Hi, looking for recommendations for a hotel in Dublin for a special birthday weekend. Not too pricey but in a quiet location. Don't mind slightly outside the centre as long as there are good public transport options nearby.
Any suggestions?

We went too long ago to recommend where we stayed, but look at the DART route & check hotels near the stops. Quieter & cheaper than the city centre.

Dalkey.

Malahide or Portmarnock. Both on the dart line. Malahide is a lovely village, great restaurants and Malahide Castle is lovely to walk around, super playground, cafe etc.
What kind of hotel do you want / who is in your group and I could give you more specific suggestions.

@Ahnobother , just me and my husband. It'll be his 50th. His Dad was born in Dublin so he's been loads of times but not recently - my Mum was from Cork but I don't hold it against him. Wink. For complicated family reasons, I didn't have holidays in Ireland as a kid.
We're a museum visiting, cafe going, mooching in book shops, strolling around looking at the city kind of pair. We probably wouldn't want to be out late so nearer the city the better - it's only for 3 nights.

I also have some mobility issues (MS) so I can't really guarantee from one week to the next how much walking I can do. Sometimes it's loads, sometimes it's not. When planning ahead, I have to assume not.

Rathgar is close to the centre and has good connections.

Ranelagh
Dundrum

would you get an airb&b in Dalkey or malahide? Both lovely coastal towns on the dart. You could spend a day or two there and enjoy it or go into the city centre.

The Herbert Park Hotel is located in Dublin 4. I stayed there in 2014 and we walked in to the centre daily - 20 mins approx. It is set beside a beautiful park where my mum and dad met in the 1960s 😁

Forgot to come back
Loads of museums in Dublin. All accessible by dart or kilmainham gaol by Luas. It has some great stuff on now.
For cafes / bookshops, Dalkey / Blackrock / Malahide.
The Grand Hotel Malahide is nice as is the hotel in Portmarnock - Links I think.
If you've mobility issues I wouldn't go to Howth as it's very very hilly.
Herbert Park is lovely as PP said
Ranelagh good but busy, very handy on the luas in to the city centre

Places to eat - check out The Winding Stair in Temple Bar. Overlooks the Ha'Penny bridge so lovely people watching and lots of character.

Try Sandymount Hotel or Raddison St Helens.

I am from Dublin and stayed recently in the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire for a birthday treat for a UK friend. It’s outside Dublin but with a rail connection (DART) into the city.

We got a room with a sea view. Had lovely walks along the sea and into Dalkey (gorgeous village) for dinner.

bellinisurge · 13/01/2023 17:34

Thank you everyone

Sandymount Hotel perhaps worth a look? Nice hotel, handy to the dart and Sandymount is a nice village.

i was going to come on and recommend dun laoghaire. loved it. really easy to visit dublin and also lots of other lovely places along the coast. Plus people really friendly and decent bars/restaurants. Wasnt so impressed with dublin.

Brycare · 13/01/2023 20:45

Malahide and Dun Laoighaire as mentioned above are nice. You can get the DART train into the city centre in about 30 mins-ish. Malahide the smaller of the two buy less hotel options there.
Some nice restaurants in both.
Ranelagh is a smaller village but also very nice and much closer to the city centre.
I’m Irish (other side of the country though) and we go regularly for weekends. They’d be my choice anyway.
