Thinking about either a guided tour or self drive with some guiding thrown in. Has anyone been?

Yes. Hired a car with three other women. Felt very safe and the people are very friendly. The desert was fabulous. Amman felt a bit challenging in the way that chaotic cities can be - enjoyed the museums but otherwise preferred to be out in the desert. Highlights included using my very rudimentary Arabic on a group of schoolgirls at one of the sites - Hello, how are you? I'm very well, thank you, I'm very pleased to meet you, kind of thing. They were thrilled to meet us and loved the formal greetings. It's definitely worth learning a few phrases. Also tried on the mule driver at Petra and he was staggered when I asked the mule's name. Petra was incredible. Spend some time exploring there on your own if you can. If I went back I'd go to Wadi Rum.
One other thing that stood out to me was in one restaurant, a group of children were put on a table separate from their parents (three couples). The waiters waited on them and there was no fuss and they were very well behaved! It's a wonderful country.

Hi, did you hire the car from Amman downtown area or did you get it from the airport? I’m reading that driving in Amman isn’t recommended as it can get crazy, so was thinking whether we should Uber it to the airport and rent the car from there? Read somewhere that petrol prices might be expensive though driving from Amman to Petra?

Also, for the Wadi Rum dessert, we’re planning a full 3 days (4nights) but was wondering whether that might become boring? However, we really want to just enjoy some relaxing time with the kids (2yr and 9 month).

I think the car was delivered to our hotel.
I didn't get to Wadi Rum but I imagine it would be quite hard going for children.

One thing I remember was struggling to translate their numbers on a pump at a petrol station (using my guide book) and the attendant laughing, then finding that they had numbers on the other side of the pump! I'm very envious - I'd love to go back. I hope you have an amazing time. I loved Jerash and the desert fortresses, and the roads were very good.

I went solo some years ago, loved it, spent a week in Amman, travelled about using shared cabs...hooked up with some guys from NZ and an American girl, we drove to Syria and Iraq also.....5 of us in a cab slugging jack daniels from pepsi bottles listening to madonna casettes in the cab.....finally ended up in Petra and stayed there a month working in a small hotel !! one of my best trips ever. Also met up with people in our VW beetle group and they took us places and were so lovely. only once got over charged in a cab by a few quid, felt safe the whole trip.

Yeah we’re going alone as well and thinking of renting a car so we have more flexibility with the kids.

I was looking at those too but they seem so bulky! Might consider them anyway as I’m reading it’s quite some hiking in Petra. Did you to the main trial? How difficult of a hike was it would you say with the kids?

Did you bring your own car seat or did you rent from there? Another thing I’ve been trying to research. Sooo much to think of when taking children 😅!! But I’m very existed for them to enjoy some culture.

We brought the kids carseats with us which I'm glad we did as they were in the car a lot!

@doistayordoigoCox and Kings use good hotels but you get the worst rooms. We won’t use them for that reason. Had the issue repeatedly in India.

We were hardly in the rooms to be honest as we were out and about so much, so wasn't really a problem for us, but might be for other people I guess.

I still don’t like being over the kitchen waste area, a room where everyone smokes under the window and a room with a tree in front of the window blocking the view.I like to wake up to something pleasant outside and go to sleep without smoke wafting in. Issues with rooms didn’t make us feel like valued clients.
