Coastal town to explore Andalucia?

Looking to go to Spain at Easter. Thinking a few days in Malaga itself then onto a base by the coast? Would like to visit the Alhambra Palace and maybe Ronda so wondering where would be a good location to base ourselves? Will be renting a car. Thanks

Nerja might be good if you want to visit Granada and Ronda. Casares?

Mumstheword2022 · 09/01/2023 20:33

We are regular visitors to Malaga and love it. Regular buses to Granada and Alhambra too. In fact, this is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.
nerja is just forty mins upthe coast on the bus and Frigliana is in land a few miles and worth a visit.
Trains are super but better down the coast

more to do in Malaga for a base IMO

have fun!

Estepona is really nice.

Hobbesmanc · 10/01/2023 17:53

Another vote for Nerja. We've recommended it to several friends and family and they've always loved it too.

Thanks all. Have decided to base ourselves in Malaga (found a lovely apartment with pool and separate bedrooms for teens 😂) and rent a car for the end of the week to venture further

Fab decision @MooMinCow !

You will have a great time.

Check out things like food and wine tours- did one second time we visited and we had a ball.

Eat in the market

also try the fashion and automobile museum! Yes! It exists! bit random but I woke oast an amazing fish tapas restaurant mostly used by locals

we love a restaurant called la Iguana -they have two restaurants and a little tapas bar and the service is fab

The city will keep you entertained but a bus will take you to the botanical gardens about thirty mins out - picture attached. Cafe is super

proper jealous 😊

Wow thanks for the recommendations! The food and wine tour sounds great as we are a bunch of foodies. DD is the artist in the family so excited about the Picasso museum (apparently it’s 50 years since his death so she’s hoping they’ll be some special exhibition on).

very excited 😊 that photo looks beautiful (will add to the list!)

Shamelessly piggybacking we ar off to Malaga in Feb - teenager and my parents (why oh why) so any cross generational ideas are most welcome
We have an air bnb by the Picasso museum so a little out of the old town bar / clubs area
Which food / wine tour would you recommend?
Daft question but is Uber available in Malaga?

Mumstheword2022 · 11/01/2023 21:21

We stayed in Frigliana and it was an easy day trip to Grenada. Nerja is lovely for coastal stuff, recommend visiting the Nerja caves too. We also visited somewhere nearby which had a great Gorge walk, but I can't recall the village name (there is also a Gorge walk in Nerja but it wasn't that one).

If you’re going to see the Alhambra pre book and get there early. The crowds and queue are huge.
Malaga is great, loads to do. Some of the restaurants around the Bullring are less touristy and frequented by locals. It’s an easy walk back to the old town.

We stayed about 30k from Rhonda in October and it was fantastic- really cheap to eat out - we had a day out in Estapona was really nice.

For the energetic amongst you, there is the option of flying into Sevilla and back from Malaga. Doing it that way means you can get to Cordoba, Antequera, and Granada by train then down to Malaga for a bit of beach time and shopping. Reverse the trip if flying home from Sevilla.

You'd need a few days to do it, but it is magic and very easy to do train wise. There is also the option of flying into Madrid and doing Granada, Cordoba and back to Malaga or on to Sevilla.

As others have said Estepona is a delightful spot, but my favourite place along the coast is San Pedro de Alcantara. A real working Spanish town, lovely buzzy atmosphere, and there is a promenade from there to Marbella via Puerto Banus with cafes and restaurants on the beach. Great for day time and it is beautifully maintained.

Can you tell that I love Andalucia?

Mrsherdwick · 14/01/2023 20:27

Also Gaucin is lovely. Walk up to the castle and the views are magnificent.
