Is the Tutankhamun exibition still on at the O2? Is it any good or shall we just stick with the British museum?

British museum is free and stuffed full of Egypty stuff too. Dh says that's just as good.

Dd doing Ancient Eqyptians at school and we thought we'd do a visit somewhere. Dh says our budget doesn't stretch to a Nile cruise

Oh that's good to know . Your dd is about the same age as mine.

The cost is putting me off a bit though. We'll have to take the other two as well. Could be a pricey trip.

we were distinctly unimpressed - they'd left all the good stuff in egypt! we weren't expecting our 2 year old to get much out of it, but the 2 x 6 and 2 x almost 8 year olds didn't love it either. the gift shop was staggeringly expensive too. stick to the good old british museum. it'll be quieter too.

TsarChasm · 04/02/2008 17:40

Is it right that the big gold and blue mask isn't there?

I was reading that the gift shop was selling some unbelievable stuff. A sarcophogus tissue box that dispenses tissues through one of the nostrils Actually I might have to....

there have been a few threads on this (maybe in culture vultures?)... I thought dome thing very overpriced, plus there's ghastly olde-Egyptiany musak playing

TsarChasm · 05/02/2008 10:21

Lol at the musak

The British Museum is pretty good - dd did the children's trail there last year as she had a summer project on Eygpt.

I'm wondering whether to take her to see King Tut myself before it sells out (aka Terracotta Army )

Kbear · 19/02/2008 22:36

I think there are 2for1 tickets for the exhibition if you go by train too. Check out train websites (Southeastern).

Just don't do it! Nothing to make it interesting for kids - 90 second video at beginning where you have to sit on the floor - no big blue and gold mask, poor re-creations of how they found it etc. DD and DS (8 and nearly 6) couldn't see things properly and had lots of questions which weren't answered (eg how long did it take to get everything out of the tomb? It doesn't say). Staff desperate to sell you audio guide - not kid friendly - not even a proper paper guide to take you round. Avoid the gift shop unless you have millions to spare - buy a set of King Tut Top Trumps in any good toy shop and you'll find out much more about the whole thing. We are culture vultures but thought it could have been done so much better.

Best bit was going to the dome by boat - we all loved that!

Nymphadora · 10/04/2008 20:19

Not that much thereto interest kids thats not in British museum (not for the price diference!

we were at the tissue box in the shop though!

frecklyspeckly · 11/04/2008 22:09

We dont live in London but I was bought a trip for a birthday present . I thought it was a once in a lifetime experience but probably be more suitable to take a child to the British Museum if it is actual mummies and artefacts you want to show them.

The reason why it is a bit of a swizz imo is that the poster appears to feature the image of the blue and gold 'mask' when what it actually depicting is a canopic jar - a replica of the blue and gold casket which has a minature mask on the top. Still it did allegedly contain the kings entrails in the tomb- nice!! that is on show at the very end.

It was very hot and dark and crowded too - although I missed my kids very glad they were not there for that reason.

And that gift shop- blimey!! what a load of overpriced rubbish!! I bought my mum a guide book - fourteen quid for a paperback pamphlet!! AND they charge a quid for a carrier bag!! AND I had to ask for it!!

Heifer · 11/04/2008 22:48

I went with my DH last month and thought it was ok, but not very impressive really tbh.

(Agree that the river trip to the o2 was good though)

The next evening we went to the British Musuem to see 1st Emp exh (terracotta army) and I was blown away, the musuem was so much more impressive and professional allround.

No idea what the Egypty stuff is like there, but I would def save my money and go to the BM instead.

If you do decide to go, you can get a discount if you go on the London Eye.

Nymphadora · 12/04/2008 09:00

We went by boat too, jubilee line was shut, boat was much better though we got htere half an hour after our ticket
