Egypt with 18 week old

Margot1029 · 11/01/2023 11:39

Anxiety ridden mum here 😂
Going to Egypt in March when my son is 18weeks old.
I am wondering / panicking about how I wash, sterilise bottles over there. Can I use their tap water to wash the bottles? Can I use their tap water to boil and use to
mix with formula? Been told not to use bottled water?
I’m at a point where I either want to cancel or actually considering buying single use sterile bottles and litre cartons of formula, as just seems easier?
please help!

Who have you booked with op, have you contacted them and asked if you can swap to a different destination?

GreenSweater · 11/01/2023 22:35

This thread is so icky and racist. It's fine to be factual about issues with tap water and health conditions, but repeatedly calling the place a 'shithole' and decrying the 'ignorance' of the population is disgusting. Egypt is not a wealthy country. People there aren't inherently dirty or unhygienic, they simply lack a lot of the infrastructure, education and governance that more affluent countries have in spades.

People are able to go on these lavish resort holidays precisely for this reason - because of the far superior wealth of the UK. To then shit all over the country for not having the same level of development is frankly appalling.

CherryRipe1 · 11/01/2023 22:50

It's a toilet. Stayed at the Hilton with freinds and family, we all got the screaming squitters/vomiting and it was grimy. The bug lasted for months once back home & I lost 1.5 stone. It went eventually just as I was about to have a stool test. I'd advise cancel/go elsewhere. These are the facts, you might get lucky & avoid being ill but probably not.

jackstini · 12/01/2023 07:52

I would try and move it to somewhere else if possible

We went in October along with friends and all 12 of us were ill at some point
They do have great meds which stop it within 24 hours for most, but some were ill for 3-5 days & it wipes you out

Not such an issue if you are there to just lie on a beach but trying to look after a baby when you have explosive diarrhea would be horrible

Sorry about the nastiness you are getting - (would have been wise to put in your OP that you booked it before you were pregnant though!)

WilsonMilson · 12/01/2023 08:00

What possessed you to book a holiday to Egypt with such a small baby?

Every single person I know who has been there got the shits. Even a friend who was extremely careful with food and only drank bottled water.

There’s not a chance I would go there with a little one.

Regularsizedrudy · 12/01/2023 08:31

Oh gosh forget the holiday I just read your other read and you shouldn’t go anywhere with this man! I hope you are okay and have someone in real life you can stay with?

MistyRock · 12/01/2023 08:36

@Margot1029 I didn't realise that was you (the other post) definitely do NOT go to Egypt, its really not the place to be if there's a chance of abuse from your partner. Its expected there, no one really cares about women and if you get into any kind of trouble you'll be stuck. Women are 2nd class citizens. I know, I've lived there. Husbands rule the roost. End of.

fairgame84 · 12/01/2023 08:53

@MistyRock is spot on.
Don't go anywhere with him, especially not north Africa.
When I was in Tunisia I women was getting slapped and punched by her husband and nobody helped her. DH is Tunisian and said it's normal and nobody will get involved. Egypt is worse than Tunisia.

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/01/2023 08:55

I wouldn’t risk Egypt with such a young child.

No one said anything about ignorance

Roselilly36 · 12/01/2023 09:09

Speak to the travel agent/tour operator asap and ask to change destination, explain circumstances have changed since you booked etc, if you are wanting winter sun, Canaries would be more suitable for a young baby. Even if you have to pay an admin fee to make the change it’s worth it. After all the comments on the thread re D&V you won’t be able to relax and enjoy the holiday. Good luck OP, I hope you can change the holiday & have a lovely time.

Errrrr, it was literally mentioned on the first page, the 'ignorance' of the population.

maddy68 · 12/01/2023 09:38

Bestcatmum · 11/01/2023 11:48

You must be joking, there is no way I'd take an 18 week old baby there.

Jesus hysterical much . Just use bottled water for bottles. It's fine.

I took mine at that age. Noone was ill. Just be careful as you obviously will be

"And routinely babies die in Egypt. 7 people a day are said to die on the corniche road in Alexandria. Nobody does anything about it because people literally don’t matter.
The level of ignorance in the population is staggering."

DuchessOfSausage · 12/01/2023 10:42

@georgiesmash , look at the last post on page 1. @GreenSweater is correct.

MistyRock · 12/01/2023 11:13

The problem with very religious countries is that they believe in gods will. So you die in a car crash (not wearing seat belts) it's gods will, die giving birth, gods will. They do not hold anyone accountable. If they spent as much time educating themselves as they do praying the country would be much better place.

FGS not everyone gets sick. Use bottled water for everything.

I drink a few mouthfuls of tap water in Hurghada and brush my teeth with it. I am used to chlorinated tap water as we have it abroad.

I’ve stayed all over Egypt. In resorts, luxury hotels and small Egyptian hotels (the highlight being the small one in Abu Simbel). I’ve never been ill. My husband who is coeliac and lactose intolerant has never been sick. This is for Cairo, Luxor, Qena, Minya, Aswan, Abu Simbel and Hurghada. I have loads of friends who go 5 or 6 times a year and no issues.

Where are you staying? What is their hygiene standard? Should be able to see it on their website. The hotel I’m off to tomorrow washes all fruit and veg in filtered water.

DazedandConcerned · 12/01/2023 18:07

At home. We have chlorinated tap water at home in Canada.

carrscrackers · 12/01/2023 18:10

I would not take an 18 week old baby regardless of formula fed or ebf. Obviously less risk for tbf but what if you get seriously sick? It's so easy to get sick in places where the water isn't clean. Even the simplest of things like eating a piece of cucumber washed with the wrong water can make you seriously ill.
I'd cancel. Not worth it. My dc been around the world as a baby but it's only they're 10 that I'm even considering taking them to places notorious for easily getting sick.

I grew up in Algeria and I totally agree. It was sexual harassment on a daily basis. Amongst many other examples of misogyny and violence against women, I remember our next door neighbour beat his wife when she came back from hospital, because she had given birth to ……a girl.

Irrelevant. You and your husband (what’s coeliac got to do with it, he knows what not to eat?) are 18 weeks old.

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/01/2023 22:43

Are not, obvs 🤣
