Cruises safe?

Are cruises now safe from a COVID and bug point of view or are people still being stranded aboard?
What are MSC and RC like, worth money?

I've been on three MSC cruises and loved them, next cruise is with Princess - first time using Princess.

My parents went on a cruise in the autumn last year, just after restrictions relaxed. Both got covid and were confined to quarantine cabins for 80% if the holiday. They won't be going again.

My parents got covid last month on a cruise. Lots of ships are reporting covid cases.

They were supposed to cruise again in February but have cancelled.

Same situation as @eurochick for my aunt and uncle. I think they are safe but personally I wouldn’t want to pay thousands for a cruise to be trapped in my cabin when there’s a million other holidays out there.

I wouldn't risk it as you'd still have to isolate in a tiny cabin which would be awful

PinkPlantCase · 18/01/2023 07:33

I think they’re relatively safe, I know a few people who have been on them recently and enjoyed them.

I assume you have to be vaccinated, for most you have to show a negative LFT to board. I’d be more worried if I was still living quite an isolated life but we all go to work, school, use public transport, go to the shops etc. so have generally built our immune systems up post covid.

How does the cruise company know if someone catches covid when on board? Unless they require medical attention? I don’t know many people who still test.

MrsDrambuie · 18/01/2023 08:41

We cruised with Royal Caribbean last summer, from Barcelona. Proof of negative test the day before boarding and that was it, no further testing required. Check the rules for the country you would be departing from.

Cruises are not cheap holidays but IMO you get good value for money.

Cruises are safe but you do need to bear in mind the limitations if you get ill. I'm sure every resort has lots of covid positive people walking around, choosing not to test and carrying on as normal. If you test positive on a cruise you will be either isolated in your cabin or disembarked at the next port depending on the protocols of the country you're in.

I've been on three ships since covid (I work in the industry) and it was fine, I needed to show vaccinations etc in a way that I don't if I just board a flight. Covid is reported on many ships but it is a fraction of the amount of cruises out there reporting issues. Hotels / campsites / apartments / eurocamps have no such requirement to test and report so there is no way of knowing if cruises are more or less safe unfortunately.
