portugal when I was around 16 weeks pregnant with my last baby and the swelling in my feet was horrendous... it made walking around very difficult until it went down again, and it was even worse coming back. I hadn't suffered from swollen feet ever before in pregnancy.

Drive from Cheshire to Bandol in Provence at about 28 weeks. On the way back, drove from Bandol to Reims in 1 day.

I would travel in the UK up to that point but wouldn’t have gone abroad but many do. In the admittedly very low chance of premature labour I would prefer to be in the UK with access to healthcare from around the time of the viability limit (24 weeks). You could be stuck abroad for months if you did have a premature birth until the baby was able to travel home. Other complications like leaking waters and pre-eclampsia can also develop in the 3rd trimester. Even reduced movements (which usually amounts to nothing but needs monitoring) is much easier to deal with in the UK as insurance wouldn’t cover a checkup abroad. I was also starting to feel uncomfortable and found it hard to sleep without my huge pregnancy pillow (which could be lugged around if travelling by car in the UK).

  • Triple check your travel insurance will cover you through date of return. It’s no good it saying covered until 35 weeks and you’re flying back at 36 weeks.
  • Triple check your travel insurance includes coverage and medical repatriation for you and the baby if born preterm.

Should be fine - worth getting your doctor or midwife to write you a "fit to fly" certificate even if you're well under the airline's max number of weeks. All they can go on is how big your bump is and your word as to how many weeks you are. I flew at 29 weeks and they asked me quite a lot of questions!

I travelled a lot for work and pleasure while at pregnant - France, Maldives, Israel, USA. All fine. But a scan at 28 weeks made me high risk and in need of early delivery so I was grounded from that point. Many airlines want a fit to fly letter from 28 weeks and have a total ban from 30-something weeks.
